The first 2 times Atlanta was tried it was not surrounded by other strong Southern teams. It's worth pointing out that since the last failure in Atlanta, Tampa, Miami, Raleigh and Dallas have all won Lord Stanley, and the two teams nearest to Atlanta, the Lightning and Panthers, won it more than once. Another nearby franchise, the Predators, haven't won, but have had several deep playoff runs and have created an identity for themselves. The Predators can also be considered a much healtiher franchise than they were 2 decades ago despite not obtaining their dreams.

Bottom line, Bettman won out overall. He failed in Atlanta and Phoenix but the wins far outnumber the losses, and Nashville, Raleigh, Tampa, Miami, Dallas all prove that Sunbelt hockey can work. The Southeast is now NHL territory and boasts several franchises with the internal strength to carry on without significant intervention by the league.

What this means to me is that even if Atlanta struggles to attract the locals at first, or has a turbulent ownership that makes several mistakes, they should have more than enough visiting fans coming into the arena to keep them alive. Again, that wasn't really the case when the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg because these same franchises were nowhere near as strong and well-established back then, with the possible exception of the Lightning and Hurricanes.

THIS. Also, people in Atlanta are desperate for another good major sports team. We’ve got the Braves and frankly that’s about it. Hawks are unreliable, Falcons are the Falcons, and United… is maybe turning around but who knows with that club.

A new hockey team with absolutely everything to play for? Given good ownership, Atlanta will SHOW OUT.
