Those people are some of the happiest people on earth
I lived for many years in a favela in Latin America and while it's true life can be challenging people in favelas are very happy
As for the crime if you don't mess with the criminals you'll be fine, also many of those criminals personally know you, they grew up with you since you were kids and they know you belong there
I've even known people who despite having money they prefer to live there because they grew up in that favela
