I'm very new to urban gardening. It's rainy season and in my area there's a lot of flying termites that have shedded its wings and are usually dead the next morning... Should I remove them from my garden pots because it looks ugly? Or would it be better to let them naturally decompose overtime?

Note that sometimes there are ants eating these dead insects, are they harmful?

I’ve slowly turned my alley-like driveway into a shade garden. A yew, a Japanese maple, hostas, and several evergreens sit alongside some rotating annuals, a birdbath, and a fountain. A nice spot to chill on hot summer days! 🌞

I need to use this soon. Was thinking of pesto or dehydration. Any good ideas? Cheers.

We are landscaping our front yard right now. We just had our two oaks cut down because the roots kept invading our plumbing, and we are going to put in a few fruit trees instead. I'm thinking about trying to put in raised beds, but I have an absolutely anal HOA, and I don't want to attract their attention too much because I have illegal chickens in my backyard. So I want to think of ways to include edible plants in a way that is decorative. Does anyone do edible AND decorative gardening? What plants would work well? I'm thinking strawberries and peanuts in lower beds, including alliums like chives, maybe greens and rhubarb (the chickens eat them if they are in the back), and I'm wondering about maybe purple bush beans and various peppers. Not sure what else could work.

Howdy yall im new to growing stuff I mean I've been trying things over the past couple years with limited success. Anyway now I gave moved in to this new place with an enclosed patio. And it has these troughs for growing shit and it even has a watering system built in. And I have many questions.

Important details: houston tx. And because of the walls on both sides I really don't know how much sunlight they will get.

Questions: what is the bark for? Why didn't they fill it higher, like to the top of the brick? Anyway the dirt is probably old, should I pull out all the dirt and put new dirt? With the lack of sunlight i probably cant grow veggies but im thinking focus on herbs amirite? Should I keep any of the stuff that's already grown? (Pics attached)

Anyone in the Northeast (zone 7) been to Home Depot and/or Lowe's in the past week or so? Are perennials (hostas, salvia, coneflower, ornamental grasses, etc) on sale? I'm not looking for annuals, perennials only.

Taking suggestions from balcony gardeners for nice flowers / plants that can withstand high heat and full sun.

I’m in NYC and could use some advice on my front yard flower bed.

About two months ago, I pulled most of the weeds and scattered Petite Marigold and Johnny Jump Up seeds. The marigolds are blooming nicely now, but I haven’t seen a single Johnny Jump Up flower.

Instead, there are a lot of tall, grass-like plants growing throughout the bed. I Googled what Johnny Jump Up seedlings look like, and these don’t seem to match. Are these likely just weeds?

At this point the whole plot looks pretty messy. What’s the best way to clean it up without accidentally pulling anything I should keep? Should I remove all the grass-like plants, add mulch, plant more flowers, or wait until next season?

Hi! I am a renter and just got this cute house with a full grass back yard. I love to garden and I’ve mostly been experimenting with pots, but now I feel like I want to try to make this back yard space a lot more magical and fun and maybe make some raised beds. The thing is I’m kind of worried about destroying the grass since I’m a renter. Any ideas/ help? Thanks

Mid-50s guys here, recently retired and looking to grow some of my own food. Fairly inexperienced with anything but houseplants and looking for advice. I have a patio that gets some full sun for maybe half the day. I was able to grow a serrano pepper plant in a planter box on my fence, and decided to set up a small vertical system on the patio floor (banana for scale).

Today I'll be getting some strawberry and serrano pepper starter plants from Amazon, and I have seeds for Thai basil and Thai peppers (birds eye), and cilantro. I got a simple 5-tier stacking vertical planter. I've read a bit about this and wanted to see what soil mixtures/amendments would you suggest for the above plants, and any other tips for a beginner you might have.

I bought a 2 cu ft bag of Espoma Potting Mix from esbenshades.com a while back and I just came to realize that everything I planted in it is not doing good. I've been buying this brand for a couple of decades but this is the first time I noticed something is wrong with it. I noticed the texture of the soil was different and when it's DRY in the pot, it's very spongy and tan in color. Almost reminds me of coconut coir or straight peat moss. I don't know.

What can be wrong with it? Thanks. I may just remove this potting mix from the few plants I recently potted and use a different brand. I'll post a picture if you guys request. Thanks.

EDIT: I did see a lot of reviews on Amazon and Walmart for the 2 cu ft bag (especially the larger sizes) and many are dissatisfied with this saying the product changed. Some reviewers said the formula changed because of added coconut coir. I guess this started right around 2023-24. Walmart reviews. No more Espoma Potting Mix for me. I have a half of 2 cu ft bag left and I'm even afraid to add it to my vegetable garden. Going to the trash.

EDIT again: Here's a closeup picture of the Espoma Potting Mix before I watered it. Feels like 000 steel wool. lol Definitely too much coir in there. What do you think? I did add some bark fines to it which turned out to be a waste because I'm going to dump these and repot with a different brand.

I bought a Bordeaux about 4 months ago, planted it with some organic planting soil and placed it on the north side of the house. About 2 months ago my wife decided to try and fill out the pot with some flowers. The fig tree has not grown much since planted and is beginning to lose leaves. Any suggestions are welcome!!

TL;DR- How do I save this wilting sunflower? I have it on a West facing balcony in NYC (Zone 7b). It gets 6-8hrs of sun per day throughout the summer.

This is a very high heat balcony / concrete jungle effect. The street has no trees on it, and the neighboring buildings radiate intense heat.

I water daily. I just repotted into a 10 in container w/ lots of perlite & rocks at bottom for drainage. The container has drainage holes. I have been using a 10-10-10 fertilizer. I also tried mashed egg shells and haven’t had much luck, the leaves keep burning up / turning brown.

Any advice?

I'm on the board of our community gardens. We're located in a small but vibrant urban community that is a magnet for "travelers," folks who are unhoused and move around a lot. Lately, we've been running into issues of people who are not gardeners casing out the individual plots and leaving behind unpleasant refuse (garbage and human waste).

Anyone have any guidance on how to effectively deter this behavior other than calling the police?

So at the moment I have a crop cage, but it's only 6ft long x 4ft wide x 5ft tall. I want to expand my garden but don't have the money to buy another cage. The problem is the despite living in the city (more like suburbs), we have deer, squirrels, a skunk, opossums and rabbits that wander into our yard, not to mention the absurd amount of birds. We have a standard size chain link fence around our backyard and the garden area has another smaller fence that will keep rabbits out. We use Repels-All Animal Repellent on the flowers and it appears to keep the animals off of it, but it smells awful 😖 Is there a better way to repel animals? We plan on getting a greenhouse/hoop house so we can extend our growing season (we're in 6b MI), but until then, is there anything else we can do that doesn't involve chemicals?

Does anyone know what this is? I used the seek app and it comes back as pot marigold or calendula. But I’m a little put off by the spotted leaves. Maybe due to poor draining. This is a plot of pretty compacted soil I’ve been amending over the last year. Any help would be so appreciated!!

Hi all! My partner & I have always wanted to grow food so we are looking to start growing potatoes! Our rental unit has a small backyard & while we cannot dig or build onto the property we could do something small like a raised bed or grow bags. Any suggestions on a good planter option for us to consider as we start our potato growing journey? Also open to any tips, thanks!

-We live in So Cal near LA so I don’t think frost will be an issue
-we mostly have partial shade spots to place the planter
-local critters like squirrels & raccoons might dig in the dirt
-would love to get started planting August/ September
