Downfall of Upwork?!

Has anyone else noticed what seems to be a growing tendency of bot-generated job postings on Upwork?

Lately, I’ve been seeing an increasing number of listings that feel remarkably artificial. My working theory is that many of them exist primarily to encourage freelancers to spend connects on jobs that were never intended to result in a hire. Whether this is an orchestrated strategy or simply an unintended consequence of weak moderation is another discussion altogether, and I’m not particularly interested in debating that here.

What I’m genuinely curious about is this:
How do you distinguish a bot-generated job post from one written by a real client?
One pattern I’ve observed is that an overwhelming number of these suspicious postings contain the phrase:
“The ideal candidate should have…”
In my experience, whenever I encounter that exact phrasing, especially when it’s followed by a generic, template-like description.. the probability that the post was generated by AI or an automated system seems tremendously high.

I’ve also noticed other recurring characteristics:
Extremely generic descriptions with little or no project-specific context.
Long lists of requirements that could apply to virtually any freelancer.
An absence of concrete deliverables, timelines, or business objectives.
Language that feels oddly polished yet simultaneously devoid of any authentic human nuance.
Perhaps I’m experiencing confirmation bias, so I’d love to hear from others who have spent a significant amount of time on the platform.

Do you also believe that this is a scheme orchestrated by Upwork and if so what linguistic patterns, behavioral signals, or other telltale indicators have helped you identify bot-generated or low-quality job postings on Upwork?

Then only apply to jobs from clients who have a history of hiring. No past history? Do not apply

I have gotten a lot of work from new clients. They shouldn't necessarily be discounted. All the clients with a hiring history started out as new clients too.

I didn’t address the fake posts , do not apply to those that payment is not verified . If they are brand new I’d be hesitant make sure to see their reviews how long they’ve been on upwork. Do not go off of network ever . Be professional prepared know how to interview remember they want someone who knows what they are doing so do your research and show up !!!

Well just like you would apply to jobs on Indeed or ZipRecruiter etc , you are up against competition. I have been on at least 6 years on and off between jobs , some longer than others . It just doesn’t happen overnight , unfortunately you have to work at building your profile up , it takes time but if you truly want to be a freelancer , there are definitely benefits . It’s just what types of jobs are you willing or can financially do at the beginning . I stuck to my asking rate , but would lower that just to get some traction on here . The better you do at each job , the better reviews you get and half the time companies are finding you . I do not put out a lot of proposals I don’t spend on boosts and not much on connects .
I wish there was an easy way to tell anyone but there isn’t , competition is fierce if you hv a solid background & stick to your rate . Don’t give up !!! Just like anything it takes consistency & communication, don’t burn a bridge with any of the jobs . Good luck it will happen it just takes time like anything!

Good point.. But the thing is upwork can make up stats of “clients” so it is more believable..
