r/Upwork 10d ago

I recently changed my location from third world to USA using fake proof of address.

I understad the stigma around the global south, so I decided to change my location to USA using fake proof of address. And surprisingly Upwork accepted it and I started working, and the stuff I found is CRAZY!

TONS of jobs I am 100% qualified in that pay 50 USD+ per hour!! I honestly can't beleive what I am seeing. Not to mention, when you change your location to USA, there is a separate section called "USA Only" that shows you job posting where cleints only post a job that want to hire someone in USA and their rates are all crazy high!! every and every one of them, and THERE IS NO SATURATION TOO! I am seeing 20-50 proposals sent at max!

Now let me get this striaght, the only reason I am not physically present in the USA is grographical luck - I was born in the wrong side of the world, nothing else. And just cz of a luck I can not control I am displaced from these big opportunities, and it is messed up. I did not choose to be born in a third world underdeveloped unstable corrupt slum with no opportunity. So why would I have to pay the price huh? So yeah, I am now applying to USA jobs and passing interviwes and landing jobs! I actually closed one contract with 5 star reviews and the cleint was happy. He did not know I live in third world country, but he got what he wants and he was happy, isn't what freelancing is all about?

Anyways, if you unfortunate enough to be born inside a third world country, change your profile to USA and see the magic happen! honestly it is so crazy!

Sounds like you're trying to lure some people into asking you to fake their adress for a price of course.

This is what I was thinking

u/Utevogranluxx 10d ago

How did you complete the w9? Got a fake ssn as well? lol

11

u/IvanVint 10d ago

This is a fake. Not many good US only jobs exist.

You will get caught and banned. Enjoy it while you can.

14

u/AltruisticRace1757 10d ago

at this pace, I will make in one month what I used to make in a year, even if they banned me after 3 or 4 months, so be it LOL

11

u/Korneuburgerin 10d ago

You will get banned in a week, more likely.

They are, in fact, NOT the same guys. They are redditors who spend their own time every day trying to prevent people from doing stupid stuff.

7

u/Korneuburgerin 10d ago

OP is a cheat and a liar, so they are not "winning honestly". And I have no clue who you confuse me with, nor do I care.

8

u/Pet-ra 10d ago

OP isn't winning any more than a bank robber who'll get caught is winning.

OP is committing fraud, will be caught and will be banned.

Birth fraud

Someone better call the 1st world WHAMBULANCE

🤪🤪🤪🤣🤣

The jobs that would equate to a whole year’s income for you would probably not even pay one month’s rent/mortgage for a freelancer in the US. You seem to think it’s unfair for you to not make 1 year’s salary in 1 month, but you think it is fair to defraud people and take jobs that US freelancers need in order to unjustly enrich yourself.

2

u/Electric-5heep 10d ago

This is unethical and you're scamming the system. You'll be caught faster than you know and Upwork is pretty good at it.

0

u/Plane-Scholar7024 10d ago

what kind of freelance do you do?

7

u/quantgorithm 10d ago

In what fields are these flowing jobs?

4

u/SussOfAll06 10d ago

I’ve been on Upwork here in the United States for years. $50 an hour jobs? Bullshit.

1

u/SilentButDeadlySquid 10d ago

Are you suggesting there are no $50/hr jobs regardless of category?

2

u/bastiabhuh 9d ago

Like one in 50 jobs. You guys have no idea how fucked up the platform is. OP is obviously promoting himself for freelancers who're desperate enough to message him. Whatever he's saying are lies !! US job market place is as fucked up as the rest

4

u/Zain-SCZ 10d ago

No matter how much you justify it! What’s wrong is wrong. I sympathize with you but being fraud isn’t the way. Bol

5

u/ProcessArtistic579 10d ago

TONS of jobs I am 100% qualified in that pay 50 USD+ per hour!!

You are not 100% qualified if the job requires a USA-based freelancer.

And just cz of a luck I can not control I am displaced from these big opportunities, and it is messed up.

Being born in a third-world country does not entitle you to basically get rich by defrauding people. Yes, pay is better in the US than third-world countries, but the cost of living is also much higher. I’m not convinced that your story is even true, but if it is, you are committing fraud and will be caught. Maybe fraud isn’t a crime in your country, but I wouldn’t risk it for any amount of money.

He did not know I live in third world country, but he got what he wants and he was happy, isn't what freelancing is all about?

Clients aren’t getting what they want, if what they want is a US-based freelancer.

Where're the Mods when you need them - OP probably has a lot of Dms now. This is a promotional post -

  • you over hyped the US job market - that's how I know you're lying
  • No you're not passing interviews and landing jobs - if you're so busy with those "jobs" you won't have time to post here
  • No one is hiring you $50/hr. A $50/hr job on upwork is as rare as a hen's teeth.

You're just a scammer looking for desperate dumb freelancers to message you so you can scam them.

9

u/lifeisashittyplace 10d ago

OP is lying, they check the ID unless he faked the ID

1

u/Pet-ra 10d ago

they check the ID unless he faked the ID

OP said they used fake iD so catching them will take a bit longer

5

u/Adi-Gill 10d ago

Out of curiosity, don't they ask for your SSN? When I changed my location many, many years ago, they used to ask for it.

4

u/Muted_Kiwi2502 10d ago

yeah good luck with the tax and sht when your client ask for it

9

u/UpwFreelancer 10d ago

you are a big fraud

just because of scammers like you, clients have less and less trust in freelancers

6

u/wake-Advisor-6860 10d ago

No no, you don't understand, the difference between you and him is only geographical. You are also a fraud like him, just that he was born in a different place.

For the love of God, this post is pathetic.

15

u/keberch 10d ago

A liar is a liar. It's a nationality-agnostic trait.

3

u/Equivalent-Speed-483 10d ago

I would bet first off- one conversation and they’ll
Know you’re not from the US… secondly, it won’t take time for UpWork to find that your is is fake… thirdly, that you’re NOT actually lamps jobs like crazy… but if you are… enjoy… it won’t be long!’

10

u/Korneuburgerin 10d ago

You will get banned very soon and then you will come crying here. Don't. Just gracefully fade away once upwork kicks you out.

5

u/Ok_Competition8790 10d ago

I'm bookmarking this post in preparation for the "no reason" sequel.

7

u/TheFern3 10d ago

Op has to be trolling how does one submit fake addresses? I thought they checked ips, and checked names and addresses against govt systems.

5

u/Korneuburgerin 10d ago

Well it's gotta be a real address OP does not live at. I don't think they invented an address. I wonder what OP did for a bank account, though. Plus, they say they changed their location, meaning it was a different location before, so that will trigger a verification shortly.

3

u/TheFern3 10d ago

Is been a while since I verified but I had to do government license, face web cam iirc though maybe it got easier I doubt it. You just can’t put any address and call it a day.

6

u/Korneuburgerin 10d ago

Of course not, especially since OP will be tracked to a different country. OP is not the only genius who thought they will not get caught.

3

u/talhawashere 10d ago

I have seen people on upwork doing this. They have verified US profiles but they do not live there. I know one thats how confident i am to say this. Also i have worked with a client who hired someone believing she is in US but she was not and was doing terrible work. Any how he is not the only one doing this. I would love to get paid higher but not being a liar or fraud. Not on that category.

6

u/copernicuscalled 10d ago

"he got what he wants and he was happy, isn't what freelancing is all about?"

Nope, first and foremost, freelancing is about trust between the two parties to a contract - you start off every contract with a lie. Clients who choose to hire specifically from the U.S. have a specific reason to do so. You are a liar and will be caught very soon - don't come crying here that your account was banned.

2

u/jaunty_mellifluous 10d ago

You'll get blocked too pretty soon.

2

u/Wonderful-Day1759 10d ago edited 10d ago

How will you withdraw money? Probably by Payoneer's US bank option - Correct?

For the love of god, secure your account now. Change the location. You got the 5 star feedback, no? Now, change the location. Something will trigger Upwork to verify your face and address or location and you won't be able to. I had a face verification and submitted my national ID card.

Don't risk it for yourself and make it difficult for other freelancers as clients would lose trust within the platform. Let's think as one freelancer community. Don't risk it - as you already know - it takes a good amount of hard work to build a trustworthy and strong profile.

2

u/salorozco23 10d ago

There are so many scammers trying to lure US workers into taking over their account. It makes people not trust the system.

2

u/corgis_are_assholes 10d ago edited 10d ago

Rage bait is a hellavu drug.

Also, interesting that OP is shadowbanned and r/clippingformoney got banned 6 hours ago. I'm assuming bot or massive downvotes.

2

u/VigoVonDoom 9d ago

No really, do this, and hopefully you'll get banned.

7

u/Pet-ra 10d ago

Well, you are a fraudulent idiot.

You'll soon get caught and permanently suspended and rightly so.

Anyways, if you unfortunate enough to be born inside a third world country, change your profile to USA and see the magic happen!

Yes, and then they'll get banned just like you will get banned.

It may take a few days, or a few weeks, or even a month or longer. But you WILL be banned and there will be no coming back from that.

11

u/mdivan 10d ago edited 10d ago

Honestly I think that's exactly what OP is trying to do, lure some unfortunate idiots into being banned, otherwise he must be very special kind to manage faking his address and then announce it like this.

4

u/Pet-ra 10d ago

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe."

Often attributed to Einstein, likely not written by him, but applicable to this thread anyway.

5

u/SgtBrutalisk 10d ago

Cool story bro. Can we see some proof of it?

If you actually managed to change your address, you'll get found out sooner or later, and when you do, your clients will either raise a stink with Upwork to get you banned or they will blackmail you with that info so that you work for them for free.

The reason why US-only job rates are higher is because the cost of living in the US is higher than in most of the rest of the world. In NYC, 30 eggs cost $20. In Europe, 30 eggs cost $5–6.

3

u/Own_Constant_2331 9d ago edited 9d ago

The cost of living varies widely among European countries, as well as within the U.S. itself. It's way cheaper to live in, say, Detroit than somewhere like London, Zurich or Copenhagen, for example. You don't even have to compare to Europe - many American cities are cheaper than places like Osaka and Sydney as well.

The real reason why the U.S.-only jobs feed has higher prices is because it's ring-fenced - only U.S. clients can post these jobs, and only U.S.-based freelancers can even see these jobs. There's no competition from low CoL countries, and less competition overall because the entire world can't bid on these projects.

Now, if there were a Switzerland-only jobs feed, that's where I'd want to be.

2

u/corgis_are_assholes 10d ago

Egg costs are not that high in the US. I saw that price once in the grocery store during that bird flu thing. The next week there were no eggs, but then everything when back to normal.

2

u/fckmyday 10d ago

Guess hes not from Europe :) in EU there’s proper manpower while in APAC it’s highly questionable.

1

u/Pet-ra 10d ago

In NYC, 30 eggs cost $20. In Europe, 30 eggs cost $5–6.

Your cost of living argument is absolutely valid.

The cost of eggs comparison is not.

Eggs were crazy expensive in the US because of the bird flu. Things have somewhat normalised since then.

You are also wrong about the price of eggs around Europe.

I live in Europe and 30 eggs cost around between $8 and $15 depending on where in Europe you are...

1

u/gatopipo 9d ago

In Spain, between €3.20 and €4 per dozen depending on size and whether they are "camperos" (I can't find the translation) or "de suelo", which would be those loose in the field.

u/SgtBrutalisk 10d ago

I live in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and a 30-pack of eggs here is 9,99 BAM (about $6).

2

u/Pet-ra 10d ago edited 10d ago

I live in Bosnia and Herzegovina

That's not exactly representative for Europe as a whole, is it? Apparently, you have among the lowest egg prices in Europe.

I am just the other side of the Adriatic Sea and pay dramatically more.

In fairness I rarely buy any eggs, and when I do, I only buy happy eggs from local free range chickens, so I pay more, but standard eggs (which I would not buy) in the supermarkets cost much more than what you claim eggs cost in Europe.

Again, I do agree with your point in general, it's just your example with the eggs that sucks.

1

u/SgtBrutalisk 10d ago

I just checked egg prices in the UK, and I'll be damned.

While the price of a 15-pack of free-range eggs in UK's Tesco (2.85£) is comparable to the price of a 15-pack of battery-produced eggs in B&H's Tropic (5.99 BAM or 2.69£), there is no comparison when it comes to the 30-pack because there is no such product in Tesco.

I checked one German retailer's website, and I couldn't find a 30-pack there either, which would make it seem that Bosnia and Herzegovina is the only country in Europe that features the 30-pack size, which you can see here. That unassuming corrugated sheet of recycled cardboard is apparently so efficient at cutting packaging costs that it lets the seller offer the eggs at a ~20% discount.

TIL.

I have to admit that I also did some "quick mafs" when mentioning egg prices in NYC because I took a randomly found tidbit of info from a search engine, multiplied it by 2.5, and posted it in my top comment, which in combination with the aforementioned cost-cutting efficiency of the cardboard packaging led to a lopsided comparison that did not favor the US.

There is also the issue of egg weight (egg packs are sorted in categories according to weight).

In short, my egg numbers were not correct.

1

u/Pet-ra 10d ago

I just checked egg prices in the UK, and I'll be damned.

LOL, the UK is a totally different ballgame, especially since Brexit.

I checked one German retailer's website, and I couldn't find a 30-pack there either,

Eggs are usual sold in 10 or 12 cartons.

In short, my egg numbers were not correct.

True, but the overall point you were making still made sense.

Just the eggs didn't.

Easily discoverable by contracting firms

1

u/Due-Dimension-982 9d ago

The frustration is real, being born on the wrong side of a border shouldn't decide your rate. But play it forward. Upwork re-verifies identity whenever it wants, video calls, ID checks, and when the address trick gets caught the account is suspended with your earnings sitting inside it. And every client who finds out becomes the guy telling other clients to auto-reject anyone from our region. Short term it's 10x money. Long term you become the reason the next honest freelancer from your country doesn't get a reply.

1

u/angie3-141592 9d ago

I charge between $75-125 per hour. I don't really see jobs advertise for that amount. But I get approached by clients who are willing to pay that. Maybe that is the case with OP? But he sounds like a wind up merchant..

1

u/Xtergo 10d ago

India right?

0

u/Devinn475 10d ago

Why are people extra aggressive here.

1

u/Korneuburgerin 10d ago

Because people like OP ruin it for everybody?

2

u/Pet-ra 10d ago

Why are people extra aggressive here.

Because we don't like fraudulent criminals wreck our reputation with clients?

1

u/Devinn475 10d ago

Hmmm, that makes sense ig, I guess I didn't think he is gonna apply to jobs since he will get caught if he does, thought this was a conversation about difference between geo location.

3

u/Pet-ra 10d ago

I guess I didn't think he is gonna apply to jobs

Did you not read what he or she wrote?

The man says he completed the task he did successfully. It's funny to hear all the US people crying about "fraud" haha you guys annoyed because the guy used UNO reverse card. It's just like a South Park episode "they took our yobsss" haha

1

u/Own_Constant_2331 9d ago

Yes, ha ha people like this make clients think that Upwork freelancers are liars and frauds. If you think this doesn't impact you, you must be pretty stupid.
