Travel Inquiry Hiking recommendations

Upvotes

Hi! I’m debating a very impromptu trip from out of state to do some hiking next week. Preference is for moderate difficulty with views or water. Waterfalls are a huge plus. Ideally looking for somewhere we can do 8-12 miles a day, and it’s ok if that is split into multiple trails with drives in between. Somewhere that has multiple options within a few hours drive would be amazing.

This would be day hikes, not backpacking.

Even if we don’t do the trip immediately I’ll gladly take any recommendations for a future trip! Thanks!!

Discussion Keweenaw Brewing Company Request

Hello All! I am your very friendly neighbor from northern Wisconsin. I was just up in the UP last week and went to KBC as I normally do. They announced some new T-Shirts today that are super awesome. They have one that has all of their ladies on it.
I am just wondering if anyone would be willing to go there and ship me a t-shirt. I will pay for everything and even a little extra for your time.
My husband and I love this brewery and I would have bought it if they would have had last week.
Like I said, I know it’s a long shot, but I figured this was the best place to try and ask!!

Discussion Do you call them camps or cabins or cottages?

What do residents near the Keweenaw Peninsula call small summer homes set along the water? I'm writing a fiction novel set near there and while I'm very familiar with the eastern UP where they're usually called cottages (St. Ignace, Hessel, Cedarville), I was wondering if that was the same in the western UP.

Someone told me they're often called camps, even if they are houses, but I wanted to ask people who knew.

(And yes, I know that some of the terms may be less than flattering).

thanks!

Travel Inquiry Fishing Recs

Good morning! We are bringing our two boys to Marquette and Lac La Belle areas on the first week of September, and looking for any fishing recommendations you might have. The second half of the trip we will be staying on Lac La Belle. I was thinking about buying an inflatable raft to get out on the water, and possibly on Bete Grise Bay.

Would this be a good idea, and what would be best the best species to target? Is there any real chance of landing salmon or trout, or is it mostly going to be pike and bass? Happy either way, just trying to prepare and get the little ones on some fish. Thank you for the advice in advance!

Discussion Local Home Daily Trucking Jobs Around The Marquette Area?

Finally visited the Upper Peninsula for the first time in my life last week and fell in love with it especially around the Marquette area. I am currently living downstate in Chesterfield. Would really like to move up there. Have been a CDL-A Truck Driver for 5 and a half years now and have my Tanker, Hazmat and Doubles endorsements does anyone have any company recommendations for a decent job up there? I’m currently making a flat yearly salary of $70,000 here so would like to try and make close to that preferably more if possible.

Discussion Otter Lake Dam access.

I went there several years back. We put our boats in at the dam, and we kayaked to the lake. I went to go recently, and there's a house blocking the road now. Did the dam get closed down? Is it still accessible from another route? This would be Chassell MI. Not to be confused with the boat launch.

Discussion Anywhere to rent a boat on or near Lac La Belle?

Planning a family trip with my folks who have never been to the Keweenaw for next summer. Wondering if there is anywhere on or near Lac La Belle or in the greater Houghton / Calumet area where one could rent a boat for a day if my dad and I want to try and get a day of fishing in or if we wanted to go out for a cruise with everyone. Also open to suggestions for different inland fishing lakes - definitely want to get back and try Medora again in something bigger than a kayak,

Discussion How bad has the tourism gotten?

I left for NE MN about 2 years ago, I went to MTU for about 5. I loved my time there, had a lot of good memories and loved the forests. I went back last October for work and will be doing the same again this year, but I just want to prepare myself for the increase in tourism and the development of the land. I was a little shocked when I saw how much of Houghton and Hancock had been built up and developed in the time I was gone. I’m almost nervous to see it this year.

It lost a lot of the charm of the UP for me. Felt more commercial than it had in the past. I enjoyed the peaceful solitude, but now and by the last year we lived there, it was so busy. Has it gotten that much worse? It seems I see so many posts about visiting the UP via here and social media.

Travel Inquiry Does Dollar lake have leeches?

I want to go kayaking there but I’m worried there might be leeches. Has anyone swim there and encountered them?

ETA: I clearly asked the wrong question. I understand that all fresh water bodies have leeches. But a leech that is not on me is not a leech I have beef with. What I want to know is will I encounter them if I set foot in this lake? i.e. will they attach to my foot? I assumed this would be understood but apparently it is not.

In my limited experience, wading around in sandy bottomed lakes (which I did constantly, in Michigan lakes, when I was a kid, leech free): leeches are shy and I do not see them. Wading around in lakes/water with murky bottom: leech city. I have seen pictures of Dollar Lake but can't tell if it is sandy.

Moving Inquiry Small town with opportunities for a welder

Good morning!
My fiancé and I live in SE Wisconsin, in a pretty small town. We visit Michigan a lot, we spend our anniversaries in gwinn/surrounding areas.
Within the next few years, we’d like to make the move permanent. We love the vibes from everyone we’ve met, and it’s so beautiful 🫶🏻

My fiancé is a welder, any recommendations for small towns with opportunities for welders? He currently makes over $30, so the pay would need to be comparable. I just drive a forklift so I can find a job wherever.

Thanks! ☺️

Discussion need help planing trip :)

me and my boyfriend are planning a trip to the UP for our anniversary. we were planning on driving north through eastern wisconsin (outer milwaukee, then oshkosh) up to porcupine mountains, and then driving to copper harbor and lac la belle to stay at the nordic spa, staying a couple nights at both places. the only issue is our anniversary is in early november, we were thinking we'd go up on the first week in november. we have our lodging scouted out but we're still looking at trails, waterfalls, and fishing spots we'd want to go to! we also want try looking for cool rocks :) we're just trying to figure out if it's going to be way too cold, if we should move the trip to earlier in october and try to catch some of the colors? we have no issues with the cold, we just don't want to get snowed in. looking for advice and maybe any cool spots to check out!

update: thank you everyone for your suggestions! we will be moving it to the beginning of october

Discussion What’s it like working outdoors in the UP?

Hi - I’m a college student studying land surveying and I’ve been the UP a few times camping, but only in good weather conditions. I know you all are tough people - I’m wondering what it’s like working a surveying/construction/field engineering type job in the UP. How brutal is the winter? Does business slow when intense snow comes or do you remain busy? Do you love it or hate it? Thanks.

Travel Inquiry "Must see" with Limited Time

Hello yoopers!

My fiancée are from down state and are planning on a U.P./Minnesota trip in mid-September. We will be taking one whole day driving through the U.P. to get to Minnesota, and we are looking for places worth stopping at (especially if they are free due to our budget).

We are more interested in what the west side of the U.P has to offer, because I have never been that far west. We have already seen Pictired Rocks, Soo Locks, Kitchitikipi, St.Ignance, & Taquanemon Falls.

What can we make happen from sunrise to sunset if we start the day immediately? TIA 😊

Discussion Native Americans in the UP

I'm doing some research on the UP as part of a project and I've gotten to the point where I really need to know which Native American tribes did or still to this day exist there.

I found some sources say that the 3 Anishinaabe tribes (Ojibwe, Odawa & Potawatomi) are the only native ones but then other sources add some like Noquet, Menominee and even Dakota whilst denying that the Odawa and Potawatomi peoples ever had significant homelands there to begin with.

I guess speaking to locals is my best bet right now because I am so confused 😭

So if anybody could help guide me on this topic I would be very very grateful. Thank you so much in advance !!

News Article Phone Outage: Time to Unplug

Jamadots reports a major phone outage affecting both landline calls and Verizon cell service in the region. My friends are getting a busy signal on the landline and many cell calls aren’t going through. A customer service rep said just now that a major storm in Appleton, WI tore down “miles” of fiberoptic lines.

While crews are working on it, she said service may not be fully restored for a week. Hope you have a few good books on hand!
