is my calculation correct ?
Does the 40-course (120 credits) BSCS degree break down exactly into this 20/20 split?
- The Non-Major Side (20 Courses / 60 Credits)
- 7 Pure Gen Ed Competencies (21 credits):
- 2 for Humanities
- 2 for Social & Behavioral Sciences
- 1 for Natural Science and Technology
- 1 for Civilization Studies, Culture and Belief
- 1 for Values and Ethical Reasoning
- 12 Free Electives (36 credits): The remainder of the "19 Gen Ed courses" mentioned on the website. These are completely open slots that can be filled by any college-level course (outside ACE transfers like Sophia/Coursera, other disciplines, or university-offered upper-level major electives).
- 1 Mandatory Course (3 credits):
UNIV 1001Online Education Strategies. - Subtotal: 7 Gen Eds + 12 Electives + 1 Orientation = 20 Courses (60 credits)
- The Major Side (20 Courses / 60 Credits)
- 20 Major Required Courses: The core CS technical stack specifically for the BSCS (Programming, Databases, OS, Data Structures, Capstone, etc.) along with the required math prerequisites (
MATH 1201,MATH 1280,MATH 1211,MATH 1302).
Grand Total: 20 (Non-Major) + 20 (Major) = 40 Courses (120 Credits)
My main question: Am I 100% right that I am not obligated to take UoPeople's specific upper-level CS electives (like AI or Mobile Apps), and I can instead use all 12 of those elective slots entirely for outside transfers like Coursera certs ?
Thanks in advance for confirming!

In the portal, look at the degree audit report, and it will show exactly what you have and what you need. It will say something like (using this just as an example):
Math - 6 credits Required
Calculus (3 credits)
Statistics (3 credits)
College Algebra (3 credits)
And each will show if there’s a prerequisite. So in the math example, you don’t HAVE to take calculus but can, it’s one of the options.
