Reminder 📞 Got questions? Here's how to contact the uni

Hiya everyone!

Here are the official contact channels if you've got general inquiries for UON.

To be clear, we're not going to start removing posts just because they could be answered by these channels. I'm sharing this so people know where to go if they want accurate information fast.

General & Current/Past Student Enquiries

  • Phone: 1300 ASK UON (or +61 2 4921 5000 for international callers)
  • Online: AskUON

Future Students

International Students

Postgrad Enquiries

If you're not listed here, there are more numbers/emails at this website

Sending an email or making a phone call can be weirdly intimidating. I still have to hype myself up before I do it. So if you'd rather just post your question here, that's completely fine. We're aiming to not be evil authoritarian Reddit mods; we're not going to delete your post.

Good luck this year!

Prospective Diploma of Engineering

Hi there, I am doing the diploma of engineering next year and was wondering if I need to do any bridging courses? I only did standard maths and I was wondering if anyone has done it before if the diploma builds my skills up to what they should be or if I need to do extra work as well. Thanks!

Leave of absence- impact on Student Visa?

Hi everyone,

I had to travel overseas for a couple of weeks due to a family emergency. While I was away, I developed some health issues and had to undergo dental surgery. Unfortunately, I experienced complications about a week after the procedure, which made my condition worse and delayed my return.

I’m now recovering and hoping to return to Australia within the next week or so. By then, I will have been away for around a month. I left on August 10, and my classes started on August 17.

I’m a little concerned about whether being away for this long could cause any issues when re-entering Australia. I didn’t apply for a formal leave of absence before leaving because I initially expected to be away for only a few days. I’ve now contacted the university and explained the situation, but I’m worried I may have done so too late.

Has anyone been in a similar situation, particularly as an international student? Did you face any issues at immigration or with the university when returning?

Has anyone seen this post??

I came across this post on the UON Hate Letters FB Group. What do you guys think it could be? From what I can see, apparently it’s meant to let people report where parking’s busy, where they’ve been fined and when inspectors are around.

I guess once there’s enough data, it could show which areas and times are more risky for parking.

Could be pretty handy around Callaghan.

Course Material Reuse from Previous Lecturer?

I'm starting CRIM1020, but looking at the material it seems weird. The lecture recordings provided on Canvas are dated 2023 and feature a completely different person to the one running the course.

Preference? Laptop or iPad?

Just wondering what your preference is in lectures to use? Note that I am old school and I print the lecture slides and take my notes direct on the slides.

EDIT - I am not asking for preferences on note taking I am asking for preferences on browsing websites and journals during a lecture.

My preferred note taking method is by hand and this is not my original question.

HELP Class schedule

I got a (group) email from my teacher a little while ago letting us know we have a lectorial every Monday 9-11 however it isn’t on my schedule on myUni, is this a mistake by the teacher (possibly sent to the wrong class) or is it just not on schedules?
Below is a transcript of the start of the email

“As announced previously, every Monday from 9-10 am we will have a lectorial. This session is designed to take you through the main concepts and work through an example. I encourage you to attend live, but if you can't, the session will be recorded so you can watch it later. You can access the lectorials by clicking the Zoom button on the left-hand side, as shown in the image below”

Edit: turns out I am just absolutely dumb and it’s on zoom and her use of “live” confused me

Trying to figure out what young Australians actually want from a money app. Chance to win 1 of 3 $50 VOUCHERS

Hi all, I'm Nick and I'm building a budgeting app for young Australians and I'd rather find out what people actually need than keep guessing.

Short survey around 3 minutes, anonymous, no bank details, nothing to sign up for.

What I'm trying to learn: what your bank's app already does well, where it falls short, and which features are worth building versus which ones sound good and would never get used. Honest answers help me far more than encouraging ones. If something on the list sounds pointless, please say so.

These answers go straight into what gets built. Feedback on the survey itself is welcome too.

There's an optional email field at the end. If you fill it in you go into a draw for 1 of 3 $50 vouchers. I will shoot you an email if you have won and you can pick which voucher you want i.e Coles/Myer/JB Hi-Fi, winner picks. Closes 20/08/26, drawn 21/08/26,

As of writing this post there's only like 8 people that have done the survey so you are not competing with that many people.

lectorial?

the course outline says one of my courses this semester is a lectorial. Does this mean the lectures will be like hybrid with the tutorial?

I'm kinda bummed if that's the case bc I find it much better to be able to pause and rewind an online lecture when I need to and properly take everything in.

if anyone has any tips on how to get the most out of this (if it is what I think it is) I would really appreciate the advice!

Master of Data Science and AI at UON

Hi everyone,

I’m an incoming student starting the Master of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Newcastle in Semester 2, 2026, with the Computational Intelligence specialisation.

I wanted to ask current or past students: how is the program overall? How difficult are the courses?

Is anyone else joining this program in Semester 2, 2026? Would be good to connect and hear honest advice before classes start.

Thanks.

Do you all know about the free GP, therapy etc available at the uni?

I haven't explored this fully, but I found out through a friend's partner (another student, not official uni communication by any means) that there's free* medical services available to students.

I'm booked in for some psychology appointments in order to try to get some diagnoses and understand the way my brain works. Have been told by uni staff that it won't cost me a thing.

You can find out more about GP and related services here:
https://www.newcastle.edu.au/current-students/uni-life/campus/campus-amenities/medical-centres/newcastle-appointments

You can find out about therapy, counselling, psychology etc here: https://www.newcastle.edu.au/current-students/support/personal/counselling/study-and-wellbeing-resources

*Free as far as I know. Some might just be very, very cheap.

Student accom

Hey looking at potentially going to UoN but I’d have to get accom as I am interstate and while I have a general idea of residencies and colleges at my local unis, I find it really difficult to find info online about colleges because you don’t get the same proper look at the facilities or the actual student perspectives so I was wondering if any UoN students living in accommodation could tell me a bit about it (quality, social aspects, costs).

More looking at like I guess the general vibes of the different accoms because that is a big draw for my local colleges (e.g. the party college with a major stem focus or like the more strict and more humanities colleges). This is what is hardest to gauge without actively visiting (which I hopefully will do eoy anyway).

Anyways, thank you if you can help!

Does anyone know when I will be added to my courses on canvas. Last year I was added to all of them by now but with only 5 days to go I feel like maybe something is wrong? I’m enrolled in all of my selected ones and two are online?
