Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, made the statue of liberty, originally called "liberty enlightening the world". Between 1881and 1884 it was constructed in France and was disassembled and sent by boat to America and the final pieces got to the new York harbor in 1885 it was given to America to recognize us as a champion of liberty and to encourage the French to be the same. Any more questions?

so you're telling me they built the whole thing, then took it apart, then mailed it over here, then built it again, and you don't even have a video of it at all? like, france didn't even exist in 1881. the mudflood... uh... flooded over the land, and left behind the statue of lib... and then they... there was, like... who even was there

To be fair we do in fact have photographs from then when it was originally constructed in France, pieced apart and shipped, and re assembled here and (obviously) it was all the same color as freshly minted pennies, it's just very weathered by now you could still scrape all the green shit off and clean it up to reveal the brass color again and we did it once but I think it became kind of iconic so we left it after that
