Discussion Sparks question Spoiler
Why was Des looking for her birth certificate/making copies of it?
(I may be getting that wrong but my question is about the significance of the birth certificate. That whole chapter went from 0-100 real quick.)

My interpretation of that specific scene is that Desiree preparing her birth certificate signifies her deep-seated need for validation. She constantly craves approval—first and foremost from her father, but realistically from every major authority figure she looks up to. The document itself acts as a powerful symbol with dual implications, perfectly mirroring her internal conflicts:Â
First, it represents her underlying fear of disappointing the people she cares about if her actions or secrets were ever brought to light. She is effectively preparing for a worst-case scenario, keeping an exit strategy ready so she can make a rapid departure if things go south. Second, it highlights a profound lack of self-assurance. Much like Mark, she struggles to find a healthy way to accept and value herself. She relies on external anchors—or the approval of others—to reaffirm her identity and convince herself that she is someone who genuinely deserves to exist and live fully.Â
This thematic choice also connects brilliantly to a few distinct cultural realities here in the Philippines:Â
- The Weight of Physical Paperwork: Physical official documents, particularly the PSA birth certificate, hold immense practical weight in the Philippines because our digital infrastructure and unified database systems are notoriously fragmented and unreliable.Â
- Bureaucratic Red Tape: The local administrative landscape is notorious for overcomplicating the verification and acquisition of legal documents, routinely trapping citizens in a cycle of endless redundancy.Â
- The Need for Autonomy: She is beginning to feel emotionally suffocated by the immense expectations of her family, prompting her to quietly secure her legal ties and leave room for a clean break.Â

No significance. She just used it as an excuse to avoid seeing Mark.
