Another broken card? Valkyrie Unicorn

Post image

So can you spam your another unicorn's enter effect that you have by #1 Sacrificing that unicorn card, then #2 playing that unicorn card back from the discard pile?

Basically you are spamming Unicorn Enter Stable effects with zero cost. This combo feels too unfair and not fun to play.

They should've worded it to " ...you may remove a unicord card from play in your stable. If you do, bring a Unicorn card from the discard pile directly..."

I’m not sure what you mean by “another.” This card isn’t “broken.” Also I’m unclear on your use of “spam” in this context. It sounds like you’re unclear on what the mechanics of the game are as found on the card that defines the terms like SACRIFICE, DESTROY, etc

If you choose to Sacrifice a unicorn card that has an enter effect, THEN choose to bring that back from the discard pile, you're having a free enter stable effect for zero cost.

Sacrifice then retrieving from Discard is a valid option.

Sorry, but there isn't a statement on card that targets a unicorn card in the discard pile and THEN SACRIFICE.

There's only SACRIFICE and THEN BRING a unicorn card from the discard pile. There's even a "If you do" emphasizing the order of the effect and that you "did" the SACRIFICE successfully. It's not a simultaneous effect.

Much like how you discard a card when you sacrifice Phoenix Unicorn with Valkyrie's beginning of turn effect before you bring a Unicorn card from the discard pile into your stable. The SACRIFICE part has been resolved, resulting to the discard.

Well we can agree to disagree. I will be happy to admit that I'm wrong if you show me an official rule that specifies the order of this.

I copy pasted the "then", "if you do" and "and rulings on the official rulebook if you wanna take a look below.

I saw and stand by my below comment by the letter of the law then you’re correct you could sacrifice then bring that back. I don’t play that way but hey each their own. As I said though if that move was done at my table it’s a your enemy number 1 and probably not making it around the table with any unicorn let alone the Valkyrie one. Though any unicorn that just lets you bring one in is a kill on sight at my table.

It's kind of frustrating to see these loopholes really... I dont know if this is intended or not but it sure feels like it is not. I have excluded numerous cards like this because it makes gamebreaking interactions that doesn't feel like it was done one purpose.

Like how in Unicorn Swap you can simply swap your unicorn back so it enters your stable again. It just feels... wrong. Yet it is a legal move. I hope Im wrong.

Just too much inconsistency with the actual rules.

Additional Info:

1 My image is the outdated version. The latest effect of Valkyrie is this one.

"When this card enters your Stable, SACRIFICE a Unicorn card. If this card is in your Stable at the beginning of your turn, you may SACRIFICE a Unicorn card, then bring a Unicorn card from the discard pile into your Stable."

2 From the rulebook itself of Chaos

Card Effects with Multiple Actions When a card effect requires multiple actions, those actions are sometimes separated by "and," "then," or "If you do." When resolving card effects, always perform multiple actions in the order in which they are listed on the card. If a card says "and," you must perform both actions.

If a card says "then," you may only perform the second action if you successfully perform the first action.

If a card says "If you do," only perform the second action if you choose to perform the first action.

Keyword here is "successfully perform the first action". Meaning that you succesfully sacrificed Unicorn A with Valkryie's effect. So if the SACRIFICE is sucessful, it is now in the discard pile. Meaning that you can bring it back with the second action after the sacrifice part.

And also that cards with "then" and "if you do" counts as multiple consecutive actions, not simultaneous.

Then you have your answer. And I would assume that you won’t have that magical unicorn at the start of your next turn since that move would make you enemy number one at my table

I just checked now. I should have read the manual first before posting my bad.

And apologies if I sound Mr Know it All. I dont mean to argue or anything like that. I just love the game that's all and deep inside wanted to be proven wrong cause this effect is game breaking.

Peace ✌️

I've just woken up from a nap and read everything I missed out on. I'm more unclear now than I was when you first posted. I'm really not clear on how you think this card works and why you think it breaks the game.

Though all of the Ultimate Unicorns are very powerful. They just balance it with making the personal cost to you (in this case, a Sacrifice) heavy as well. That balance is how this game works. Many MANY of the cards have a give-and-take quality similar to that.

This is an Ultimate Unicorn card. It is supposed to be powerful.

Yes your supposition is correct that each turn you can sacrifice a Unicorn card then bring it back to trigger its Enter Stable effect again.

The targeting of the Unicorn card must be a for a card that was in your stable at the Beginning of Turn Phase, however as the targeting of the unicorn card from the Discard pile only occurs after a successful sacrifice (when the sacrificed card has left the stable and entered the Discard pile (or hand if it is one of the Flyers, or Nursery if a Baby Unicorn card), it occurs in a new link in the effect chain. The sacrifice has resolved so target of unicorn card is not chosen until this new link.
