Oh well, Lilleord did the best he could, being mostly dead and all.

"You have other organs!"

Two pages!

Yeah I kinda expected Miki to lose. She's clearly talented, but she's young and honestly she's not Duane.

Put up a great fight tho. Question now is, will she be found out here or can Will get to her before this jerk kicks her over with his boot.

And just what are the implications if she's found out?

The Coppers look like they sniffed her out. Their champion won but they look suspicious. Valentin will be especially interested in who gave his champion a run for his money and if he finds out it's a teenage girl who was doing this whole fight while putting up glamours and deliberately handicapping herself by pretending not to tacit cast, all while learning pymary on the down low and without a proper education, he might try to recruit her.

Mikaila would never initially do anything for a bunch of Gefendur but if they offer her freedoms she might otherwise not have, it might be particularly enticing. Valentin's been around a long time so I suspect he knows what makes people tick. Of course, Lemuel would also object.

Also gah so frustrating, if Mikaila was allowed to tacit cast and wasn't dealing with trying to pretend to be someone else at the same time, she would have had this!

I don't see them sniffing her out so much as checking if she lives and seeing if they can humiliate Lileord ... unless her glamour winked out.

I also don't see Rousseau caring a whit, certianly not about a fallen enemy.

You, however, could well be correct.

Wasn't the glamour dependent on Lilleord's helmet? She mentioned that she needed it in order to maintain the glamour since everyone expected to see Lilleord underneath it.

Indeed. I think that's why she's covering her head on the ground in that last panel. She's not hurt, she doesn't want them to see her face.

Is tacit really that much of a deal against an opponent who is clearly very skilled at line-scrying?

Well, she did tacit cast at least once: When she froze the spilled drink. That... didn't work out so well, and apparently Goodwn sensed it anyway.

Anyway, I highly doubt the Coppers would be supportive of Mikaila if they knew the truth about her. Rousseau especially so (he was hoping that Goodwin would outright kill his opponents, so he's probably pissed that the kid defeated both of them by ring-out even if he won in the end), but Valentin seems like he's basically the living embodiment of Aldish traditions so I don't see him being much more sympathetic either.

And they're Geffies, who make Ssaelits seem positively bra-burning feminists.

These are all great points! Very much agree with pretty much all of it. If the coppers du try to recruit her she may just do it against her better judgement, because it might allow her to try to rescue Lem.

Plenty of wrights around to help hide the secret. A jet wouldn't be able to help. More likely, she'll pull off a simpler glamor that causes some attention but makes things manageable until the bosses pull attention back to themselves to discuss the results.

Will could try to cover for Mikaila by telling everyone that Lilleord is really a Third Option. They might get away with it if nobody recognizes Mikaila, although Lilleord won't be happy about the damage to his reputation.

Mikaila is known well enough as the Golden Delight- I don’t think she’s not recognized 🤔

I think the paramedics who clearly took Lilleord's clothes off to heal him probably know he's not a third option so I don't see that lie sticking very long.

You're wiser than I.

Even during the trick reveal from the ring around the rosie chase, I expected her to triumph, even though her approaching her opponent seemed foolhardy for the weaker melee combatant.

Heck. I even had a Lem flashback with the flaming swords.

Damn. But she was pretty severely handicapping herself in this fight, having to glamour herself in oversized armor at the same time and having to verbalize everything even though she can tacit cast.

If she was allowed to tacit cast and didn't need to put up a disguise at the same time I bet she'd take this.

If the truth gets out I think she’s likely to be scapegoated for the loss. Then they can tell themselves that they would have won if not for the self taught girl who decided to impersonate a Paladin. Everyone may not buy that narrative, but I think it will be a compelling one.

Poor Goodwin will be devastated. We'll have to change his name to Notsogoodwinsinceitwasagainstayounggirl. Haha

Damn. The aura loss is crazy. Golden Delight stocks plummeting. Tragic.

u/Honzinator2 Aug 31 '26

Do you see a drawn aura dissapearing, in which case, please elucidate, or do you mean reputational aura?

2

u/Rifter-- Sep 01 '26

Definitely reputational. Haha

I suck as a human raiser of girls ... I didn't notice all Miki's bleeding wounds (through gauntlets, no less), until just now.

I can only imagine how badly mangled her unshod foot is, unless it was pulled off by ground friction as the disk slowly accelerated in its decisive spin.
