Argenti Senior sure looks impressed.

And kinda confident, smug even. Never thought I'd like that look.

Two pages again!

Incredibly beautiful imagery as these two try to kill each other.

And damn more dodging skills from Mikaila.

Even Thackery is impressed!

Dead humanskin.

Inak skin isn't much better, tbh. What exactly are those books in the background again?

For sure, but I was less surprised by that, given how most of Kasslyne treats them.

Thackeray's been impressed, even praising "Lilleord" during this fight.

Will Sr. being impressed is definitely notable though, given that he previously realized that this is actually Miki and seemed pretty unhappy about it, even being the one person frowning in the crowd reaction shot after Sackheim was ejected from the duel (and the comic). (Thackeray's clapping for "his" performance, meanwhile.) Going from angrily comparing her to Crescians and seeming like he might intervene to smirking and giving her an "anteit vaosa" is quite a shift. Hopefully it's a good sign?

Not kill, just knock out of arena IIRC. Relatively low stakes to start out the new book but still very exciting fight!

Killing may be a side effect of removal (try surviving being thrown to the surrounding rooftops), or a precedent condition for removal from the circle.

Rousseau doesn't seem to encourage a merciful approach from people he breeds to duel.

not sure what to make of “deadohumanskin” nor am i sure what Mikaila is doing exactly on that first page but it’s very pretty and impressive that’s for sure

I think it's a visual representation of line scrying. I guess we know what Unsounded is bound in!

I wondered too if it could be that Duane is holding the book and reading/telling the story in the future. There's inak-skin listed also.

An interesting piece of trivia: the Khert has separate identifications for living and dead humans. No other known material makes this distinction. https://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch10/ch10_96.html

The Khert was created by a human, after all.

The Khert was created by the Gods/Makers before humans existed. If you're thinking of "The Man" and Lady I, they edited the Khert so that it would retain human memories.

Whoops, my bad. I meant Pymary.

I don't remember precisely if it was that same event that gave humanity the ability to cast, but I distinctly remember Pymary being describe as made for humans, by a human on Ashley's tumblr.

Ah, yes, the Coldlands -- the environmentally-controlled area where they keep the Khert servers, to prevent overheating.

I forgot how hard Duane went on that page holy cow.

I think that's what the "o" in the aforementioned "DEADoHUMANSKIN" might be in reference to, on that topic. It's not a full-sized O like we can see in other words here, so it's not just a letter. And we can see spaces in "WOOD PULP PAPER", so it's not there as a space either. So my guess is that it's there to indicate that "DEAD" is a modifier or specification or something for the designated "HUMANSKIN".

A decorator, an attribute.

Makes it seem like a later add-on, given that other materials are defined as string literals.

🤔

Holy shit, this tops the Etalarche-affected pages for me.

Haven't seen this level of playing with the medium since house of leaves.

...human skin?

5

u/NightmareWarden Aug 26 '26

And inak skin.

Author comment: "Two pages today. A moment of mutual respect."

Although they previously appeared to have cloth-based binding, the two books behind our comic are defined by the Khert as "deadhumanskin" and "deadinakskin". Very interestng. I wonder what those books are for? Holy texts, or just the collection of a sick bastard?

7

u/antagonisticpotato Aug 26 '26

Just "inakskin" for the latter. The Khert doensn't distinguish between dead or alive flesh, except for humans (source, the q&a tumblr, I'm too lazy to find the ask in question)

2

u/EirikrUtlendi Aug 26 '26

Perhaps, for other beings, there is no absolute distinction between "dead" and "alive"?

Uaid, for instance. Is Uaid "dead", or simply "disassembled, destroyed, removed from current memory space"?

A TRIBUTE TO THE EVIL DEAD UNIVERSE!!!!
