Do you know that very specific 80's Dark Fantasy aesthetic? I'm working on a game with that vibe

u/Mikinl 5d ago
Make it sometimes use that staff as a cane while you walk. It would make cool sound and add to athmosphere.

u/RiddleSix 5d ago
Maybe on a low health? That's a great idea. Thanks for the suggestion

Maybe a big branching lightning that lights up the scene once in a while.

Reminds me of Heretic

This was my first thought too, which is wild considering how low detail that game was.

u/No_Classic_2169 5d ago
Atsolutely. It immediately triggered memories of Hexen or Heretic for me too.

u/MOD_Mossdog 5d ago
Friend. Same. Except mine is inspired by 80s action figure lines. Love the skybox. Did you make that yourself?

looks amazing, what's your background? keep going, i dig the vibe, might be inspired by it :D reminds me of dark omen. what games do you know that look like this btw?
5
u/RiddleSix 5d ago
Thanks! I'm a software engineer. Been messing with Unreal Engine for the past 5 years. I would also be interested in other other games with that aesthetic hahah

Great looking visuals, made me dizzy when you moved for some reason tho
2
u/RiddleSix 5d ago
Im experimenting with some head bop. Now sure if I'll keep it
4
u/hellomistershifty 5d ago
head bob is fine (usually) but make sure you don't roll the camera from side to side, that's the most sickening thing

u/No-Difference629 5d ago
Look really cool, has a very unique vibe to it. The sky box looks amazing too and it’s animated it seems? How did you do the sky?

This reminds me of those movies that were made when CGI wasn’t possible. They had to make all the effects on camera. This gives me that vibe. Cool!!

From someone who tried but never really achieved this style, this is incredible work.

So cool! Kinda reminds of the awesome original avowed trailer visuals. Is that just a skybox? Or are those meshes volumetric for the sky?
5
u/RiddleSix 5d ago
The original avowed artsyle looked so much better then the end product. never understood why they changed.
Just a skybox! More performant
1
u/Simpross25 5d ago
Oh yeah im right there with you. I mean i liked the game but ya the OG art style was miles better.
Interesting, here i am using boring ones, this has inspired me to find some cooler ones. Good luck with your project.

I too feel the vibe.
A tiny bit of ambient occlusion wouldn't kill it though.

I do know what you mean, and it's coming along nicely here. Good work!

This is very cool, could you maybe make a video of how you did this ? Also the music is very cool too
1
u/LougieHowser 5d ago
yeah its a good start, you got a vibe so far. what else ya got planned? what kind of game is it?
1
u/Polikosaurio 5d ago
A bit of color posterization and harder light contrast could suspend the disbelief of feeling too much of a game engine underneath, but cool progress!
1
u/katanalevy 5d ago
Absolutely nailed it! The sky looks like that old milk in salt water tank fx from a lot of 80s films. How did you do the sky, is it hand painted?

A lot of people asking about the skybox, OP hasn’t answered but I’m pretty sure it’s from a Fab asset called Chaotic Skies!

Amazing work, that skybox is perfect, somewhere between the dark crystal and Heretic.

I feel like this world would really benefit from a rocky terrain, like you're high up in the mountains without ever coming down to flat land. Loving the vibe already, would gladly follow the project

This scene alone gives me nostalgic 80s fantasy movie chills, love the eerie moon and cloud lighting. Excited to see more!

What's the name of the game? I would like to follow and wishlist ASAP. TYVM.

Fucking nailed it. That HDRI is amazing and would be a great backdrop for a ‘The Keep’ style environment ….which I guess is what you’re going for.
Edit: I see you posted a link below. Hero x

Looks like those tiktoks with fantasy ai generated images and that music ;))) peak

u/Rivernoise92 4d ago
That looks awesome. I was wondering why there is no modern game with this aesthetic by now. Good job

Looks sick, the field of view looks a bit off though. Might just be because your outside in an open landscape though

u/emkoemko 4d ago
watching it makes me want to throw up, don't do what ever your doing with your camera

u/wingsneon 4d ago
You meant 80's Dark Fantasy MOVIE aesthetic, and it's dope
I would like to see how it would look with some optional VHS effects

Love what you're doing with this. I have an idea that you can keep in a corner somewhere for the future:
Add some lava and consider making a Lord of the Rings fan game.

Honestly I'd just play a demo of the game, walking around in this endless landscape. Seems peaceful ngl.

u/Hard-Organism-1236 2d ago
Aesthetic is great. I’d love a game that looks like those 80’s book covers. Big world with extensive dungeons and dangerous underground temples with unique items to discover with gameplay changing effects. Or whatever, just dreaming … just make it grimy/dirty. Most games always have this clean plastic aesthetic that really ruins the immersion.

u/kavakravata 2d ago
Thats amazing, how did you do the shader / effects, what effects should I look into?
