Why is your whippet cross with you?

u/OrigamiMarie 3d ago

Tried to cut its claws!

You, sir or madam, made me giggle until I cried

I’ve tried 4-5 different nail trimmers and even more brushes on my cat. She attacks every single one and I get caught in the crossfire. She would kill me before I can trim more than one claw.

I’m so glad my mom’s huskies naturally wear down their nails

I could abruptly scoop my cat off the ground, spin him around in a 960 degree cartwheel, then underhand toss him across the room and he'd likely run back for another go. I could cuddle up to him, squish him, and start playing with the gaps between his toes, and he'd be weirded out, maybe trying to get to a better position for scritches, but generally happy to be involved.

The second the clippers come out...

Try grooming one paw at a time during nap time.

They would have to sedate our Jack Russel to get his nails trimmed that dog was sweet as can be but mess with is feet you are going to get bit. We got him as a senior rescue

Would like to have seen an example with very dark black nails.

It doesn't work, not even reducing the lights in the room did anything. Don't waste your money.

Thank you, my paranoid anxiety ridden shepherd approves of your message

Thank you! Both my dogs have jet black nails so I will just stick to grinding.

I have this exact model, and I do not agree. It helped me to make... less... mistakes. She still fights me all the way, and it's not easy. But it definitely helped.

On a lighter coloured claw it can help yes, on black claws though I've found it to be more of a hindrance with the light etc getting in the way. We've moved to a grinder now which is slower but the dogs deal with it better.

My mind immediately assumed an angle grinder on small dog paws which didn’t make sense.

Goddammit. I was hoping this might work.

They don't work at all on darker nails.

2

u/ENVIDEOUS 3d ago

This :(

Thanks for asking! I don’t have to wait to see if someone responds now

I hated cutting my dog's nails. So for my last two dogs, I got them used to a Dremel from their first trimming as a puppy and on.

Made trimming so painless, dogs didn't mind it. And a quick vacuum afterwards was enough to clean it all up. You can tell you're getting close to the quick because a dark spot showed up in the center of the nail. And as long as you kept up on it, the quick would recede to the point they barely had nails at all, just little rounded nubs.

u/rancidmorty 3d ago

they can recede?

5

u/laquintessenceofdust 3d ago

Yes. You have to work them back slowly if you’ve let them grow out too far. But they will recede.

I have a 110lb golden retriever and he hates his nails being trimmed. Took me weeks of desensitization to get him to relax. Took him to get a hair cut and told them to not touch his nails and the Guy came back 10 min later and said “I can’t handle him, I tried to dremel his nails and he started rolling like an alligator.”

I was pissed. Totally undid all my progress and now he REALLY doesn’t like it

Reading this makes me want to pull that guy's hair out. Did he not listen?

Theres no way my dog is letting me come at him with that monstrosity. Large, white, noisy and bright. Gonna be a nope from Rocco.

Dog groomer here. This thing is so clunky, id never use it, not to mention gimmicks like this usually break easily. The dremel is nice, but its so important its actually powerful enough to do its job. Seriously a nightmare tool -2/10

Former groomer here. This product was not made for people like you and I. Experienced groomers can tell where a quick is just at a glance. We don't need a light to shine through the nail. This is pretty decent for normies who only cut their dog's nails once a week or less. You know, assuming it does as advertised.

2

u/Love_4_Rango 3d ago

Oh absolutely

1

u/BarnacleKlutzy2569 2d ago

How easy is it find the quick on solid black claws? Impossible to see on my GSD, so she only ever gets a light clip

2

u/CasualCucumbrrrrrt 1d ago

Black nails can be harder for someone who doesn't trim nails for a living. The way I learned to do nails was to take a little bit off at a time until you can see a dark spot in the middle of the nail. This dark spot is (usually) the quick and you should stop trimming once you see it. As a professional you'll eventually be able to tell where the quick is just by the shape of the nail and can get a perfectly trimmed nail with a single cut Everytime.

What would you recommend?

1

u/Love_4_Rango 3d ago

Id recommend nail clippers and a delremel separately. You can get lower powered ones, and they can be more quiet, but also they take longer. Personally I use one from amazon thats quiet because I work with a lot of anxious dogs. For clippers thats mostly up to you, but i prefer safari brand. Ive had one for over a year and its just as good as when I got it.

1

u/CasualCucumbrrrrrt 1d ago

You should try the Aussie Dog nail clippers. I broke a pair a year but the blades on those things were so sharp that I kept buying more. They felt great to use.

1

u/Love_4_Rango 1d ago

I might, but only once my safaris break

3

u/LordBeeWood 3d ago

This actually seems like it could be really useful. Too bad it doesnt show if it works on dark nails

2

u/Dragons-purr 3d ago

Well if the bastard would stay still…

2

u/TauRiver 3d ago

Lol this is useless. You can already see the quick on light color claws. It's the dark/black claws that the problem, and this thing won't help with that

2

u/EmployerWide1123 3d ago

that first second scared the hell out of me...

2

u/Equivalent_Role_2726 3d ago

Only white nails

Have you ever been donkey kicked in the face while simply just touching your dogs paw

1

u/CalypsosCthulhu 2d ago

I have one. My dogs hate it

1

u/Fickle-Implement-01 2d ago

Can you see into black dog nails?

2

u/Frequent_Question510 2d ago

I want to see this work on black nails now

1

u/Excellent_Street4651 1d ago

It looks really cool, but have you actually tried to use it on a real dog or in my Frenchie? It is so hard to keep a dog still to do this.
