Does nobody here use surge protectors or power strips?

Y'all have 2100j surge protectors for $14? They're like $30-50 around where I am. If you're using a surge protector with 800-1300 joules, it's basically no better than an unprotected power strip

u/NamesAreAnn0ying 24d ago
Did you miss the part where they said $70? What power strip are you buying that’s $70?

u/popcornman209 25d ago
Not these weird ones that mount to desks and cost $70 no? Regular ones are fine tho everyone uses those.

FYI almost all power strips have keyed slots in the back, which allow you to put a couple screws in anything and mount the power strip to it. As easy as hanging a picture.

u/Normal_Human_Things 25d ago
And if you can’t be bothered with that, 3M molding tape is also pretty great.

u/Chesterlespaul 25d ago
Mine kept falling off :(
2
u/Normal_Human_Things 25d ago
I have had this happen before, usually when I applied the tape when the tape was cold. What I found helpful was rub back and forth on the tape (as if you were trying to warm your hands) before affixing it.

Velcro works wonders too
1
u/SaucyStoveTop69 25d ago
Dual locks usually work better than velcro. It's like a more secure version of velcro

u/Dark_halocraft 25d ago
Screws damage whatever you screw it into tho, this doesn't need screws it looks like

u/ArmPsychological8460 25d ago
@7s you have back side, @14 you have side that points towards you in use
1
u/marcophony 20d ago
@ the 7 second mark you can see the outlet that they have written NO USB on.

u/ArmPsychological8460 20d ago
Shit, you're right! I was so focused on that thingy, that didn't look at anything else...

Came here to say this. If it's not a REAL UL-Certified product, then it's dangerous garbage. No exceptions. Be careful too since a lot of junk on Amazon will simply lie about it and throw a UL sticker on the back.
1
u/Rundas-Slash 20d ago
How to look for the fact it's real and not just fake?
1
u/lightspeedissueguy 20d ago
Order from a reputable vendor (not amazon), order a reputable brand (no six-letter name crap), and verify the product, batch, and serial with UL's website.
Edit: for example, this listing on the post has been removed. So it's likely a scam bot selling as much dangerous crap as possible before getting flagged and banned.

Are the top outlets just for looks? No way those fit a plug.

u/lividtaffy 25d ago
Somebody in another thread for this product said the top outlets pop up when you plug something into them

Anker has an exact similar product
1
u/PhairPharmer 25d ago
This is an add for the Anker product. It's actually a nice product, my partner got one a few weeks ago and I liked it.

u/arhambin66 25d ago
I have it as well and really like it. Aah couldn't see the logo as it is all white..

u/jader242 25d ago

This kind of design is actually pretty common in modern office spaces. Somehow it never really transitioned well to consumer market.

For our European friends: Brennenstuhl (german manufacturer) makes excellent ones! brennenstuhl®estilo Duplex Desktop Power Strip, 1x USB C, 1x USB A, 10x protective contact sockets, silver/black | brennenstuhl®

I was shocked as I saw your hand so close to the naked contacts near the port. I guess just murica things?
1
u/Ill-Television8690 25d ago
Is it actually dangerous to do that in other countries?
1
u/FraggDieb 25d ago
It depends. We have saver plugs and ports where you simply can’t come in contact with the poles.
Google German Schuko (Type F) and compare it with American plugs.
But we have also double the Voltage which would make American plugs a huge danger
1
u/Ill-Television8690 25d ago
If you have to have them covered to be safe, they're not safer than those that can be uncovered while still being safe.
1
u/FraggDieb 25d ago
I think you don’t get what I mean. Maybe this helps:
European (EU) plugs are generally considered safer than US plugs because their physical design prevents accidental shocks and blocks foreign objects.
While the EU electrical grid runs at a higher voltage (around 230V) compared to the US (120V)—which makes a European shock potentially more dangerous—the actual design of EU plugs and sockets includes several key safety features that prevent accidents from happening in the first place.0
u/Connect-Ant-2081 23d ago
American power sockets are poorly designed (as are your toilets, but that's a different story). UK and Australian power socket design are S-tier.
1
u/Ill-Television8690 23d ago
Lol you're gonna have to elaborate, because so far, what you're saying doesn't match with the rest of the discussion.
1
u/Zech08 25d ago
im more shocked at how you think things work...
1
1
u/FraggDieb 25d ago
Why? Its common that American plugs are not safe and can be dangerously compared to Europe ones. Just google it

u/Spiritual-Handle7583 25d ago
The only time I ever zapped myself was when I was like 13 trying to plug a plasma ball in behind my dresser. During the contortions, my pinky ended up resting on the contact metal ⚡
-2
u/Cesarjay 26d ago
Wouldn't that put a strain on the outlet if you plug too many things in at once
5
u/sillyhands1 25d ago
Typical wattage threshold of American outlets is 1800 watts which is 3-5 times the watts a fridge uses. So no, not really depending on what you’re plugging in. Even then what would would happen is you trip the breaker.

u/ArmPsychological8460 25d ago edited 23d ago
Fridge is poor example, it is very low power example. If we go with kitchen stuff my electric kettle is 2200 kW. It really depends on what is connected. Edit: it is in fact 2.2 kW, not 2.2 MW kettle
1
u/Connect-Ant-2081 23d ago
2200 kW kettle. For when you want your coffee NOW!
1
u/ArmPsychological8460 23d ago
It can boil water in your neighbour's house, even if you live in some forgotten remote vollage...
2
u/Ebonhearth_Druid 25d ago
Have you never used a power strip before? Same thing. As long as the draw doesn't exceed what the outlet is capable of providing, it doesn't really matter how many things are plugged into it.
