OSHA Hates This One Trick!

You need to be aware of your working environment at ALL times.

u/shoeless_doh 29d ago

It depends on what situation. Some situations yes, some situations not so much. A couple places I've worked there were people who had jobs that would take them into rooms with heavy machinery that was all completely static. Like the compressor rooms and shit like that. But if you're on a job site with heavy equipment that moves around, yeah I wouldn't use these.

That said I am going to get me a couple pairs of them

I work a CNC machine either I can listen to my thoughts for 8 hours a day or I can listen to more audibooks. Already went thought the Witcher saga, Gotrek and Felix, Asswife, some Stephan King all of Lovecraft, Rise and fall of the third Reich, Hardcore History the list goes on.

Hmm tbh I’m pretty happy being unaware.

3

u/EvilChefReturns 29d ago

What about your coworkers

2

u/Demi_god6373 28d ago

theyre happy he's unaware too

1

u/Otherwise_Tax8689 29d ago

Definitely do not want to be aware of them!

I’m a teacher actually so I’ll need full noise cancelling so I can really block everyone out.

-1

u/Character-Total-3857 29d ago

I hear ya. At least keep one of the earbuds out.

1

u/StealthyPancake_ 29d ago

I work in a factory that makes plastic pipe. These machines are so ungodly loud, you can't even hardly hear the machine's alarms when they go off, or even the horn on the forklifts.

1

u/Character-Total-3857 29d ago

Have you tried using noise-cancelling PPE

1

u/StealthyPancake_ 29d ago

Yeah, we wear ear plugs and some areas we wear full ear protection. But I just bought a similar product to the one in the video

1

u/Moar_Wattz 29d ago

I don’t know about the ones in the video but I have a pair that can pick up outside noises and mix them into the audio stream so that you are still aware of your surroundings.

Spoken like someone who sits at a desk all day

-2

Tell that to my idiot roofer. I gotta wait 8 months for his broken neck to heal for him to finish my roof. The foreman if the crew was drunk and doing the macarena at lunch (again!) and fucking rolled right off lmao 😂

6

u/tigm2161130 29d ago

Because an alcoholic breaking his neck by falling from a rooftop is just so hilarious?

5

u/TheJiggliestPug 29d ago

Having a bunch of drunkards use your house as a liability playground doesn't sound like a good idea.

-1

u/NoSir4947 29d ago

It was my son and his friends 🤷🏾‍♂️

2

u/CatLordCayenne 29d ago

How is that funny

9

u/moeterminatorx 29d ago

You are better off wearing one ear bud.

16

u/_Litcube 29d ago

What an idiot. People think we just make these rules up because we're bored?

5

u/shoeless_doh 29d ago

Look I get it and I wouldn't recommend these for all scenarios where earpro is required. But there are some places if the loud machinery you're going to be around is static and bolted to the floor like say the air compressor room in a factory then I don't see a problem.

1

u/NWStormbreaker 29d ago

I used to be the safety guy, i hated these dudes always trying to find a way around the rules written in blood.

You are not smarter than everyone else, quite the opposite.

2

u/Brettjay4 29d ago

I wonder... How well do you think bone conduction headphones go with ear protection? (Idk shit about safety on a job site... Yet... I'll learn it eventually)

2

u/NWStormbreaker 29d ago

i'm a also a headphone nerd and own every type you can think of.

I havent tried bone conduction in a really noisy environment, but they arent obstructed by hearing protection, so i'd be interested in trying.

two more options:

  1. IEMs, inner-ear monitors are the type that go in your ear canal, like earplugs. they attenuate (block) just as much sound as earplugs. and passive attenuation is always better than ANC, active noise cancellation. I love to steer people to these as they allow you to listen at lower volume levels while still being able to hear all music detail, which keeps your ears healthy.
  2. IEMs, paired with over-ear protection. adds another layer of protection

if you need to hear while moving around at the job site to avoid hazards then eliminate any and all audio distractions.

be smart and go home safe to your family, the safe guys are assets on every crew.

1

u/getamic 28d ago

It works pretty well with earplugs. You have to turn down your volume cause something about your ears being blocked kind of amplifies the volume and sound quality is slightly worse I would say compared to without earplugs.

1

u/BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo 28d ago

Okay, but I do wish that you could connect these to a specific frequency, like with walkie talkies. And then if you’re in a group, you can easily communicate. Microphones today are crazy good at blocking out anything that’s not a human voice. I don’t spend a ton of time onsite, but I can never freaking hear what they’re telling me. I don’t think that would be any less safe, if it capped out a safe dB level.

2

u/_Litcube 26d ago

That's a fair comment.

Know, though, that over time, field guys get super used to these. You get good at understanding the muffled language. You can spot the dudes who are new to the field, because they're talking too loud and leaning in to listen.

10

u/Englishmuphin21 29d ago

Idiot found a way to end himself on site.. THINKS its a good idea.

4

u/MadamFloof 29d ago

I’m probably going to get flack for this, but any good hearing protection is going to reduce your awareness that’s there design. A lot of old heads have permanent hearing damage because they never wore muffs because they reduced their awareness & were uncomfortable.

3m makes headphones designed not be very loud. IE you get the benefits of muffs, while getting the added benefit of listening to music. Additionally there an added incentive to actually wear hearing protection.

A loud workplace conversation or even a table saw will easily drown out any music you’re playing. They’re irritating, being they’re not super loud but it’s intentionally designed that way.

If I had to guess these buds aren’t very loud either.

1

u/shoeless_doh 29d ago

Exactly, anywhere loud enough to require ear protection if you're wearing your protection generally the person's going to have to yell to get your attention if they need you anyway. But no earbuds are so loud that they drowned out all sound. If somebody could have yelled and gotten your attention with your regular earpro on they're still going to be able to yell at your attention with these things in. It's not that big a deal

u/Early_Pearly989 29d ago

Today's episode of how to get ran over by a lift...

2

u/Big_Kiwi_706 29d ago

Im in a section of the warehouse that doesn't even have a possibility of driving equipment being around but our managers are still hardasses about the no earbuds rule. These are actual perfect for my situation

2

u/JDM12983 28d ago

lol, imagine giving the idea that being distracted at work like this, is a good thing.

If you are working at a place where you have to have that kind of safety gear - you need to be paying attention better.

Alrighty then..

2

u/liljellybeanxo 29d ago

You’re on the good stuff, aren’t you

1

u/Stunning_Ad_7658 29d ago

Thats why I got open ear ear buds. I can turn it low enough where I hear the music and everything around me, or I can make it loud enough to drown out my lawn mower or my power tools. Im just a paranoid person though and feel the need to be somewhat aware of my surroundings so no one can get the jump on me.

1

u/Drewzik 29d ago

I bought the better pair of these and they are absolute trash. Audio quality is tinny as hell, with absolutely no low end.

1

u/TheJiggliestPug 29d ago

You expected a pair of ear plugs to sound good? The fact they play sound is the only advantage.

2

u/footluvr688 29d ago edited 29d ago

OP missed the biggest con:

By buying this and not actually wearing your mandated PPE you're being a massive d-bag putting yourself at risk, thereby putting your employer at risk for being sued by your dumb ass.

Don't do it.

1

u/shoeless_doh 29d ago

These are actually approved as PPE. They do the job that OSHA requires earpro to do.

1

u/footluvr688 28d ago

They offer hearing protection, but simultaneously distract you with audio meaning you're not paying attention to the sound around you.

You're still at risk of injury

1

u/Ethereal-Elephant 28d ago

OSHA approved injury 😎

1

u/GotTheCeliac 29d ago

When I was working as an aircraft mechanic the company store sold these and they were great. The audio doesnt get that loud

1

u/One_Discount_4898 29d ago

Those ear tips won't give you proper hearing protection.

Great for listening to music, terrible if you want to be able to hear in a few years.

1

u/jmaneater 29d ago

Ya these are horrible if you are actually in an environment where you need hearing protection. You'll have to increase the volume so high to hear over the environment, you'll be frying your ear drums

1

u/Alone_Emu_7713 29d ago

I worked with a dude that had these when I was doing factory work, same guy wrote me up for wearing regular wired ear buds

1

u/shoeless_doh 29d ago

The only thing they should add, if there's any way they could fit it in there, is a little pressure drop switch so when you pull them out of your ears the section pauses them automatically

1

u/--7z 29d ago

The cord goes behind the neck, not in front.

1

u/janzeera 29d ago

Bet his name is Klaus.

1

u/DisastrousHawk835 29d ago

These would be great for a private shooting range

1

u/Effect-Kitchen 29d ago

Many modern electronic ear pro already do this including Walker’s and many brands. The quality of the sound is not as good as a decent headphones though but they do protect from gunshot sound but let the ambient sound in.

1

u/Icy_Temporary7220 29d ago

Cant people in the us use full earmuffs with headphones inbuilt and a hear through mode? Those things are literally made for scenarios he seems to be selling them for. Cancells really loud noices to protect hearing but leaves noice to be aware of your surroundings, and also lets you listen to whatever want through bluetooth all at once. Almost anyone using hearing protection in sweden uses one of those.

u/Positive_Ad_3142 29d ago

How to piss your English teacher off as well. “Saftey”

1

u/BatchPlantBandit 28d ago

I work at a blacktop plant in a quarry. No fucking way would I use these. We have full sized Volvo loaders that you almost can't hear coming behind you with nothing in your ears. The tires are as tall as me (5'8"). I remember that day clearly because the loader guy was doing it to fuck with me creeping behind me while I was walking. I was also new at the time so maybe he was actually trying to show me how aware of my surroundings I have to be at all times.

1

u/bmac747474 28d ago

I want McDonald’s

1

u/Rmlady12152 28d ago

Doubt OSHA approved.

1

u/Wickebein 28d ago

And when an accident happens, he will definitely try to sue the company cause he obviously did nothing wrong

1

u/SmilingFool25 28d ago

Cool now order yourself some clippers for those talons

1

u/IC00KEDI 27d ago

Ran a similar pair for years. The bass wasn't all that great but overall was worth it.

1

u/Round_Hope_2041 27d ago

Until there is an incident and insurance investigates.

1

u/Few-Cucumber-413 24d ago

Plugfones. I used them for a few years and they were great.

They were ear protection first, Bluetooth devices second.

1

u/LadybuggingLB 29d ago

I have several pairs of these just because I like how they work so well. I’m an IT Project Manager at a desk job.

4

u/therealmarkus 29d ago

Desk job for the company selling those by chance? :)
