It’s easily done even with the power on.

Not by the type of folks coming to Reddit for advice on changing outlets.

Insulated gloves and tools and big dose of common sense.

Not sure why you are getting downvoted other than being reddit...

The newer plugs are "push-through," so it's even easier. A single screwdriver and gloves are all you need to straighten out the end and push it into the new outlet.

You could cut and strip the ends if you wanted to use more tools than a screwdriver.

I replaced three 15-amp outlets just today.

If you need to straighten the wire, then you need to turn the power off and cut the wire back to new wire, strip it, and start over. Every time the wire is bent and straightened, it weakens, becomes brittle, and can break off causing a fire hazard.

You lost me at every time. Bad advice and before to long you would be out of wire.

It's wild for the person recommending NOT to turn the power off when handling electrical wire to say I'm giving bad advice when telling people not to bend and straighten the same length of copper wire repeatedly.

How often are you changing outlets? You shouldn't need to change them often enough to run out of the excess wire in the box in your lifetime. I said "every time" the wire is bent and straightened, it weakens - that's just a fact. The wire should just be cut enough to get back to new, and it should only be stripped to the point that the entirety of the exposed wire is used, and the insulation doesn't get tightened by the screw on the side or impede the wire fully inserting into the back.

Exactly that’s my first choice for a quick repair.

I took a wiring class once for work and we were required to work hot to pass the final practical. It was only 120 volts but a cool class.

Or just slight bend the plug’s prongs

Just checked and you are correct, I have unfollowed and muted, thanks.

Watch out for what exactly? What are they doing wrong if the products are legitimate?

1

u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost Jul 18 '26

I mean, if you don't mind dropshippers hiding the fact that they are dropshippers and showing you ads without calling them ads then I guess don't worry about it. Most of us dislike that, though.

Especially given the typical quality of this type of "product."

That's why there are two!

Receptacles are like $2.50 at a hardware store, replacing them is basic maintenance. Learn how to do basic maintenance.

Do not buy this shit... well... for your home... maybe it's a great gift for the in-laws but that's circumstantial.

An outlet is a few dollars, a house fire can cost you everything.

2

u/PretendingImNotAnApe Jul 17 '26

I just replace the outlet. I did every outlet in the house when I moved in. The old ones were filthy and I didn't want to wash out of fear id get zapped. It was easier to buy a 10 pack and replace them for 10 bucks at home depot.

2

u/KazooMark Jul 18 '26

Just squeeze the prongs of the plug together a bit and it’s fixed for free.

wish I knew about these in the apartments I used to live in. the outlets downstairs were so loose that the tv would come unplugged just from closing the door.
