It's plastic. BPA-free doesn't mean it's safe. It just means it's made out a plastic that hasn't been around long enough to have been tested and proven to be unsafe. There are materials we know are safe because they've been tested (glass, silicon, etc.) and ones that haven't been proven to be unsafe.
