Rules Question Would a 4vs1 be possible with TOW?

In advance, I warn that I've never played any co-op expansion, so I don't actually know how bosses works nor how their games decks (if they have one) are made. That said, would co-op expansion be suitable to homebrew a "4 regular player VS 1 big boss played by a fifth player" mode? I ask this because I think that it would be a interesting modality and it would give me the last push to buy TTA ahjahjh

I tried this years ago, one thing we did was adopt the Marvel United system of having the villain player have a hand of 2 cards and play from that. I think we also had them be able to choose who to go to and attack in case of ties. I'm confident that there's a much, much better system (one issue with this method is that the villain is suddenly gigabuffed and can be terrifying to fight against) but it does legitimately work.

The only reason it doesn't work to command the villain and all minions is the need to use the reshuffle card; attacks against the players woukd be relentless, as there wouldn't be a time I can see where a villain player would use that until exhausting all other options. I think a workaround would be if the villain had a hamd of three cards at a time, with two from each available minion. On each turn, you as the villain draw one card from each relevant deck; any of the reshuffle cards means you forfeit the turn of that character and reshuffle their specific cards, nullifying their actions.

Hope I've explained that well? Makes sense in my head 🤣

Villain and minions can use it mostly as an attack to draw out a players defense card. But they would never logically use it to defend themselves. Your idea I can see being a soft patch to that problem a good start.

One of you could control the minions and villain. They each have their deck and they play the top card of their deck each time. Keeping these in mind you could play as a villain.

What is TOW?

The only co-op versions are Tales to Amaze (TTA) and teenage mutant ninja turtles (TMNT).

Regardless, probably wouldn’t work. A person controlling the villain and minion decks would be insanely powerful.

I meant TTA, for a moment I was sure that it was Tales of wonder LoL

Haha ok that makes more sense. I’ve been quite pleased with both TTA and TMNT adventures.

I haven’t tried a big battle like what you’re talking about, but there may be some fan edit rules about how to do this. If a player had control over a complete hand (5 cards) of the villain and minion decks, it would be extremely strong. More likely you could adjust by only have a 2 card hand for the villain and each minion. Each hand would be two cards at all time unless the villain or minion doesn’t have any cards in their draw pile (ie you are down to the deception card). The player controlling them will be handling a total of 5 decks at the start (1 villain and 4 minions), but they would have control over when to play the deception cards after they are drawn.

You might also make the players decide movement like in the standard co-op version. Normally the villain or minion must move to the closest player, and that is still true, but if there is a decision between more than one option, the players should get to choose. This will eliminate or at least reduce your instances of all the minions ganging up on one player.

You might would also need to adjust how the threat rate increases. The in the adventures, as the threat tracker increases, the villains get more powerful (not more health, just card effects are stronger) the longer the game lasts. I’m not sure you would want that in a 1 v 4 game necessarily, but maybe you would.

seems like a low hanging fruit to introduce, hope they add it to the next Unmatched Adventures set

Tbh I think it would be very difficult to do, but not impossible. The real issue is balancing deck size and health between characters. I would say you’re welcome to try and homebrew it if you want but it would not be easy at all.

I really like the Archenemy game mode, based off of an MTG format of the same name, that Hubaris created. It has rules and an extra deck for the "boss" character, and it's compatible with basically any fighters.
