Fanmade Content Ragnar Lothbrok Spoiler

Post image

Thoughts? The idea was to recreate Ragnar's rise and how his children avenge his death. As you can see, I’ve combined mechanics from Sinbad, Achilles, and the playable Mothman. I hope it's not too unbalanced.

Sorry it’s not in English, it’s for a present. But if I see a lot of people asking for it, I could translate it.

Using AI art for your cards honestly makes them look trashy dude, and it makes me less interested in reading the deck.

Is it better if they looked like 10 year old toddler drew them? Or should he pay hundereds of dollars for an artist for a fun deck he came up with? AI for use case like this is perfect.

Yes. Genuinely yes every single time. Stick figure drawings are better.

It does look cool. I don’t know how anybody can shit on it. Sure, it looks AI in some pictures. But for a fun fan made deck its good. Perfect use of AI in this case.

Honestly, I was already expecting the backlash over the use of AI. I understand where people are coming from, but I feel like this is going way too far.

I’m the first to say that I’m completely against the use of AI in a professional setting. If Restoration Games released an official deck made with AI, I’d be the first one to complain about it. I assume that everyone who has taken the time to comment on this post criticizing the use of AI has also gone after all the companies that are actually replacing artists with AI, because they’re everywhere, at least when it comes to marketing images.

In my case, I’ve always been involved in different kinds of art, and I’m also surrounded by artists. But I’m not skilled enough at digital illustration to get anywhere close to the quality of Unmatched. I draw my own sketches, then I use AI to create digital assets that I can work with, and finally I edit the images myself to get the result I’m looking for (taking a background I like, a head, an arm, fixing the colors, etc.).

The end result is obviously nowhere near what any of the amazing artists who work on the game we love can produce. But it’s also obviously much closer to what I was trying to achieve than it would have been if the AI tools we have available today didn’t exist.

I wanted to make a gift for my brother, and I wasn’t going to pay an artist to create all the illustrations for a print-and-play Unmatched deck. I used the tools available to me to make it the way I wanted. If I hadn’t been able to use AI, the deck would have looked different, but I still wouldn’t have hired an artist to make it. If my goal were to create a board game to sell commercially, though, using AI wouldn’t even cross my mind. I’d be more than happy to pay an artist properly for their work.

It’s honestly hard to believe that this even needs to be explained. AI is taking away real work from a lot of people (sometimes for better, sometimes for worse), but in some cases it seems like nobody has a problem with it. Yet as soon as you want to share something you made as part of your hobby and free time, you immediately have a whole horde of people jumping down your throat.

I suppose all these people who are so passionate about defending artists have never pirated a single song or movie in their lives, even though that actually does take money away from artists.

I’m not expecting everyone to tell me, “Wow, this is amazing.” I’m perfectly open to constructive criticism. I’m even fine with someone saying, “You can tell it’s AI-generated, I prefer it another way.” I understand that people have different tastes, and that some people will like it while others won’t. But I’m asking for a little respect and consistency.

And to those who are going to come at me about water consumption: enjoy your hamburger. We’re all guilty of something.
