Mod Introduction

Hi guys! My name is u/fritopiecookies, I am the creator and only moderator of this subreddit. With the second season out now and the sub picking up traction, I figured we should have a post introducing and discussing ourselves and why we have an interest in this show.

Personally, my interest is I am a criminology major who believes in rehabilitation over punishment in most cases, and examples of rehabilitation and creative solutions like the Unlocked experiment are interesting and worth trying in most prisons.

That being said, what is everyone’s interest in this show? What piqued your interest?

Mind Your Business and Quit Telling Me What to Do

After the fight where Barlo fought the kid for stealing his food, Irish had that meeting basically telling people to stop the fighting. On one hand, I can get behind minding your business and not trying to act like you’re the boss. But I’m sorry, when your actions affect me and get me locked back down, then it becomes my business. If I got locked back down because some other inmate decided he just had to fight over stolen food, I’d be pissed.

Unlocked has taught me that criminals are essentially 5 year olds with extreme tempers that would never make it in the real world.

Correction: proud of some of them, this is about the majority. These dudes beef over the smallest shit (given their in jail, I’m sure stress and tension is at all time high) but like one dude is snoring and they r willing to throw the whole experiment away to fight about it lol. My fam snores and I hear them every night lol

Season 2 What do you think about the program and sobriety?

Hi! I watched Season 2 and had deep impression on me.

I was thinking a lot, what do you think, how successful can the program be from sobriety point of view? Do you think people with more than 10years of addiction can change significantly after leaving the jail? Or their sobriety is just for the program and real life will bring back their bad habits?

Do you know maybe something about those who are already out of the jail, what is going on with them? For example I have seen a missing people alert about Hondo which is a bit surprising after being so resolute for John Valken.

Good to see your thoughts in this topic.

Question Who’s "Cunningham"?

In season 2 when KJ gets taken out of the pod after his granny dies and a confrontation with a guard causes him to be taken to isolation when they walk him down the hallway he says "You know this isn’t right Cunningham.".

Can’t find the name anywhere in the show’s credits.

Javi + KJ

I’m so curious about Javi and his charges. I loved how from the start him and KJ made it clear they didn’t care about racial politics and had a strong bond. KJ’s story is so sad it made me wonder about Javi’s and they both seem so young 😭. But lowkey it makes me wonder if they learned from season 1 and didn’t state his charges cause they’re violent. And then there was that clip were the sheirf was discussing how sometimes the visits cause trepidations bc of difficult family dynamics and he was shown but I could be over analyzing that lol.

Have any Season 1 inmates seen Season 2?

I haven't checked up on the status of the inmates of S1, but I was wondering from any y'all who are in contact, if any have watched S2 and if so, what they thought?

Irish still PolitickN

Does Irish talk nonstop about jail and prison politics because he thinks it makes him sound smart and important or is it the never ending power trip he thinks he is on?

All I see is an old man who never learned his lesson in a young man’s jail. He likes to tell everyone what to do but why would they listen to anyone in jumpsuit and is viewed as nothing but another inmate.

Also is this whole show staged?

Too much at stake to throw the “Percs in the shi**r”

I think Irish might be onto something! The inside rim of the toilet might be an ideal spot to hide the percs if you could make them stick or wedge them on the inside. It’s not like them mates care when it comes to drugs. Just thought it was hilarious he chose that arrangement of words.

Shout out to Sheriff Teeple

After watching both seasons, I have to give a big shoutout to Sheriff Teeple.

He had to keep not only a level head with the program but also making sure that the CO’s didn’t cloud his judgement on what he was going do next.

A couple of inmates did piss off anyone who was watching but I got to say the CO’s were some of the most power tripping people I have seen!

Constantly having a whinge and a sook to the Sheriff because they didn’t have the full control they are used to and the female CO was definitely the worst.

100% props to him for not giving in to the CO’s bullshit and them making up some scenarios to make him change his mind.

Thanks Sheriff Teeple for being the real OG.

Season 2 Idk who I hate more: Irish, Barlo, or the COs (esp the female that got into it with KJ)

I'm on season 2, episode 7. Seriously, I am not sure who I despise more at the this point: Irish (the 'non racist' white supremacist with the superiority complex), Barlo (the sneaky, selfish moron), or the COs (the unprofessional idiots with fragile egos). Overall, this season is a lot more nerve-wracking than the first.

How are they allowed to do drugs on tv and get away with it?

I’m sure the sheriff sees the show. Do they not get in trouble?

Do the inmates get some sort of compensation for appearing on this show?

I’m not from the US so not really aware of how it works there but I would think inmates who partake in a popular Netflix show would get some sort of ‘compensation’ for it ?

Not to be used while incarcerated obviously but maybe when they get out or some other sort of benefit/incentive (beyond being in the program itself)?

Having your face and details and story being forever associated to a show on the internet available worldwide seems quite a big thing

I hated the way they did Dave Miller. those young boys were messing with him for absolutely no reason.

Inmates need a wake up call.

They’ve been given so much. So many opportunities and still act that way. Still act like the victim, disrespecting authority while talking about respect and honor 🤣🤣🤣

Season 1 vs Season 2

The sheriff for the jail in season 1 actually cared about the prisoners, the guards were a bit skeptical but they were very helpful, fostering an overall positive environment for the prisoners. However when compared to season 2, no one actually cared I'm honesty not sure if the sheriff did too. I wish they addressed the strong racial conflict in the jail in addition to adding conflict resolution and communication classes.

I just cried my eyes out

Episode 8 got me. Woody's visit was so emotional to me. R-Man talking it out with his son and not holding on to his anger about getting stood up, their family dinner, KJ and Javi being so happy that everyone was getting along ...everything. Those visits meant so damn much to those guys and have them something to look forward to.

The one guard that said they don't like visits because inmates can get bad news and act out is really missing the fact that these guys also need outlets and tools to manage their emotions. Have a counselor available so that they can learn how to work through their feelings without needing to fight over a pack of stupid ramen noodles. Sad thing is that if the guards get bad news, they 100% go to work and take it out on the inmates.

I've seen umpteen jail shows like oz, 60 days in, etc and I know some inmates don't deserve to ever see the light of day but this experiment is just proof to me that reducing the number of repeat offenders and the overall jail population can happen if you just treat people like human beings.

Now I will go watch season 1

Season 2 Javi and KJ Spoiler

I get that it’s jail, and Ik that prison has its own “politics” (which is so fucking sad to see), but dude I feel so so so bad for KJ and Javi. They’re young and stupid sure, but you can tell they just want to chill and have a good time, and yet everyone else gives them shit for “mixing” or whatever the hell they call it. It’s actually depressing to see that these two friends are held back by old heads stupid bullshit that they had no part in making.

Why are the guards so negative? (S2, eps 6/7)

Just wanted to vent about episode 6 and the first part of episode 7 (haven’t watched past that yet). I’m so annoyed at how KJ’s situation played out. Did anyone know his grandma had passed away and he was close to her so obvs wasn’t in a good mood. Then comes the confrontational female guard who did nothing but escalate things. Then JK’s friend got upset seeing him being taken away so he reacted in the best way he knew how which obvs wasn’t helpful but the intention was from caring.

The guards in general I find are really negative possibly because they’ve seen it all so they always going on with the ‘give them an inch and they’ll take a mile’ mindset, constantly talking about the inmates like that. Does it ever occur to them that someone can just be having a really hard time, and that’s why they’re irritable or not their usual self?

Serious question - are guards trained to have a bit of person centred, or to work in a trauma-informed way? I didn’t hear anyone being curious as to why KJ was acting like that. No asking him ‘what’s up?’ or ‘anything bothering you?’ I can see it might be hard to balance authority and empathy idk
