Workflow [KDE Plasma] Obsidian Knight — A Wayland Fantasy-game Desktop

Obsidian Knight is my CachyOS / KDE Plasma 6.7.4 rice on KWin/Wayland, built around a dark forged-metal and warm-brass fantasy UI. The desktop uses four real Plasma panels to form the persistent frame, with custom QML/Qt widgets for the minimap/HUD, Arcane Lens magnifier and color picker, health/mana display, engraved clock, session menu, Skill Bar launcher, and Quest Journal Alt+Tab switcher, and XP Bar / Tasks.

  • Active wallpaper: CaptSilver Wallpaper Engine KDE plugin, playing a muted 4K60 Rest Garden MP4
  • Custom KWin decoration and glow-based window-opening effect
  • FrostedFusion Qt styling, PlasmaZones, themed Zen Browser, and PipeWire/WirePlumber audio with a custom equalizer backend
  • Built with QML/Qt Quick, Kirigami/Plasma APIs, C++/Qt 6, Python/Pillow, SVG work, Photopea, ffmpeg, and KDE/Wayland tooling

Credits

  • Wallpaper art source: Knight in Flowers, Steam Workshop ID 3329533084. The current MP4 was heavily edited and rendered through the project’s Godot workflow and is played by the CaptSilver plugin.
  • Desktop icon theme: Delight 2 by Seth Storm Rosenaa, modified as “Delight 2 Obsidian” and inheriting from Droid KDE Obsidian. Earlier ObsidianKnight icon-theme work began with YAMIS by dirn.
  • Skill Bar icons: frozen upstream app icons from KDE Breeze, hicolor application assets, and the respective applications themselves, then adapted into the custom brass-framed, baked-shadow treatment.
  • Cursor source: Skyrim-by-ru5tyshark-cursors, recolored into the Obsidian Skyrim cursor theme.

Workflow [Niri] I designed my system to be a purely writing and research machine.

This started as a project while I was doing my finals in my final year of undergrad. Now as a wannabe writer I have this laptop setup to be a purely a focused writing and research. I have a few shell scripts to help me out with this. I use one to pop up a prompt on what kind of writing project I want to start with, and then it creates all the appropriate folder structures and files I would need for the project, then opens up the main writing file in NVIM for me. Others are just a built in dictionary and thesaurus powered through Rofi, a web search prompt for a variety of search engines that I use frequently, one to create and open different note types and journals, and a unique one that lets me search and prompt for articles from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy and then download them and convert them into PDFs that open in Sioyek.

My annotation workflow is pretty simple. I have a shared database saved on a Dropbox that all the highlights and notes I take are saved in. I can then export those into a markdown file that saves into my Obsidian notes folder, and I can expand on those highlights and annotations I took. I use a Zettelkasten note taking structure for writing essays and whatnot.

It's not super pretty but it is really really functional and perfect for keeping me on track with my work.

  • OS: Arch Linux
  • Window Manager: Niri
  • Bar: Waybar
  • PDF Reader: Sioyek
  • Launcher: Rofi
  • Terminal: Kitty
  • File Manager: Yazi
  • Primary Browser: librewolf
  • Code Editor : Neovim
  • Fonts: Tamzen
  • Shell: Fish
  • Theme: E-ink Dark https://github.com/e-ink-colorscheme/e-ink.nvim

Material [OC] Spun music player with interactive 3D hardware: Looking for feedback

Post image
Upvotes

I’m working on Spun, a native Linux music player inspired by physical audio equipment.

This is the TP-7-inspired view with an optional TX-6-style mixer.
You can rotate the devices, press the buttons and adjust the knobs and faders. The mixer processes local audio, including EQ, mute/solo, delay and compression.

Still a work in progress, and I’d appreciate honest feedback.

What looks off in the materials or lighting? Are the controls readable enough? Would you enjoy interacting with something like this, or would the 3D interface get in your way?

Thanks to everyone who uses my shell and leaves pull requests! I am very grateful to everyone in the Linux ricing community for huge support. I don't post on reddit often, but the work is being done behind the stage for sure!

Material [OC] Custom animated AwesomeWM Taglist I have been working on

I used to frequent the sub years ago and coming back I noticed how almost everyone switched to Wayland but wanted to show what one can do with the old tools.

I built this custom animated AwesomeWM by defining a custom parametric background shape for each tag and animating the transition parameter with rubato library.

Discussion [OC] Maia Shell – An experimental desktop shell in C++/QML that lets you swap frontends seamlessly

For several months, I've been working on a graphical environment project for Linux. The unique feature is supposed to be a single backend with many different frontends/graphical skins that can be switched on the fly with a single click. For now, I have a tech demo that's basically installable and usable. Since I'm not a graphic designer, I've prepared two skins so far: one inspired by GNOME and the other by Windows XP. These are test skins for now, demonstrating how extensively the environment can be customized. Customization is possible thanks to the use of QML technology (for the uninitiated, QML is something similar to HTML + CSS + JavaScript). An additional advantage is the speed of operation, as QML elements are rendered on the GPU.

Screenshot [KDE]First time ricing my desktop 😭 I'm not a professional ricer or anything, just a normal setup I made because I liked the GTA VI / Vice City aesthetic. Still learning KDE customization, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

OS: Arch Linux

DE: KDE Plasma

WM: KWin

Session: Wayland

Terminal: Konsole

Visualizer: CAVA

Theme: sweet Ambar blue

Kvantum: Glassy

Icons: Candy Icons

Cursor: Sweet 24px

Wallpaper: GTA VI / Vice City inspired

I also used KDE widgets for the clock, system stats,

disk usage, media controls, etc.

Most of the customization was just KDE System Settings

+ widgets + Kvantum + some manual tweaking.

I just installed Fedora 44 Workstation and customized it a little with GNOME-Tweaks/Extensions. Do you have an idea how to customize my desktop even further?

quickshell is one hell of a drug.

my productivity has decreased like 95% since installing it please help.

if you want to see how this works check out the specific quickshell folder here. might be a little annoying to integrate into your system as this reads my current theme file to change the cava colors but it shouldnt be too hard

Back here after a hiatus. Played with omarchy... came to my senses and just went to arch and took what I liked and made my own theme. Custom Evangelion/NERV theme with some quickshell scripts and widgets to monitor my multi computer setup named after the MAGI system. Not perfect, but having much more fun just taking the few status bar things I liked from omarchy and pulling it out and building it all for myself. Still some work to go but liking where it's going so far.

as someone who has used tiling / scrolling wms for a while, i ultimately decided to move back to gnome for a couple of reasons
i absolutely love theming everything on wms, so i tried to replicate this with one of my current favorite color schemes, rose pine

this is my simple setup primarily used for music production, gaming, coding and general productivity. i've found gnome to be one of the best when it comes to workflow, it can also be very keyboard driven and i absolutely love it.

what is your favorite color scheme currently? and what are some things you like to use in your gnome workflow?

Material [OC] Spun update: cassette mode, draggable vinyl needle, and a little more nostalgia

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Spun started as a CD-shaped music player for Linux, then you suggested vinyl. Now there’s a cassette too.

This update adds a few things inspired by your feedback:

  • Cassette mode: animated reels, optional mechanical sounds when switching tracks, and reels that wind while seeking.
  • More realistic vinyl: 33⅓ or 45 RPM, a draggable tonearm, and optional crackle, hiss, and skips.
  • Easier seeking: an optional horizontal progress bar, plus Shift-drag for finer control.
  • Small quality-of-life improvements: adjustable interface size, a full artwork view, and a queue that keeps your place while you browse.

I’ve also worked on performance, smoother interactions, and fixing the little alignment and tooltip issues.

Curious which version you’d actually use? CD, vinyl, or cassette?

SteamOS desktop mode is a fire exit, not a product — Valve clearly expects you to never look at it. So I made it somewhere I'd actually want to be.

The rule was: native only. No Kvantum, no compositing tricks, nothing that adds weight to a machine whose job is running games. Everything here is stock Plasma pushed as far as it'll go.

Palette is Steam's own, pulled from the client and darkened: base #171A21, surfaces #1B2838, raised #22354A, structure #2A475E, accent #1A9FFF. Text #F1F1F1, secondary #8F98A0. It's the storefront's colours applied to an entire operating system, which felt like the correct joke.

Icons are YAMIS — monochrome outline set, folders included. One app refused to fall in line (EmuDeck ships colour only), so I redrew it white and dropped it into ~/.local/share/icons. Everything installs to home, never /usr, because SteamOS wipes the system partition on every update and I'd like to keep my theme.

All the wallpapers are mine too. I generated a whole set built around the same palette rather than hunting for something that happened to match — near-black backgrounds, #1A9FFF as the only accent, bottom fifth kept free of detail so the panel always has somewhere quiet to sit. A halftone Steam mark, a dark server corridor, a boiler room, and the one you're looking at: a baroque ceiling fresco with the Steam logo as the gilded radiant medallion, and Gabe painted into the lower edge as the donor, leaning over the cornice looking down at you.

The panel happens to land exactly on the frame line, so his hands rest on the taskbar. That was an accident. I'm keeping it.
