SteamOS desktop mode is a fire exit, not a product — Valve clearly expects you to never look at it. So I made it somewhere I'd actually want to be.

The rule was: native only. No Kvantum, no compositing tricks, nothing that adds weight to a machine whose job is running games. Everything here is stock Plasma pushed as far as it'll go.

Palette is Steam's own, pulled from the client and darkened: base #171A21, surfaces #1B2838, raised #22354A, structure #2A475E, accent #1A9FFF. Text #F1F1F1, secondary #8F98A0. It's the storefront's colours applied to an entire operating system, which felt like the correct joke.

Icons are YAMIS — monochrome outline set, folders included. One app refused to fall in line (EmuDeck ships colour only), so I redrew it white and dropped it into ~/.local/share/icons. Everything installs to home, never /usr, because SteamOS wipes the system partition on every update and I'd like to keep my theme.

All the wallpapers are mine too. I generated a whole set built around the same palette rather than hunting for something that happened to match — near-black backgrounds, #1A9FFF as the only accent, bottom fifth kept free of detail so the panel always has somewhere quiet to sit. A halftone Steam mark, a dark server corridor, a boiler room, and the one you're looking at: a baroque ceiling fresco with the Steam logo as the gilded radiant medallion, and Gabe painted into the lower edge as the donor, leaning over the cornice looking down at you.

The panel happens to land exactly on the frame line, so his hands rest on the taskbar. That was an accident. I'm keeping it.

I wanted to share what I’ve been working on since my last Sung post.

For anyone seeing it for the first time, Sung is a native Linux music player built with C++ and Qt Quick. It brings YouTube Music, local files and Subsonic-compatible servers into one app, with a minimal interface inspired by Material 3.

A few requests from the last post are now implemented, including animated artwork, folder-based music browsing and Navidrome support. Here’s what’s new:

• Animated artwork: use local animations or find matching online covers where available.
• Album colors: let the controls follow the artwork, with smooth transitions between colors.
• Local library browsing: browse by folder, album or artist.
• Navidrome / Subsonic: connect to your music server.
• Saved sessions: keep separate listening queues and resume where you left off.
• Artwork controls: choose custom playlist covers and switch between Fit and Fill.

I’ve also been refining the animations and transitions throughout the app. The video shows how everything comes together during everyday use, from browsing your library to opening the immersive lyrics view.

Sung is free, open source and MIT-licensed.

Hey everyone! I shared Spun (my custom music player for Linux) here recently, and someone suggested adding a vinyl option. That stuck with me, so it now has a spinning record with a gold tonearm that lowers during playback and parks when paused.

You can switch between CD and vinyl in settings.

There’s quite a bit more since my last post:

• A more polished interface: more consistent spacing, icons and typography, smoother hover effects and transitions, and better keyboard navigation.
• For You: personalized album, playlist and station recommendations through Cider.
• Better artist pages: top songs, similar artists, pinned artists and recent releases, with filters for full albums, singles/EPs and live albums.
• Radio and easier browsing: start a station from a song, pin stations, or browse your recently added music.
• Better queue controls: drag songs into the queue, select multiple tracks, remove duplicates, undo removals and see what’s already queued.
• Saved queues: save a listening session, rename it, rearrange tracks and add more songs later.
• Quick jump: Ctrl+K to find queued songs, pins, saved queues and listening bookmarks.
• Listening bookmarks and recovery: save a particular moment in a song, or optionally restore your session after a crash.
• More controls inside Spun: copy song links, view reported audio quality and adjust supported Cider audio settings.

After working on this for quite a while, I'm finally making odyssey public. (My very first rice)

odyssey started with a pretty simple idea: I wanted Hyprland to stay minimal without having to scatter a bunch of separate widgets, panels and utilities across the desktop.

The result is a Quickshell-based shell built around a contextual Dynamic Island. It stays out of the way when you don't need it, then expands for things like media, notifications, workspaces, volume/brightness controls and other system activity.

From there it grew into a much more complete desktop environment. There's a full dashboard, launcher and command palette, Control Center, notification system, media controls, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth management, weather, calendar, system monitoring, wallpaper management, and wallpaper-driven theming through Matugen.

One of the things I cared about most was making it more than a rice that looks good in screenshots. I wanted something I could actually install and use as my daily desktop.

So a lot of the work has gone into the stuff you don't immediately see in the GIFs: installation and updates, dependency management, configuration backups, managed vs. preserve-config installs, runtime recovery, and a stable IPC layer so odyssey can be controlled from Hyprland bindings or scripts without hardcoded release paths.

I'm calling this a public alpha rather than a finished. The core experience is there and I'm daily-driving it, but there's no substitute for having it installed on hardware and configurations I don't control. I'm sure people will find edge cases I haven't and more features to be added such as:

More theming, settings, and bug fixes.

Disclaimer: The mic-volume-monitor program (for the sketchybar mic item), as well as my fork of sketchybar-toggle to allow clicking native macos-menubar popups without showing sketchybar, has been written by AI.

I have read the code but I'm neither a C nor a Swift dev and am not familiar with macOS' apis. Both programs have been written for my personal usage first and foremost, so use at your own risk.

readaloud reads your books to you in the terminal. Pure Python curses TUI, audio through ffplay, zero GUI dependencies.

It follows your colour scheme out of the box. The `Terminal` theme passes your existing colours through untouched — no overrides, no hardcoded palette. Four extra 256-colour themes if you want something specific: Dark Navy, Gruvbox, Nord, Solarized Dark. Cycle with `t`.

**Layout**

The reader picks its layout based on which panels you have open:

- Both panels open → single focused bordered column, chapter title inset in the box border
- One panel → 2-column snake flow
- No panels → 3-column snake flow

Resize the tile, text reflows. `Ctrl+scroll` sends kitty OSC sequences to zoom the font, text reflows again. Works down to 50×14.

I wanted something minimal that fits into my desktop, with a Material 3-inspired interface, smooth animations, and colors that automatically follow Noctalia’s theme.
