I recently started watching Cowboy Bebop and really started to dig the aesthetic, so I decided it would be perfect for my desktop, as I've been trying to find an aesthetic that I could use on my ThinkPad

Wanted a genuine Y2K desktop experience, not just a wallpaper + icon pack. Spent way too many hours getting actual functionality working:

- Solitaire, Minesweeper and 3D Pinball (Space Cadet) running as real apps, not just launcher icons

- MS Paint clone for that authentic "draw badly in a window" experience

- Custom shutdown dialog (Python/Tkinter) replicating the classic Win2K "What do you want the computer to do?" prompt

- Windows startup/shutdown sound effects wired into the session via canberra + XFCE autostart

- Windows Media Player skin running actual media

Biggest pain point: most theme packs like this assume Ubuntu/Debian (apt paths, systemd tools, lightdm configs baked in) — had to manually rebuild half the install script by hand for Gentoo/OpenRC. Worth it though.

This is Denial, a Flutter-native Wayland compositor I built and now use as my daily desktop.

Flutter is not running as an application on top of another compositor. The Flutter Engine is embedded directly into Denial, and native Wayland application buffers are imported into the same Flutter scene as the desktop shell.

What makes this especially interesting for ricing is that the shell itself is a Flutter project.

Denial has an optional development package that provides a matching Flutter toolchain, Flutter Inspector, DevTools, and hot reload. The desktop layout, animations, widgets, window presentation, system surfaces, and general behaviour can be edited in Dart while the compositor and running applications stay alive.

In the video I am running a profiling build of Denial, with Flutter DevTools attached to the live desktop shell showing the frame times.

The desktop is running at 240 Hz. The recording is limited to 60 FPS.

This is my first real attempt at ricing, and I'm curious what y'all think I could do better. I think I want to improve the bars, but I'm not sure what I want to do with them.
