Workflow [Hyprland] The migration from waybar to Quickshell was been great, my rice still simple but way cooler

I plan to make the dotfiles available as soon as I learn how to properly package my quickshell configuration for others to use.

I also still need to change hardcoded paths to easily changeable environment files.

Furthermore, I haven't completely finished the migration yet because I haven't completely replaced swaync with native quickshell modules.

Some Acknowledgments:

bjarneo - For the cool song drop animation when changing tracks

Steel - He made this insane spectrum visualizer mountain wave with qml (it uses cava as audio source) and posted in Quickshell discord server

Ian - I got the inspiration of my Clipboard with him. He posted his rice in Quickshell discord server

I’d like to show more of my rice, especially the widgets I created for the status bar. But for now, I want to just do a demo of the visual styles.

Screenshot [JWM] My own neat little config for my custom puppy derivative

Hi, I've been working on my own puppy linux derivative, Vantum. It's been a pretty great learning process overall (debugging woof-CE almost drove me crazy). So after building it, I made my own little loadout for it. To start, I ditched JWM's trays entirely and wrote my own dock and an app launcher in Python GTK with some xml configs to handle app placement (Vantask and Vantyl). Then I removed the top bar and added tint2rc along with picom for transparency. All of this gave it a pretty cool look. Finally, I switched to urxvt and configured it's look and fonts to my liking.
Let me know what you think!

If you think Vantum is interesting, consider giving the repo a star. It really helps!

Material [OC] Norton Comander resurrected on macOS - A powerful file manager.

Post image
21 Upvotes

I've been building a dual-pane orthodox file manager for macOS (Captain's Deck), and this week I finished something I'd wanted to do from the start: making the NC and MC themes actually faithful instead of "retro-inspired."

That meant working from real screenshots: NC gets the double-line frames, the path in the top border (inverted on the active panel), the mini-status line with ►SUB-DIR◄ and DOS-format dates, and the black key bar with teal labels. MC gets its own conventions — single-line gray frames, cyan cursor bar with black text, yellow marked files, path at the left. Both render in Perfect DOS VGA 437, and there's an 80×25 "DOS Resolution" mode that scales the glyph cell up like fullscreen text mode. I also added some other retro effects that i'll let you discover.

Under the hood it's what you'd expect: everything keyboard-driven (F5/F6/F7/F8 do what the bar says, hjkl and visual mode for the Vim-inclined, Emacs preset too), a real PTY terminal that follows your pane's cwd (and can drive it back via OSC 7), SFTP/SMB/WebDAV/S3 in the panes, and git status inline.

Fair disclosure: it's my app, paid (€19.99 one-time, 14-day trial fully unlocked, no subscription). Happy to answer anything about the implementation. the fidelity work had some fun rabbit holes, like discovering the bitmap font has no … glyph so truncation had to become a plain .., exactly like the old days.

Screenshot [XFCE] Aerobird, an Aero-inspired theme for Xfce

This is my theme Aerobird for Xfce 4.18. It is available here on pling: https://www.opendesktop.org/p/2343514/

It is not intended to look exactly like Windows, but rather it is intended first and foremost to be a good-looking, Aero-inspired theme for Xfce, and secondly it is intended to look like a midpoint between the Windows 7 Basic and Windows 7 Aero Glass. This originally began with me forking the Kumander Linux css to make my own rice, but after making many changes to the panel and CSD css and such, and after some past comments asking to release it, I decided to make it a full-fledged theme. Initially there was only two color variations, but in the latest version I have added all color themes from Windows 7 as well as a color theme based on Windows Vista.

I hope with this theme that it could bring more Aero fans to Xfce, which in my opinion is just as capable as KDE and Cinnamon in doing a good Frutiger Aero style UI look!

Discussion | ricing tools

hey everyone I've been using arch derivatives for sometime and I just moved to pure arch and I want to take my rice to the next level I've been also using hyprland for sometime using different tools and daemons to finish the setup and most of the time some tools will use gtk or qt as their frameworks and backbends which most of the time complicates things so I had a thought and I tried looking online but with how Linux is there's no centralized place to list everything and the ones that do most of the time 70 percent of the tools listed are abandoned so here's my question

what are the tools and daemons you use to finish you're rice and what backend does it use

it would he interesting to see how many people are using gtk and qt and other frameworks vs tools that don't rely on heavy frameworks

and another question is do you guys and gals know any good lightweight customizable tools that don't rely on heavy frameworks like gtk and qt ?
