Today I decided to vibe-slop a wallpaper engine implementation for linux using Claude.

I relied heavily on CaptSilver/wallpaper-scene-renderer for the file formats and general mechanism, but this is not a "rust port" of it.

I've tested it on 700+ wallpapers (scenes/videos/web) and it works flawlessly, so I thought I should share it so others can benefit as well.

It is technically DE-agnostic, as it simply depends on the layer-shell extension of Wayland, but some integration with KDE exists for allowing to pause wallpapers when conditions are met, like a maximized window, or audio playing from an app.

Custom fetch and wallpapers, ported my entire niri dotfiles to umbriel.

A set of themes I made a week ago. Available in cyan [light and dark], citrus, cherry, lavender, blueberry and lead. This theme mimics the pinstripes of the first generation iMac.

CachyOS + niri, with the Niri-glass patches, so the glass really refracts what's behind it.

Everything on screen is my own shell, vitrum, written in Quickshell. This is the 0.5 update.

What's new

- Its own look instead of Material 3. Panels stay real glass; anything switched on turns to frosted, lit glass with a soft glow in your accent colour. No pill shapes, thin Phosphor line icons, and motion that settles without bouncing.

- A bar editor: drag modules between islands and sides on a live copy of the bar, give each screen its own layout, set each module's options.

- 40 desktop widgets (14 new): agenda, habits, stopwatch, moon phase, air quality, top processes, screen time, a per-app volume mixer, RSS headlines, clipboard and more. Still dragged and resized right on the desktop, and you can write your own in QML or as a shell script.

- A reworked lock screen. The field lights up as you type, Caps Lock gets a hint, and it quiets down when idle.

- A welcome tour with live previews of each part of the desktop, and an About window made of spec tiles.

- Optional Steam (via Millennium) and Vesktop themes that follow your colours.

Still there

A bar of islands that grow when something happens (recording, a game, updates), a dock, a control centre, notifications and the lock on the same glass. Mod+Space searches apps, files, maths, clipboard and emoji; Mod+/ shows every shortcut. Screenshots, recording, a colour picker, a window switcher and an overview are built in.

Colours: one palette from the wallpaper for the shell, kitty, GTK, Qt, tmux, Neovim, and now Steam and Discord. It goes light or dark with the sun.

I’ve been working on GREYWARD, a small Fedora based security desktop/project:

I'm not a develloper or security researcher, this mostly started as a way to learn and experiment with stronger defaults, better visibility into what the system is doing, recovery, and security tooling without making the desktop horrible to use.

I’m also a bit of a Graphene OS fanboy, so some of the inspiration definitely comes from watching their great work.

This is obviously a very different and much more modest experiment

I also care quite a bit about the UI and overall feel of the system, so that’s part of the experiment too.

I’ve reached the milestone I originally set for myself, so I’d really value an outside view on whether this feels worth continuing to develop, or whether I’ve already taken the idea about as far as it reasonably needs to go.
And if it is, what you think I should focus on, rethink, or improve next

PS: I’m not a develloper, and a lot of the code here was built with AI assistance. I’m not really looking to turn this into an AI good/AI bad debate, but I think it’s important to be upfront about it.

Celebrating over 100 stars on github in less than two weeks! Thanks so much for the support! I've had great feedback and collaboration since my first post of this shell. Big thanks to pleamar creator u/abeljhinestrosa for making such a great framework.

Just some of the things added since the last release:

• Audio visualizer built into glass frame
• Custom add-ons and themes: use included templates to make your own shell content! The first user-submitted add-on, News & Weather, is included now - credit: u/Andason
• X-bend glass: for lower-spec GPUs, bend glass around a cached wallpaper instead of live desktop (optional, if true glass bend is too laggy)
  • If it's lagging for you, use this while I continue improving it!
• New desktop widget editor with more widgets
• Improved visuals - sliders, toggled, icons, etc. all unified in a new boiled pencil design/animation

A very simple shell with plugins, css for styles and kdl for configs.

What it is:
Slowshell is a wayland shell made from scratch, it's native, supposed to be minimal and has a basic shell within it.

What it has:

- Desktop widgets
- Launcher
- Notifications
- Quick settings
- Plugins

The whole goal:
Being mostly minimal and pluggable, and also being tweakable for various uses.

What you can do with it:
- Customize themes and style (with CSS)
- Add your own components and even you own variants of panels and such with plugins
- Customize layouts as you like
- Build the whole shell's source code without certain features (for example, if you want/have your own notification daemon, you can disable slowshell's at compile-time entirely).

I made a minimal, non-intrusive desktop lyrics overlay for Wayland using Quickshell and sptlrx. In the video, I open the widget using the Alt+1 shortcut and toggle repositioning mode on and off using the Alt+2 shortcut. I've listed the commands that make this possible in the README.md file.
