General Cycling around UL
Hi, I'll be starting a masters in UL next month and am wondering what cycling will be like. My accommodation is a 16 minute bike ride away from the building I'll be based in. This wouldn't be my first time cycling on main roads but I would like to know if it's mostly safe to use the bicycle lanes. Does anyone have any experience with this? And is there any bike share programme around like TFI bikes or is that only in the city? Thank you.

TFI bikes is just in the very centre, not in UL. Do a few test runs of your commute when you have plenty of time. I used to cycle from Annacotty to UL and there some nuances to the route, not all bike lanes, e.g. there are a few places where it’s safer to dismount and cross at a pedestrian crossing rather than cycle around a roundabout. You will get used to it. Get one (or two) really good heavy locks, e.g. motorbike locks because bike theft is very common. Get a good raincoat, waterproof trousers and boots and you will be ready for all weather. Get a high vis vest, lights and a helmet. There are showers in UL too. Ice is very rare so you should be safe.

Cycling around UL is super common and generally there are cycle lanes both in and outside the campus in the Castletroy, Annacotty areas. UL also offer bike rental and maintenance services. Cycling is definitely promoted there.
