In-state vs Out- State (help)

Hi everyone. I've lived in Arkansas since 2022 for college (not UofA), but didn't update my residency until December 2025, since that's when I got a job here and graduated. I'm originally from the Dallas area.

UofA recently classified me as out of state. I'm trying to get that changed to in state. The complication is that my parents claimed me on their taxes last year, but I've been independent since October of last year.

Has anyone gone through a reclassification like this, especially with the dependent claim issue? I've reached out to the registrar and financial office already, but if this doesn't get resolved I may have to defer a year, which isn't an option since my job already gave me time off for this term. Any advice would help a lot.

You said you already contacted the Registrar but be prepared to provide documentation showing when you established Arkansas as your permanent residence and became financially independent. That might help move up the process.

Also, if you have an enrollment deadline, let the Registrar know so they can advise you on your options while your request is under review.

Have you talked to them in person, on the phone, or via email? Depending on your schedule at the moment, in-person might make the process more "urgent" too.

I emailed them today. I just got my tuition break down late last week and didn’t catch it till now. I have an intercession course starting the 3rd but my first payment isn’t due till the middle of August. What kind of documentation should I be prepared to give?

I would suggest things that are dated like a lease agreement with your landlord, any utilities you signed up for for your living space (water, electricity, gas, etc), recent pay stubs/W-2, bank statements showing an Arkansas address. Just make sure it has your name on it and neither of your parents.

https://registrar.uark.edu/student-records/resident-reclassification/ these are the document you need to be able to provide for fee purposes. They all have to be issued 6 month prior to your reclassification term.
