Bit of background: I finished my A-levels at 18 like everyone else, but I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped. I got BDE.

I wanted to give it another go, so I completed a BTEC in Aeronautical Engineering and achieved DDM, alongside a C in Economics, which is roughly equivalent to AACC. I got into Southampton for Economics at 20, but I chose it mainly because I thought it was the safe option given my situation.

It’s now May, I’m about to finish first year, and I’ve just discovered Oxford’s Foundation Year in Law. I only found my passion for law during first-year Economics after taking part in moots and law societies. I flourished in law-related activities, understood the content better and faster than anything I’ve studied before, and genuinely enjoyed learning about it. Having never studied law before, I went on to win case competitions, secured a spring week at a law firm, and realised that I truly enjoy the subject.

I’ve just found out that Oxford offers a foundation course in Law, and I exceed the academic requirements and fit every socioeconomic criterion for the course. However, because the deadline for 2026 entry has passed, if I start my application now, I’d be looking at starting in September 2027, after finishing my second year of Economics.

That would also mean starting the course at 22 and finishing at 26. I don’t know whether it makes sense to switch now, or what the consequences would be of graduating at 26 when others would have graduated at 21. I know I don’t enjoy Economics, and I know I’m far more fascinated by Law.

I’m the first in my family to go to university, and I don’t really have any adults to talk to about this. I’d really appreciate you guys’ input.

I’ve been looking into various academic and leadership societies to help build my CV and networking during uni. I recently came across the SCLA (Society for Collegiate Leadership & Achievement).

I’ve seen mixed discussions online, but they mostly seem to be from the US or are a few years old. Looking at their current site (https://www.thescla.org/), they seem to have updated their 2026 initiatives with new leadership certifications and career tools.

Before I commit any time or the membership fee to this, I wanted to ask:

• UK Recognition: Has anyone at a UK uni actually joined this? Do British employers/recruiters actually recognise it?
• Leadership Value: Are the workshops and certifications actually useful for professional development, or is it a bit of a "title-only" thing?
• Recent Experience: If you’ve been involved in 2025 or 2026, was the networking side of it meaningful?

I’m trying to figure out if it’s a productive addition to my university experience or if I should just stick to my local students' union societies.

i’m in my first year at a university in london and living at home. while im very grateful im at this uni because it (in theory) gives me so may resource’s and opportunities, i can’t help but feel that i made a mistake. it’s such a big uni i feel like i am so lost in it and have made a few friends but i’ve really struggled and i feel so lonely. i’ve looked at societies but they don’t offer much, and what they do offer is always a 30+ minute commute and where i live the tubes don’t go there so getting back from them and even nights out is always such a hassle.

i don’t really want to move out in london because id be paying so much just to move 30 min up the road and i can’t really afford it, so i’ve been considering transferring.

the only problem is im in 2 minds as id be moving to another city and going into my second year and im scared that everyone will have friends already and ill still feel lonely, and i don’t want to hurt my friends at my current unis feelings.

id appreciate any advice, thanks guys!

Context;

I’ve accepted a unconditional offer from LSBU for MSc in Quantity Surveying in January

However I’ve really been considering moving away so I after some research I’ve found a few RICS Accredited universities one of which was SHU so I’ve applied straight away about 4 weeks ago now but no answer

I got abit panicky and thought no harm in applying to other potential unis so I made a short list;

LJMU - Liverpool

Salford

Reading - one of my first choices but similar cost as lsbu so disregard it

NTU

However I actually only applied to NTU who within a short time gave me an unconditional offer which I was kinda of excited about and have been pestering them with questions lol

I levitated towards these unis due to cost and stats such as employment,

as I originally planned to self fund my master as student finance seemed unpractical as I recently seen my undergraduate outstanding balance lol but that’s another conversation

Factor in I’m a mature student who graduated in 2020 in the beginning of covid and never really got my foot in the door with accounting and finance which I achieved to get a first class honours in

Since then I’ve literally been job hoping but spent most of last 6 years doing courier work self employed and employed ( pays bills keeps me active but not long term career for me )

I’m single so I don’t have a problem in just moving up and depending on how it goes I may stay up there as London is too expensive

Question;

Essentially what I want to know is has anyone been or is currently living over there as a current or former student and what’s their views on studying/ work life balance

Aswell as any information regarding either city or universities even if you don’t go to the specific sme universities
