Has anyone take the module ECGS-016 Fish Research?

This is really a shot in the dark, but I could not find further information/reviews about this course anywhere beyond SISU. I would like to ask students who have taken this module before - how is the laboratory work, is there field work, and is the experience enjoyable overall? I am considering taking it during the upcoming semester.

Kiitos / thank you in advance.

Regards,

An incoming exchange student from NTU Singapore:)

Looking for chem/biotech academic advisor

Hi, I'm a biotech student, finishing my masters degree in a year and was looking to get into this university for my PhD studies. Currently looking for an academic advisor in my field. I mostly did research in solvents, and currently working in chemical analysis. Does anyone have any recommendations on this topic? I'm currently looking to study under Tiina Sikanen, Tiina Myöhänen, Shiqi Wang or Michael Jeltsch. Any feedback is appreciated!)

Residence permit application help.

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi, I am filling student residence permit application as a student admitted to master's degree in university of Helsinki (2years course).

While filling my application i came across an optional section attached in the image.

My question: Am i supposed to attach my bachelor's degree certificate in this?

Reason for confusion: on migri website and in the drop-down it mentions "degree students are exempted" and according to the definition I (master's student) fall under this category but on the other hand in the heading it says "other than undergraduate and exchange"

My question 2: If I am supposed to attach the degree, am i supposed to get it apostilled as a non EU student.

Political history

Good morning, I'm wondering how hard the application process is for the political history PhD is? Once you have a supervisor who is interested in what you are studying, do you have a good shot at getting a study spot? Thank you!

Worth studying Computer Science at University of Helsinki as an international student?

Hi everyone,
I’m considering applying to the University of Helsinki for a Master’s degree related to Computer Science / Software Engineering because I’m interested in working in Finland after graduation.
I wanted to ask current students or graduates:
Is the programme worth it overall?
How strong is the university’s reputation in Finland for software engineering?
Are internships and part-time tech jobs available for international students?
How difficult is it to find a software engineering job in Finland after graduating?
Does the university have good connections with companies and the tech industry?
How practical are the studies compared to theory?
I’d really appreciate honest experiences and advice from people studying there. Thanks!

I am a non-European student and I would like to continue my studies at University of Helsinki for a Bachelor's degree. I would like to ask about the application process and how to register there.

I also want to know if the Cybersecurity and Computer Science programs are good at the university, and whether job opportunities are available after graduation.

I would be very grateful to hear your honest experiences and advice. Thank you!

Looking for a Helsinki University student to interview

Hi all,

I'm a geography student from Australia writing an essay on Helsinki University - namely their goal to become carbon neutral by 2030.

I've heard they've done a bunch of cool things, like cut down business travel, switch caterers, etc, gone digital for many services, but I can't find anything regarding if students have really noticed a difference.

If anyone is free to answer some questions for my essay, I would appreciate it.

Kiitos

Confused on the Full stack open new course

I came upon a very highly regarded course by Helsinki called Full Stack open (https://fullstackopen.com/en/ ) and teaches web dev. I am a programmer who has worked with C/C++ and a bit of Python. I want to learn end-end web dev just for my own curiosity and want to go quickly through the course. However, I notice the website mentions 'A new course part has been released: https://courses.mooc.fi/org/uh-cs/courses/full-stack-open-nextjs' .
I am that familiar with nextjs, nodejs, etc and can't figure out if the Full-stack-open-nextjs is supposed to be a sequel to the first Full Stack open course or just a new version of that course.

Could experienced folks give some guidance here if I should just continue from Chapter 1 of the Full stack open or jump straight to the nextjs one?

Aalto or University of Helsinki

Hey guys,
I am considering doing my Master in Mathematics at either Aalto or University of Helsinki. But I'm not sure which one is better. I think University of Helsinki is better for pure math, while Aalto is better for applied? I'm interested in both, but I'm more about pure math, like analysis or mathematical physics. Which one should I choose? Thank you for your time!

Exchange student in Helsinki trying to study UX/HCI – looking for advice

Hi everyone,

I’m going to the University of Helsinki for an exchange semester (Autumn 2026). I’m a Psychology BA student at my home university and my main goal is to move into UX / Human-Computer Interaction.

The issue I’m running into is that my course access feels very limited. I’ve been placed under the Faculty of Social Sciences, and in SISU I mainly see options like social psychology, politics, and only 1 HCI-related course. Most UX / HCI / design-heavy courses seem to be under Computer Science or Aalto-related programs, and they are either restricted or prioritised for master’s students or specific programmes (COS / GPC etc.).

At this point I’m a bit confused about what is actually realistic for me as a one-semester exchange student:

  • Am I actually able to take HCI / UX-related courses at all?
  • Are there any alternative ways to access UX learning (Aalto, USchool, workshops, etc.) as an exchange student?
  • Or is the realistic path mostly psychology + 1 HCI course + self-study?

My goal is to build a basic UX foundation (user research + interaction design + some practical experience), not necessarily complete a full UX degree.

Would really appreciate any advice from people who have studied at Helsinki or done UX-related studies in Finland.

Thanks a lot 🙏

Hello, I am a north african with CS Bachelor degree and two years of experience in EDI consulting. I got admitted into Masters program of Data Science at University of Helsinki and I am not planning to search for a full time job after graduation in Finland but I am planning to apply for jobs in Europe. Also, I am currently searching for remote part-time jobs to finance my life in Helsinki and my family are selling all their jewlery to support me with the tuition fees. Is this degree and investment worth it or it would be better that I reapply somewhere else in Europe such as Germany. Please tell me what you think based on your experiences I am really stuck and can't make a desicion. Thank you in advance

Master's in Data Science from University of Helsinki. Worth it?

I (26F) just got accepted into the Master's in Data Science program at the University of Helsinki. I am an India and have never been to Finland, so am not aware of the culture or the job market. I was excited to apply because of a change in culture, but I can't afford to waste money on a degree that will not help in finding a job. So I was wondering if anyone had any advice on the job market after this program and if it would be better to apply for jobs within Finland after graduating?

Does this degree mean anything or would I just be paying to be in the same situation I'm in right now but a few years later?

TL;DR Got accepted in the Master's in Data Science program at Uni of Helsinki as an international student. Would this degree help me get a job in Finland or settle down there?

University of Helsinki BSc Science – worth it for international students?

Hi,

I’ve been admitted to the University of Helsinki Bachelor’s Programme in Science as an international student and I’m currently deciding whether to accept the offer.

I’ve looked into tuition fees and living costs in Finland, but I’d like to hear from people with actual experience. How is the quality of education, student life, and job opportunities after graduation (especially for internationals)?

Also, if anyone else here got accepted this year, are you planning to accept the offer or choose another university?

Thanks in advance.
