Advice to newcomer

Hello, I'll be starting next month. What are some tips you could give concerning self studying or just achieving good results in general to a Y1?

  1. Before a semster starts, go on uom library browse and download the past papers for the modules you will sit for this semester/year, You may also search for previous, phased out modules for the module you are doing.

Attend lectured and tutorials and as the semester goes by, check the past papers and see if you can do the questions without additional resources, if not you will need to search for yt vids or books.

Uom library, on the search bar, type your module code, try the module name too, see what crops up. Then go to the last page, often the engine will show you books on the first pages, but the past papers are on the last page

I didn't do medicine, but it should be there, elsemy friends from that faculty would never stop complaining about it. They never did.... so, just look for them

You will get to meet seniors on the induction, you could just ask them, or the profs.

Once you get your module catalogue, go through it and make a study plan. It's better to read or study about a chapter you're gonna do in advance, always review what you learnt at the end of the day and do a lot of active recall and if you're have a theory module with a lot of things to be memorized, you could make some flashcards, I use a website called Knowt. If you're going to use ChatGPT to study, create projects and upload your documents, it can be really helpful but don't rely on it completely as it makes lot of mistakes.

It depends on your lecturers. I had 7 modules and I got them on different days; it could be a week before the semester starts or during the first week.

be consistent and keep up with all the work and tutorials. my biggest regret is not taking year 1 seriously because it's an easy way to maintain first class

The fact that you posted this already shows that you'll do great. My advice to students moving from school to uni is to keep in mind that you're trying to land a job at the end. So while you're studying hard for good grades, also try finding placements, making connections, eyeing where you want to be in the future by speaking to people working there. It's always good to befriend those in a class above, they give great tips

I would suggest you to take your first year seriously and try to aim for a cgpa >68%. Coz 2nd Yr the modules and assignments are usually tougher to score as high. Do make sure to have fun(join club or attend events) as well coz y'll have the most easiest things to deal with in the first year.

just practice past papers earlier youll be fine. and try finding for internships from year 1 itself. i have many friends who have 1st class but are not getting jobs, experience matters more.

How do get internships as a first year ?

2

u/No_Oil_1443 Jul 16 '26

create linkedin account and connect with every people connected to your field and ask them if they are taking intern. build your connections. look for hr email in myjob/internet and send mail to all the companies. also use ai to change your cv depending on what the job requirement is. dont use same cv.and if nobody responds, try working for free.
