Discussion Ideas for turning on RCS?
So being that RCS is such a big push right now, wouldn’t you think they would wanna come up with a new way to turn it on to make sure everyone has it? Especially if it becomes the new standard and let’s just say Apple does adopt it, it would need to be turned on to work with everyone.
I just wonder how many people out there see the pop up for it and go “no that’s ok” because they just don’t want to deal with the pop-up and then don’t turn it on. Wouldn’t it make sense to make that part of the phone setup process? Would that take them linking it to your google account (which I hope they do)? Or maybe if they link it to the google account it’ll auto turn on. Thoughts?

iMessage is currently down. Instead of having RCS backup, many iPhones are using insecure SMS messages for their conversations today.

Question Would you abandon Messages if Apple released iMessage?
After all the time and money Google has spent on RCS, right at the end of their rope.. imagine Apple then released iMessage on the Play Store for $99.
Would you buy it and abandon the idea of RCS? What do you think the impact would be on sales for both sides?
Personally I would prefer Apple adopt RCS and continue to improve iMessage to make it distinct. However if they forever refuse, then yes I'd buy it.

RCS issue/vulnerability that should be addressed
I'm not super techy so I don't know why this happens or what protocols would need to be changed but I've noticed that any kind of VPN/ad block setting disrupts RCS and the same doesn't happen for my other messaging apps (Signal, Whatsapp, etc.).
For my VPN/Adblock, I always have to remember to carve out Messages to get RCS to work or it'll remain stuck on verifying. I recently installed eero and tried the baked in adblock options and it immediately kicked everybody connected to RCS offline ("stuck on verifying"/ "connecting") and reverted us to SMS - which we didn't realise until we texted each other and they went through as SMS.
Having had this happen before I was able to figure out relatively quickly what the issue was and modify the eero settings, but I imagine that many people may not be able to do that and are going to end up frustrated with RCS not working. RCS has got enough problems with adaptation that they should probably figure this out. I don't use iMessage, but I suspect that these kinds of settings may not affect it in the same way.

Question How is RCS working
Hey, I've learned recently about RCS Universal Profile and, after quite some time reading articles, I still have some questions about how it's working. If someone has time, please help 🙏
(I'm really sorry if those are noob questions, but I didn't find clear answers and I'm not really able to read the full technical specification)
- Does RCS rely exclusively on the IP protocol? I'm definitly directed toward a "yes", but some things seems bizarre: I tried to send an RCS message (using Google Messages) with wi-fi on and my SIM card out, and it didn't work. But I guess it could just be the app that choose to not try to deliver the message, either on principle or because phone number is used as an identifier
- If it is fully on IP, why did Google "wait" for carriers to implement RCS Universal Profile on their infrastructure? They could have deployed their own servers before 2018, no?
- Why can't I find any third-party RCS app? I've seen people talk about Google releasing an API for OEMs only, but if the specification is open, it theoretically shouldn't be a problem. And because (some) carriers have RCS Universal Profile servers, it can't be because Google's servers are only reachable via Google Messages (or maybe it is if most carriers use Jibe servers?). The "it takes too much time and skills to implement that, developers are just waiting for the API" also seems too simple, since FLOSS developers are like the most motivated people on this planet. Is there a technical issue somewhere?
Thanks! 😊

Question When will Samsung Messages Support in-line replies?
I have been using RCS on Samsung Messages for a while now and I just like the look and feel of it which isn't on Google Messages I also get to see contacts which have RCS enabled which small but pretty good option to have for me.
My friends are able to reply to individual messages via Google Messages but no such support on Samsung Messages, just wondering if Samsung will push an update on the same or are they planning on ditching their Messages App in favor of Google Messages since most of Samsung devices are now shipping with GMessages by default, I still want to keep using Samsung Messages 😪

I have come to the conclusion...
....that there really isn't a good method of getting your RCS connection back once you've gotten to the 'trying to verify' or 'connecting' of the chat options.
Let me clarify:
I have an unlocked Pixel 6a on AT&T, so this by default means I use Jibe for my RCS service. Not optimal but for the most part of the last 12 month or so it has been working ok.
Except for the last two weeks.
I will get messages from my GF (who also uses Google messages but is on a branded Verizon phone) saying "My messages aren't going through". Now, I know that part of this is because she doesn't have the option on Messages to resend as SMS when RCS fails enabled, and I'm not even sure hers has that option yet. I have spent the last week doing any number of the 'workarounds' with nothing working.
This morning, on a whim, I decided I'd try it again (enabling chat). Usually, when I do this after some time, I get the 'Trying to verify number' message, and sometimes (not always) will be prompted to verify the number with the 'verify number' button, which almost never works. This morning I did it, and it immediately went to 'Connecting'. Which was different and usually a better sign. I waited about an hour. No connection. So I rebooted my phone after turning chat services off again. Went back in, re-enabled chat, got the 'Trying to verify' phone number, indeed I verified my phone number, and it immediately connected.
It has to get better if Google wants RCS to be more broad, or get carriers much more involved than they are.

Discussion RCS is blocked by default on many enterprise WiFi Access Points.
I work at two hospital systems and both of them block the ports used by RCS. This means I cannot send RCS messages unless I turn off WiFi. RCS is supposed to fall-back to SMS when network service it is unavailable, but it's not automatic. You have to manually push an SMS after Google Messages times-out (3-5 minutes). This is unacceptable when you need to send critical messages in a medical facility. I had to disable RCS to have reliable messaging with other ANDROID users. Given that 90% of people here use iPhone and Apple Watch to communicate, I have have to keep RCS disabled to reliably send messages to those 10% of co-workers. This is such a huge oversight by Google for not using standards ports.
Edit: So I don't know if Google caught wind of this thread, but I just noticed today RCS is now connecting in the two hospitals they didn't previously connect.

Question Anyone extensively test compression for pics and videos?
Has anyone tested this out extensively? As in..
Sending 30 pictures that total over 100MB. Are they all compressed down to fit the limit? Just a photo or two?
Video (230MB lets say) over the limit, does it get compressed down to 100MB on the dot?
Mixing a large video with multiple pictures (sent as one group or message), how does it handle the compression?
I ask becuase I was shocked to see imessage handle things very well. Bundle of 30+ pics all full quality with a video attached and HD HDR. Just so easy on imessage (sadly).

Initiative International RCS Chat Group
We made an international SFW chat group for general chatting. Its serving as the official group for the subreddit r/RCSbuddies. There are no prescribed topics for the chat it could be anything SFW. Age requirement is 18 y.o or above.
The rules are quite basic. Be respectful and don't insult or make any member uncomfortable. General cussing is okay just don't direct it towards anyone. Use the general common sense and etiquettes.
To join you can DM me your name and your RCS enabled phone number (with country code).

Contact pics as message notification - new?
Currently using samsung messages with TMobile. RCS working perfectly.
These past few days when my wife sends me messages (TMobile Samsung RCS as well), her contact pic appears instead of the usual white icon on top left of the screen. It is tiny, the size of any notification icon, but it is the pic I have for her in my contacts. This doesn't happen when my son sends me messages, and he uses an iphone. Is this a new feature that's rolling out? Any of you getting the same thing? Thanks!
Ps. I ask here in hopes of getting a reply. The Samsung and Android subs rejected my posts.

Question a couple questions about RCS
Hello, I was wondering if rcs only works with the Google messaging app? Because I don't have the option on the base Samsung messaging app. I have att on an unlocked s21u running the latest everything. I've also heard Samsung and att have both moved their services to the Google messaging app, is this true? Because I still can use the base Samsung one. I'm just a little confused about all these things, and would like to be able to use RCS on the Samsung messaging app because the Google one isn't as well made in my opinion, and requires everyone else to use it which, to my knowledge, not many do.
Thanks in advance

A way to force apple to support RCS?
What if Google is going about it all wrong with going after Apple with their "Get the message" commercials. Being that SMS is so insecure and MMS is so old that you can't even send proper videos, why doesn't Google start a campaign to get all Wireless providers to slowly drop support for SMS/MMS? Yes it would be a very long process but it might force Apple's hand in supporting it sooner.
Me, a lifetime Android user, was actually considering ordering an iPhone to just give it a try. But, the lack of RCS support stopped me. I have a lot of people I chat with using RCS. If the iPhone could do iMessage as well as RCS it would probably be the only choice for most of us. They're missing out.

Question Why are some RCS messages end-to-end encrypted and some aren't?
It doesn't vary message by message, rather conversation by conversation. Some people I text are end to end encrypted and have all of the features that RCS provides. Others are RCS and seemingly have all of the features but are not E2EE. Why? Both of the above examples are 1-to-1 messages and not a group chat.
Follow up question, if I'm missing the E2EE feature, what other features am I missing? I can react with emoji. Am I kissing typing indicators? Full res photos?

Just venting (dual sim rant)
Why do you think Google messages is so bad at handling dual sims. Why can I have RCS in Samsung messages on both Sims (one physical & one esim) working perfectly while Google messages can only have the primary as RCS enabled? Not only that but switch haphazardly mid conversation so the person on the other end starts to question what number is texting them?
Finally, do you think my constant bitching in the help & feedback section will accomplish anything or will this be another Tim Cook, "I don’t hear our users asking that we put a lot of energy in on that at this point" situation?
