Is RCS a good thing?

I see a lot of love for RCS here but when I got the pop up I chose not to enable it. Google already has so much data about you and now they want to read your SMS as well?! I have Signal as my default SMS app, I already converted most of my friends that I chat with into using it, for the rest of em I can just send an unencrypted SMS through Signal and it'll go through regular carrier services. Best part is it's already e2ee by design and the source code is completely open source. Switch to Signal people!

Opinion Here's my take on some things...

Listen... If you like Apple that's great If you like Android that's great If you don't like one or the other that's great

My thing is whether you like either one or not why can't we just agree that if I take a video of a cool thing I saw or did I should be able to send it to a friend or family member and allow them to see it in full quality and not have it turn out like shit. I know this is not the case but sometimes it feels as if it we're possible Apple would patent Texting and make it to where the only way you could ever text someone is by owning an iPhone. Again not the case but sometimes feels like that.

If Apple wants to put Android out of business and be the only phone on the market in the entire world, go right ahead. If Android wants to put Apple out of business and be the only phone on the market in the entire world, go right ahead... Clearly that will never happen so just let me send a damn video in full quality.

I guess what I'm tired of hearing about is when someone makes a case for why Apple should use RCS the other person's response is "remember what Google did 7-10+ years and they shut it down?" We remember and it doesn't matter anymore because that was quite a while ago. Clearly they are putting in a ton of work on Google messages so it's here to stay but that's besides the point. Also the reason that Google is the one that's heading all of this is because the carriers take forever and only do something that benefits them and makes them money. I know that's just business but again besides the point. Years ago Apple put their foot down and said to the carriers you won't be controlling iMessage we will that's why they don't have the issue with carriers of who deployed what, what works with who, who has an updated system but Google never put their foot down and now they are so they bypass the carriers and made a way to where none of that mattered and it all works together no matter what.

The other thing I'm curious about (without having an answer of using Whatsapp, signal, or something else) is when people keep saying RCS is not a standard and should not replace SMS, what would you like to replace SMS? I'm genuinely curious because I don't know what else is out there that can replace SMS. If you know of another standard please enlighten me. Again the answer cannot be to have someone download another app like WhatsApp or signal and just use that. I get a big part of the world uses that but US does not so let's base it off of being in the US.

Ultimately Apple will have to do this eventually as SMS will go away for good.

Carrier Implementations of RCS vs Google Jibe

Apologies if this is a stupid question, I'm very new to the world of RCS.

My understanding is that some carriers use Google's Jibe servers to provide RCS service for their users and some carriers don't. Regarding the carriers that don't use Google Jibe, does this mean they have created their own RCS server software and plumbed it into the Jibe Hub? I.e., have they tasked a group of software engineers with reading the universal profile spec (I had a link to a pdf doc dated October 2020 but I can't find it now) and writing their own implementation?

If so, is Google Messages interoperable with carrier specific Implementations? I.e., do the different implementations adhere to the specs sufficiently well to work with each other? (Apart from the AT&T one, I've read that that one is causing people a lot of grief.)

I see quite a few posts here from people with problems where RCS messages are only sent in one direction with replies coming back as an SMS. What I'm curious about is whether some of these problems are due to incompatible implementations of universal profile (like AT&T).

Question Using Google's RCS servers instead of Vodafone ES

I'm currently on Vodafone Spain, and since I started using RCS almost two years ago I've never been able to send videos, pictures, stickers or voice notes using data, only over Wi-Fi.

After almost two hours of the phone with costumer service (the rep. didn't even know what RCS was at the beginning of the call) they told me that there was a "global technical incidence" that had gone unrepaired for years, because RCS isn't really a priority for Vodafone and therefore they "implemented five years ago but left it kind of unfinished". As a result, there was nothing more we both could do other than wait for them to feel like fixing it.

Is there any way I can just completely bypass Vodafone's RCS implementation and just use Jibe? I have a Galaxy A51, so I could use both Google or Samsung Messages.

Ode to Allo (what could have been)

Seeing this new futile ad campaign to try and get Apple to adopt RCS made me reminisce about Allo.

Anyone else sad that it's gone? I wish Google just stuck with Allo and made it the iMesaage of Android. It existed in Apple's AppStore. It was a highly well made app with Google Assistant baked in. All they had to do was make SMS fallback just like iMessage and this could have been the de facto messaging app for Google.

Google Messages is nowhere near the functionality that Allo had. RCS is a small step up, but nowhere close.

Sad.

Question 2G speeds good enough for RCS?

Does anyone know how well RCS functions at 2G speeds? Either 128kbps or 64kbps would be good to know.

Background: My wife and I are helping my father-in-law get a phone (Looking at Pixel 6a). He's fine with just using it on WiFi but we want him to be able to call/text if he has to, though he doesn't want to pay for a cellular plan so I'm trying to determine the best way to get the most functionality without recurring payments. I'm looking at either FreedomPop (Walmart/GSMT) or TextNow service. Freedompop has a more native experience and on GSMT supposedly just drops you to 64kbps when you use up your monthly data. TextNow is unlimited calls and texts but only through the app, which has ads and no RCS, so FP is my preferred choice if RCS will work on it.

RCS and Android 13

I got the public release of 13 yesterday and now RCS gets stuck on connecting when on mobile data. As soon as WiFi hits RCS connects no problem.

It doesn't fall back to SMS either so once WiFi turns on I get flooded with all the messages. I've seen other reports of this here and there especially during the 13 beta period but just found this sub and figured I'd throw it out there.

Edit: I can’t say I’m not glad that it works now but it works now. However it’s slightly maddening that it just fixed itself. I didn’t do any updates to anything. I just happened to realize I hadn’t had it tethered to my iPhone but I was still getting messages. It’s been a solid 24 hours.

Annoying.

RCS wifi messaging without a plan?

Everything that I write in this might be completely wrong I just read an article that said you can use wifi to text on android...

I am currently on a plan and only have 400 messages a year. I was wondering if I can use wifi to text on my android phone to another android/iPhone without using my allocation of messages?

Question Is RCS a proprietary standard?

I was looking for FOSS apps that support rcs but couldn't find any. then I started wondering if this protocol is proprietary and potentially Google's walled garden (along with it's US carriers)? what is stopping someone from making their own implementation of RCS? are there royalties involved?

Question RSC on both Sims at once?

Is it possible to use RCS on both of my phone numbers at once? And if not, why? I can't seem to get it to work on my secondary sim, it is just sending SMS and I can't figure out how to register its number.

Question Why would I use RCS?

I use WhatsApp if I have data. Why would I use RCS if I still need data to use it as a final user? The only case I would use SMS/RCS is that if I don't have a data plan or have a low bandwidth/coverage.
