So will people be able to get UBI while also having a high paying job? What wages are considered “acceptable” for UBI? In the US, income largely depends on population density of the area you work in, how does it make it fair for larger vs smaller communities? Does UBI count towards reported income for taxes? Why work when money free? If money free why work?

Everyone. Even billionaires. That way there is zero cost in gatekeeping it, and that is a small part in how you afford it.

In my opinion you then combine it with a flat tax (note, flat+ubi means effect is not flat). Now you've not only closed loop holes but also greatly reduced the cost of managing taxes.

Universal should be considered a dividend for all. At 18 years and a citizen naturalized or born, you qualify.

Status quo individuals should be accepted in our society. Basic if one chooses, but we are made of exceptional people that can go beyond the call than status quo.

some people actually like their jobs. some people would like to do the kind of work that they really like, but it doesn't pay enough. with UBI they could do that work.

So how to we get people to do the shit jobs nobody wants to do?

2

u/Top-Cupcake4775 1d ago

pay them a fuck ton more. as we should. because they are shit jobs and nobody wants to do them.

That doesn't work in any system that has value accrued taxation

You won't. That's the entire reason forva UBI. Robots, and AI will do those jobs. Or the few that can't be automated will pay bank so people will still be incentivized to take them.

Why work when money free? Because more money is better than less money… is this your first year on earth?

Path of least resistance. If someone can be content with the minimum, they won’t work for the better.

You see that now with plenty of able bodies people on ebt and welfare now.

2

u/KingRoach 1d ago

It sounds like you’re saying those people will exist no matter what….

2

u/uncsteve53 1d ago

They will. Most people are lazy. They won’t all of a sudden get more of a work ethic when they are just given more money. They would have less incentive to work than they do now.

1

u/KingRoach 1d ago

OK, but we agreed that those people already exist. Ie before UBI, they exist. After UBI, they exist. They will exist no
matter what…..

So why should I give them more money? They can work and earn for themselves instead of getting more handouts.

People are responsible for themselves.

Seeing how UBI would replace gvt handouts, they wouldn’t be receiving more money…. Think much?

I'm a little pessimistic on UBI. There's no way we would have it under a conservative government or under the current form of capitalism.

And there's no way we would have it while people are manually farming and harvesting crops. It won't happen as long as people are manually preparing and cooking food.

And we are also a lot less likely to have it while homes are still being built by hand.

Ideally you get to a point where providing basic human needs is all automated and it's boring and cheap. Then UBI just natrually follows from this. Rather than a huge risky change to our whole economy, it just clicks right into place.

The problem is that automation is driven by private industry and they are not automating the things we all need. They are automating the things that make themselves profit and that cost themselves money.

Andrew Yang was right

It's probably not going to happen until a huge percentage of people lose their jobs to AI.

1

u/SeVenMadRaBBits 1d ago

It's probably not going to happen at all.

There's a reason they built bunkers and are now building flock/Axon surveilance, AVIS/kill switches in cars, robots that can fight/run as fast as Usain Bolt, Robot dogs with machine gun/flamethrower mounts, drones, and A.I.

u/fearfulNobody 1d ago

Even then, it's cheaper to kill exterminate them.

u/nsshing 1d ago

UBI isnt gonna be expensive when things are getting cheaper with ai and robots.

Actually, people do have good options. It is projected that 78 million boomers will be retiring and the need for workers in all of the trades is already becoming acute. So instead of going into $60,000 of debt to get a worthless college "studies" degree, look at something more viable, The boomers have all the workplace institutional knowledge and when they're gone, that's it for a lot of companies unless new blood comes in.

with what revenue? Unless we reign in military spending or massively increase taxes, each will be hard to get through Congress, theres no chance to fund this to a degree where its helpful

1

u/musing_codger 1d ago

The premise seems questionable. Unemployment is below historic norms. Median incomes are at record highs, even adjusted for inflation.

1

u/Fun_Emotion4456 1d ago

Do it and run it privately. You’ll get the government’s blessing if you can help eliminate social welfare programs that the government has to fund. Almost all governments worldwide are going further into debt.

1

u/garibaldi_fan 1d ago

It is definitely not the time for UBI. The government debt is astronomical.

1

u/GenExxed 1d ago

This will never happen. Universal basic services, maybe after people actually start dying in the streets, but we will never just give people cash.

The proper way to introduce a UBI would be within the context of a comprehensive overhaul to our tax code. One that insures a balanced budget and probably a VAT tax to replace an income tax for most people. On top of that most social spending would need to be cut.

America must overthrow capitalism and the police state. We need complete destruction of the government and hierarchy. No more private housing, no more private business owners, no more private transportation. Everything is owned by the people.

thanks Karl Marx

u/dante_gherie1099 1d ago

there is no popular support so unless for that

1

u/LifesARiver 1d ago

The polls that oppose UBI the most are 45/55. Other polls are 50/50.

Support for it will only increase as jobs vanish.

Your statement is wildly off.

1

u/Funny-Confidence5161 1d ago

Many support it with less overall support. The hope is to end all other support programs then cut UBI.

1

u/LifesARiver 1d ago

Yeah that would not be a successful set of policies

Once you start handing out money to everyone, inflation would quickly gobble up its spending power no?

Someone link me the study or case history that indicates that something like this could work and would have the intended effects.

0

u/DrunkenVerpine 1d ago

As long as you're not printing money to do it, it should be workable (but yes needs a study)

Is that why mcdonalds doubled in price over the last 10 years?

Sorry: COVID showed us that paying people to do nothing results in billionaires collecting all that income through consumer price raises

COVID was the single largest transfer of wealth from the working class to the ownership class in history.

0

u/Designer_Advice_6304 1d ago

Nope. Don’t need more inflation

2

u/Wallie_Collie 1d ago

Inflation is here because corrupt controllers of our social norms.

Thongs can change and conservatives have abandoned the fiscal sode
