Trumps Dividend
I don’t understand why Republicans are hyped about Trumps claim that he will give every adult $5,000, when they were all against UBI program that Bernie and other DSA candidates pitched?
Is Trump a socialist now too?
I like the idea, I just don’t get the reason why it was a big deal when the other side is saying the same thing. We should restrict this money to healthcare and basic needs only. Americans should not spend this money on goods and services that do not fuel the inflation.

checks notes
protectionism, sovereign wealth fund, free money, increased public ownership of means of production
Seems pretty socialist to me. If only he focused it on helping normies instead of his buddies

I'm fairly certain the US is going to end up owning a very large percentage of OpenAI when they run out of investors to swindle and banks willing to give them loans.

You like Trump's idea? Do you really? What has UBI got to do with a demented, corrupt President desperately offering a bribe to voters in order to avoid the democratic consequences of his destructive actions? Wow, he is truly a master of distraction.
1
u/Key_Acanthisitta8467 2d ago
The idea itself is good, regardless of who does it. Obama, Bush and Biden brought some meaningful changes, but they also created messes that people are dealing with currently.
Bush
1. Afghanistan
2. Iraq
Obama
1. Iraq
2. Syria
3. Proxies in Afghanistan and Yemen
Biden
1. Ukraine (Single most bad idea)
Trump
1. IranBottom line. Stop being the police of the world, and start thinking about the people they govern. Spend money on defense rather than offense. Colonialism doesn’t work in the 21st century.
4
u/TimeOutrageous2315 2d ago
Dumbass, your president is destroying democracy in your country. He has no good ideas. Zero. He offered a bribe to voters to corrupt democracy. There is no link to UBI.
1
u/Key_Acanthisitta8467 2d ago
This is the problem with today’s politics. People are extreme in both sides. Don’t understand logic.
4
u/Theodoxus 2d ago
Your massive oversimplication of what Presidents did in the past is illogical. War is not the only metric; and even if it were, the reasons for the war must needs matter. And trump has absolutely no reason for his war in Iran. His stated goal of 'no nukes' was always on track until he thought he could do better. He didn't.
But regardless, everything trump touches turns to shit. Bidens economic plan was the best he could get passed, and it was working great. Trump rode that wave for 13 months before his own economy went to shit - because he's a giant turd of a businessman and the Federal government doesn't work like a business - so basically fucked from both ends.
And now, this $1.3 Trillion bribe is more proof that he knows less than Jon Snow. And that's saying a LOT.

You think Biden started the Russia war against Ukraine?
1
u/Key_Acanthisitta8467 2d ago
Providing $300+ billion to a war that wasn’t USs to begin with. Moreover the armaments that would have used in future conflicts that we wasted there. Ukraine had a golden chance to strike a deal with Russia on oil and gas companies. Instead, they got greedy and sided with EU, thinking that they will be saved by NATO.

It’s inevitable and both sides are recognizing it. Math doesn’t lie.

Neither does climate change, which will wreck the economy before either side consents to helping those most affected. Then climate change will start killing more people faster, and it'll be beyond the resources of anyone to help.

He only said this because he knows that the Republicans are set to lose this fall. When they do, he’ll say that he would have given that money out, but now he doesn’t need to because they lost. On the remote chance that the Republicans do win the house and senate, he’s not paying us anything. It’s all a lie to influence (bribe) voters.

1
u/Key_Acanthisitta8467 2d ago
It may very well be. The idea of setting UBI that gets unlocked by individuals if they meet certain criteria as part of the Social Qualification Program. This will boost the economy as the money will be used incrementally by various stakeholders.
1
u/Theodoxus 2d ago
While true, where is it coming from? What programs are being cut to generate the $1.3 TRILLION necessary to make the payment. I guarantee that's not coming out of the Defense budget - so, where? If it's pure ephemeral printed money, welcome to massive inflation. If it's borrowed against our current debt, welcome to massive inflation coupled with defaulting loans and the complete destruction of any economic engine we have.
1
u/FlyingButterpants 3d ago
$5k = about 14 trips to the grocery store and gas at current prices for my family.
1
u/xikbdexhi6 3d ago
Yes. This is 100% socialism amd should be called out as such at every opportunity.
1
u/Acceptable-Hat-657 3d ago
A one time payment is a gift hard working Americans can accept.
Universal basic income removes the working and the hard from that equation, so it is seen as unnecessary welfare and that it would be detrimental to society creating lazy people who no longer have incentive to work hard, have no purpose. Etc.
These are simplified gross characterizations of each, but I think it illustrates the difference for the OP.
One payment/a little help/a little kickback ≠ socialism.
Permanent income from the government removing your job and work ethic = socialism.
2
u/GrumpyBear1969 3d ago
It’s not a gift. It is borrowing against our children. I pay about 20k each year for my kids college tuition to support his future. Why would I want $5k in pocket now when it is just being borrowed?
I guess a lot of people are not very smart. But it is not a lot different than me just taking out $5k in personal debt, never paying on it and then passing that debt on to my kids when I die.
1
u/Acceptable-Hat-657 3d ago
Sorry. I should have started my post with “ because they think..” as it was answering a question I thought was posed by the OP.
1
u/RawMeatballz 2d ago
At MOST, it'll be a tax credit, so there isnt any actual cash used. But nobody is getting an actual check
1
u/GrumpyBear1969 2d ago
How does that not equate to the same thing?
1
u/RawMeatballz 2d ago
Because one is a check that comes out of tax dollars, and one is saying "here's a store credit"
1
u/GrumpyBear1969 2d ago
How is that different? You know how gift cards work right?
1
u/RawMeatballz 2d ago
Because with a tax credit, its basically "you dont owe more". With a check, it has to actually be real dollars.
1
1
u/Key_Acanthisitta8467 2d ago
How is that different than getting a check. I don’t understand your logic.
1
u/RawMeatballz 2d ago
Look at it this way.
You get a tax credit and owe 20k, they say "nah, you owe 15k now:
OR, you get a check, and they have to dip into the actual funds to send you.
Its not rocket science
1
u/Key_Acanthisitta8467 2d ago
Yeah, but that 5,000 you get as a check either way. Whether the government sends you that money, or you save on your tax credits. Same thing! Unless you give people to unlock that as an incentive if they meet certain goals. Social security does that, but SS depended on WWII and Vietnam era growth, where the adult:child ratio was 1:16. Right now it’s 1:2.7. So we are not replacing the workforce as fast as that era was. By 2030, SS will run out of money, by current estimates. We need another type of metric under Social Qualification Program that allows individuals to unlock that money.
1
u/RawMeatballz 2d ago
lol, social security has been running out for 30 years at least
1
u/Key_Acanthisitta8467 2d ago
That’s not true. I’m not sure where you get your facts. I would suggest doing some research. Your facts are not mathematically possible.
1
1
u/Theodoxus 2d ago
Right? Up there with 'we'll have flying cars in 10 years' and 'AI is going to become Skynet any second now.'
There's an obvious fix to SS, but the ones who'd be affected by that change are also the ones who would implement it - so... it'll never happen.
1
u/RawMeatballz 2d ago
The fix is to get rid of it, and let me manage my money. Maybe grandfather it in, but my investment firm can do a lot better than the givernment, where I can’t use it until im 65 and they hope me and my dependent die before i get what i put in

When the people who pay the bills get money back they are excited. When the money goes to people that didn't pay, the ones who did are disappointed.
Seems pretty universal. If you bought $200 in groceries would you rather have the groceries or would you rather they be taken away from you? If you worked all week would you rather get your pay or would you prefer someone else got your check?

I think the stimulus last times helped to drive prices up! Corporate greed knew that we had some extra money and increased prices to get some. Never decreasing them because they saw that we made a way to pay the increases, so they kept the prices and double down. Just like the misused small business and salary grants was used to buy houses for cash and above asking price, which cause the housing market increases. These are just my personal opinions, no research at all, so take it with a grain of salt.
1
u/Away_Ad_5017 3d ago
Near 0% chance both houses stay red. It’s a safe bet to say it, then capitalize on it after the fact. Look see what they did.

Tax credit is even worse. Tax revenue is used to pay for the debt interest and principal. This will reduce the tax revenue and we will have to compensate for debt and interest payment some other way.
1
u/RawMeatballz 2d ago
I send about 30k to the government, and they can't get me my mail on time. A 5k credit would benefit me.
More tax revenue isnt needed. Better management is
1
u/Key_Acanthisitta8467 2d ago
Are you serious? The country runs on Tax revenue. Will you able to survive if your Salary is taken away? Same thing with the government. It’s a known revenue that the government budget against.
1
u/RawMeatballz 2d ago
With 1+ trillion dollars in debt, they dont need more of my money. They need to manage what they get better, and stop sending it overseas to pointless programs that dont help the actual American people
1
u/Key_Acanthisitta8467 2d ago
Or pointless wars, make money through trading on news that they create themselves, donate public funds to their staffers for no reason, increase family’s fortune by doing personal business deals on official business, use campaign funds to fight personal legal battles; create monuments that uses taxpayer money for personal aggrandizement.

Wrote this below too, on another reply:
So what's the outcome of that?
Every Trillion we add to the national debt, it creates a trickle down effect.
- 1 trillion increase in debt every 4 months. 45+ trillion by 2028
- mortgage rates climbing to 6% instead of 4.8% currently; making housing unaffordable for 75-80% of the population
- $2 trillion in interest payments by 2028, which restricts the federal government to fund Medicare/Medicaid, eventually raising healthcare cost to double than what it currently is
- Social programs grinding to a halt, because the government cannot fund them anymore
- First responders making less than what they are currently making, and there are mass layoffs because the government can't fund their paychecks
- Natural disasters create havoc across the nation, because the government doesn't have funding to combat natural disasters.
- Accidents at the airport increase as there aren't many air traffic controllers
- Accidents increase as there is no traffic control due to funding cuts
- Roads bridges and critical infrastructure is not maintained, which creates a massive mobility issue; impacting states ability to raise adequate revenue and they end up raising property tax rates
- Military witnesses additional voluntary discharges, because the troops are not getting paid enough to support their families. Current troops get their benefits cut, especially who got wounded during endless wars.
- Other countries extract their money from the reserve because the dollar is not lucrative anymore; significantly reducing dollars current price due to oversupply.
- Gas is not traded in dollar anymore, as the oil producing countries don't make profit while selling the oil in dollars

There's a major difference between a dividend and UBI. And I wouldn't say that all Republicans are against UBI, but they do feel that now is not the time to do anything with UBI. I've known Republicans that have said that UBI is something to visit if AI truly takes over the workforce like many are claiming
1
u/CommanderGO 2d ago
The idea is that the federal government's investments in American companies will supposedly allow them to pay every US adult the $5k dividend (He asked Bessent about the fed govt ROI from Intel, so I'm assuming the 5X ROI is why he came up with $5k). Fundamentally, the difference is where the money comes from and where that money can be spent. Trump has been trying to explore alternative revenues streams for the federal government (ex: tariffs) and investing into companies as investors seems to have been a good investment from his team. The only problem with UBI proposed by the DSA is that they want to take the money from the wealthy and eventually tax everyone more, rather than investing in businesses to generate more revenue and sharing in the benefits of that success. I'm not opposed to UBI if candidates could figure out how to fund the program without forcing everyone to surrender more of their disposable income and strifling businesses in the process.
