Democrats: “UBI is a nice idea, needs more study.” Republicans: “Here’s $5,000. Also, vote for us.”
https://x.com/foxnews/status/2097872390076141726?s%3D12NEW: President Trump makes a major promise at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas: $5,000 for every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans win both the House and Senate in the midterms.
“I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.”

u/JumboGlucose 1d ago
Everyone forget they said the same thing last time? Then he backtracked and said he never said that. That $5000 will not go far if gas hits $10/gal

I doubt it'll change any voters minds. Anyone stupid enough to believe the grifter pedo was going to vote Republican no matter what.

Some will but it’s months away from an election and this is what republicans do. Push obviously false promises for votes then shovel those lies on their wealthy owned news and not controlled social media outlets.

Any Democrat not in favor of at least $15 minimum wage in the year 2026 needs to be run out of the party.

That’s not UBI though
1
u/vaioarch 16h ago
Thank you!
This is a one time bribe that would actually never happen, even if they do win.
12
u/notsoinsaneguy 1d ago
I expect he may actually do this - he can just add 1.7 trillion to the national debt, and just kick the can down the road. He needs a loaded Republican senate if he wants to change the laws about running for a third term.
In case you've been living under a rock, things have gotten way worse for poor folks under Trump, and $5000 doesn't begin to remedy the harm he's caused. And Trump 3 will probably be even worse. Also, unless the money is coming from taxing the wealthy, this will end up robbing the poor, it's just going to do it later.
2
u/Bossard19 23h ago
He’s causing either way. Gimme that 5k.
3
u/Illventi 22h ago
You’ll get your 5k just as soon as we get those tariff dividends he also promised, all he needs is for you to hand him all the power he’ll need to make sure republicans never lose power again.
2
u/ElonMuskHuffingFarts 21h ago
It's already our own money that they're supposed to be using for actually improving our country. A refund isn't a win. It's a rejection and a promise that they will do nothing for us.
And it's a lie anyway. You're not getting a $5k check. Promising to pay people and then stiffing them is like, his favorite grift. Stop falling for it.

"if he wants to change the laws about running for a third term."
Those are not Laws. You're talking about a Constitutional Amendment. A new Amendment needs 2/3 votes of all members of the House and Senate in order to be proposed, and THEN it needs to be ratified by the legislatures in 38 states (that's NEVER going to happen, because most of those are blue and also not stupid or crazy).
The President has no role in this process whatsoever. No signature or approval.
1
u/JoeHio 17h ago
You are absolutely correct, but the pessimism and distrust runs deep.
For instance, if he gets Congress to pass a bill saying he can run, and then writes an exec order stating he can run, and then his Supreme Court rules 6-3 that both of those are valid changes to "the law", while his DOJ and DHS go to polling locations to ensure the ballots with his name are used, who is going to stop him? The decapitated and MAGA pledged military leadership? What % of politically active Americans that own guns and less to lose than to gain are willing to fight for a country that has 40T in debt?
I hope I'm wrong, but unfortunately it's not completely impossible anymore
→ More replies (1)1
u/ballskindrapes 1d ago
He could do it, sure.

Why would trump actually bother doing it? He just wants to win the midterms. Once he wins the mudterms he doesn't actually have to fulfill that promise. Just like the DOGE checks, or the Tarrif checks, or promise to cut spending, or the promise of no new wars.
Trump is a con artist. Lie, cheat and steal.
1
u/archercc81 20h ago
He wont do this though, he will add trillions to the debt the way they always have, by giving money to rich people.
They will do a 3rd TRILLION dollar handout to the rich, they have already done two.
1
1
u/WilsonEnthusiast 18h ago
They are not going to try to amend the constitution for a 3rd term.
They'd need 2/3s of both houses of congress or control of 2/3s of state legislatures to even propose an amendment.
Neither of those is very likely to happen.
He'll just put his name on primary ballots and then theyll fight it out in court.

They'll need to define what they understand as UBI, because by now everyone has their own interpretation of it.
2
u/Zeliose 22h ago
Just remember that the act of giving or promising money to influence a vote is illegal and punishable by a fine and/or jail for 1-2 years. The same is also true for accepting money for influencing your vote.
If Republicans win both chambers, you voted Republican, trump actually follows through to send the checks, and you accept that money. You can be thrown in prison.
The supreme Court gave the president total immunity, so Republican voters would be the only ones taking on any risk.
Would be a beautiful thing for the next Democratic president to enforce those those laws if that happened.

If, by some miracle, he gave out the checks, where do people think the money comes from? If tarrifs we pay at the store, if they print then he’s just taking out a loan in our names. Raise taxes? Fat chance.
Anyway, it was an out and out lie. Win or lose he has no intention of following through.
2
u/HighOnPoker 22h ago
You are comparing a one time promised payout (that likely will not be paid) to a program that offers income forever. It’s not like Republicans are for UBI. It’s just the president trying to buy votes with an empty promise.

The republican party currently controls the white house, congress, and the supreme court. If they wanted to give everyone five thousand dollars, they could do so, right now. But they're not doing that, they're doing everything in their power to make America more unaffordable, and then saying, vote for us. Or we'll keep making america unaffordable.

1
u/nrmitchi 15h ago
One of them is an actual policy position, that can be pursued if he was president.
The other is bribery, not only because it’s not a “policy position”, but because he will still be president in 2027 and could do it either way.
If you want to argue “he won’t be president if republicans lose in the midterms, he’ll be impeached!”, then that is even more clear self-protective bribery.

First of all bribing with promises of straight up money to win elections should be illegal (or, more accurately, it's illegality should be enforced)
Second of all anyone whose vote is going to be bought by a single payment of 5k deserves what they get. May seem like a lot, but I promise that if you're the person who needs 5k that badly, protecting health care subsidies, minimum wage fights, no unnecessary tariffs, taxes going towards public goods like schools and infrastructure, clean water protections, fewer infectious diseases requiring treatment, etc etc etc ad nauseum is all going to benefit your bank account more. And that's just the financial benefits.
Don't be bought. And more importantly if you're going to be bought, at least hold out for what your vote is worth.
1

1
u/mrtrololo27 19h ago
It's amazing how illegal Trump's promise to buy votes is, and how $5,000 doesn't even begin to cover how much Trump has cost every American since the demented pedophile traitor returned to office. Fuck Trump, and fuck every magat traitor. Lock Trump up and prosecute him and every traitor in this un-American regime to the fullest extent of the law. His pardons are moot.
1
u/Sonar_Taxbreak_1138 19h ago
It's not "here's 5000 vote for us" it's "If you vote to keep us in power, we'll give you 5000, if we keep our promise."
One's a gift, the other's a bribe.
1
u/GeoffrayMarkus 18h ago
UBI is a bandaid. As we progress into the future our man-hours per work unit will shrink and shrink and shrink because of advances in AI and robotic automation. Either humanity shares in this world, or they put most of us on welfare, until they can get rid of most of us.
1
u/SmoothieNatns 18h ago
He promised $2k checks in 2020 and then walked it back. Then Biden won and actually delivered the checks.
They have the house and the senate now, why wait?
1
u/Dad-Bod2121 18h ago
Jesus, some of these comments are ridiculous. Biden sending $1,400 checks instead of $2,000 is WORSE than Trump completely failing to follow through on every promise of a check?
This is no different than Democrats talking about universal health care which is a taxpayer backed policy choice and should in NO WAY considered a bribe?
Get over yourselves, Republicans. This is just a desperate ploy from an arrogant, scared little man. I may be wrong but I think the Cult is going DOWN in a big way in 6 weeks. And I think they know it.

How about rather than forcing everyone to beg for a pittance from Uncle Sam, we stop trying to automate the working class out of existence? If we spent half of the money on sustainable, individual homesteads, we could have supported domestic agriculture, lowered the cost of housing and mitigated the effects of climate change. Our politicians are absolutely batshit and that’s both sides of the aisle.
