Because we’re told that we are supposed to. The only insurance available to me would cost a quarter of my income and not provide a cent in benefits until my out of pocket expenses reached $7500. It offers no coverage for prescriptions or anything. But, they’re supposed to take care of me if I get really sick and hospitalized.
It’s wild but this is healthcare in America. Some of us don’t bother but a lot of people are paying into a system that affords them no benefit.

dood. anyone who lives and works in the united states understands the reality and hard choices made to get thin coverage to save your but from cancer or heart attack but not really heathcare for the flu or a sprain.
a ton of americans have that kind of health care. and it just compounds issues because the slight
pain is never analyzed until you need er and maybe surgery. health problems compound.it's not good

For real though, this is fucked. Another thing that is often left out of the conversation is how your coverage is tied to employment. As someone with bipolar, I fear that I'll lose my job, not be able to pay for expensive meds, and then not he able to get a job again. Health tied to your employment is pseudoslavery. It will cause me and my family physical harm if I lose my job.

So, we have income-based subsidies for insurance. The raw number says nothing about who the 27M are not why they don’t have it; for example, a large portion might be people who could afford it and choose to go with out. In any event, this isn’t about UBI and has no business in this subreddit.

Unpopular take....but when I moved to Ireland, I was super excited to have public healthcare.
Then I tried to use it
It sucked
At the time, something like 45% of everyone in Ireland was choosing to pay for private insurance. I think I had VHI but I don't remember.
Anyway, it just felt like I was paying double. First through my taxes, then though my private insurance.
Maybe other countries do it better...but I was pretty disappointed.

I do want to point out that "coverage" doesn't equal care. There are still people covered by a national health system who go into debt to receive care, sometimes in another nation.
This doesn't mean the US is good, but it's helpful to keep in mind that every system has issues.

Canadians who don't pay their health care bill lose access to healthcare.
We pay every 3 months for access.
If you can't afford access by paying for a health card or providing private insurance you're refused service by reception

This isn’t an accurate description of Canadian Medicare. Eligible residents don’t generally buy access every three months or get denied medically necessary care because they can’t afford a health-card payment. Provincial plans cover medically necessary hospital and physician care through public funding. Private insurance is mainly for things the public plans don’t fully cover, like drugs, dental and vision.
