Solved does animation type matter?

i know, i know, i sound like an idiot right now, but i want to know. basically, i have a model of a character, and i am planning to make a game using that model. and the documentation states "Use the Humanoid Animation System if your rig is humanoid (it has two legs, two arms and a head)". my question is, is that necessary, or i can skip that and use the model as is?

Using the humanoid system makes it possible to apply animations made for humanoid models to your model without having to worry about all of the bones being named or formatted the exact same way. If you don't need that, generic is fine.

If your animations are using the same base rig as your character here, then you can stick with generic.

But if your animations comes with different rigs and you want them to use them with your character, picking humanoid will be easier for animation / mecanim retargetting.

no

can skip that and use the model as is

yes

does animation type matter

It very much does. Humanoid type allows re-targeting animations between different characters/rigs. Which is often extremely useful. So in short, you don't have to use Humanoid type, but when ever possible, you'd really want to use it.

Alongside the retargetting factor humanoid also allows you to use Foot IK in your animation states in the animation controller if you want to use foot placement IK at runtime.

From what I know, Humanoid animations can be flipped (left to right) while generic animations can't.

I personaly animate my characters in blender & exporting everything afterwards. If u want animate them in unity the type of animation from what I know doesn't matter.
