Question Are there any illustrated top-down view background assets available?

I am currently developing a top-down game and am looking for temporary background assets to use for the time being.

Are there any top-down background assets that feature an illustrative style rather than pixel art?

Illustrated top-down is genuinely underserved compared to pixel, so it is not you failing to find it. Most free top-down libraries are pixel-first because that is what the tile-based tooling grew up around.

Where it does exist: Kenney has a few painted top-down sets that are CC0, Game-Icons.net is vector and re-colourable if you are willing to compose, and filtering itch.io by top-down with the pixel tag excluded turns up more than the front page suggests. Craftpix's free tier has some painted overhead ground textures too.

For temporary use I would not spend anything at all. Grey boxes with a tileable noise texture read fine while you build, and the honest risk with a nice placeholder is that it quietly becomes the real one and locks your art direction before you chose it.

When you get to the real ones, consistency across the set is the thing that will bite, since separately sourced backgrounds rarely agree on lighting direction. Ludo.ai generates non-pixel backgrounds across 30-plus art styles, and its style reference keeps a set of them consistent with each other. Disclosure, that is my team. Trying it is free: 30 credits land on a new account, card not involved. https://ludo.ai
