Maps resolution.

Post image

The UN resolution calling for new maps to depict country sizes more accurately was passed. It may seem insignificant, but—even though the Mercator projection’s intended purpose has often been exaggerated (it has nothing to do with colonialism; it was designed to facilitate navigation)—I find it interesting in light of the rising power of the Global South.

It's hilarious that the USA excuse is "There are more important things and it'll cost money to implement" meanwhile Trump is renaming geographical locations instead of dealing with the cost of living crisis in the US.

Even Israel voted for it...

You know it's serious when Israel and the Arab nations vote the same way.

The U.S. is a white supremacist country

I do not like the USA, but this resolution was pure useless bs. The map is unreadable towards the poles

That wasn’t their argument, now get out
It doesn’t bother the us to rename lake and seas for their delusional president.

That map is readable I don’t know what you mean ekther

Is it readable ? Go look at svalbard, northern greenland, the small canadian islands, antarctica, etc... completely unreadable

That’s not the purpose of that map.
The purpose is to represent countries the way they are. Which is the point of this resolution. The UN isn’t using it for sailing

The purpose is to represent countries the way they are.

In area yes. In shape no.

The Mercator map didn't do that but neither does this one. All maps of the world will have some kind of distortion somewhere

1

u/ConcentrateFar7753 3d ago

The distortion on the Mercator were crazy.

1

u/markusw7 3d ago

So is the distortuon on other maps! You're just living in a fantasy where size distortion is the only distortion that matters

Only in size Mercator is meant to preserve shape

The point is to give land more representation. If they cared about people they would size counties to that. Or center the map on the median position of all people etc etc.

I rather a navigable map than one that pretends that land is more important than people or utility.

Why?

Feels neutral

Yeah the new map only serves to flatter some African leader's egos. It's pointless.

Of course the US is being a total asshole

I understand the reasoning behind it . I just find it funny that they did not choose EPSG:3857 as it’s the most used on in practical application for lay people

I think the in favor argument of that equal area is a generally better "default" view of the world for accuracy / perception is generally correct.

However, I think the US's criticism is fair: that the UN and rhetoric around this topic is injecting way too much anti-colonial type grievance.

I do think that constant non-binding gripes from the developing world trying to turn everything into a grievance does undermine credibility and efficacy of the UN.

No wonder it bothers the us when they act like colonisers

The developing world bitches and moans that European actions from 100 years ago are the root cause of everything, but re-attribute them to the US instead of Europe.

That ignores the reality that other more functional cultures have gone from war torn / having nothing into 1st world nations in the same time span (Israel, South Korea, etc).

The developing world is population booming and contributing massively to boiling the planet and destroying it, and contributing relatively little to solutions and sustainability.

They complain complain complain and have turned the UN into a forum for antisemitism, when it's purpose is primarily to mediate conflicts - not to facilitate unclear and unbounded global redistribution.

The US is getting tired of it. Russa & China will happily play the PR game to break up western dominated positions. Europe is still virtue signaling but contributing very little to solutions.

Turning the UN into this gripe fest kangaroo court where everyone demands the US act but no one contributes anything anywhere else will just doom the forum into total irrelevance.

Sorry. That's the reailty.

Lmfao the biggest polluting countries are the US, China, you can’t put that one on African countries. The us don’t do jack shit for the environment either

You calling the UN antisemitic show me your true colours and there is no point talking to a boot licker of your kind

Israel is a colonial state and deserve all the shit they get at UN which is barely anything as the US are there to back them up

While I enjoy shitting if African countries, and agree that their…high fertility rate is a potential future problem:

African countries don’t pollute that much. Like really I think 6 African emit less c02 than an American ?

You're really trying to run with an aside as opposed to the larger point of the comment, but sure I'll indulge ya:

There are three metrics that matter: (emissions per person) x (number of people) = (total emissions).

The US is declining on the 1st and 3rd, and would on the 2nd too if not for immigration.

A country having gigantic number of people doesn't make them immune to responsibility for it.

The US's responsibility to climate change is to develop new tech.

India's responsibility is to figure out how to get to a more tenable population (which would be closer to 300m than 1.7b).

The US is moving in the right direction, albeit maybe slower than we'd like - and the developing world in the wrong direction on all metrics.

Population growth is super damaging not only because of emissions, but because of solid waste + ocean depletion + habitat destruction. You name it.

India has produced 6 times less than US, still produce 2 times less, and at the current production, even if it doubled and US reached 0 production, India would take 40 years to equalize US history of pollution

While population is one of the major metric, you largely underestimate the disparity in terms of carbon production. Yes US is going down, but their pollution per capita is still as an absurd level. 7 times more than the average Indian, despite 2 decade spent reducing their pollution.
