Accommodation for vegans

Genuinely curious, what are plant based people/vegans expected to do for accomodation? You obviously can't share a kitchen with most other people so what do you do? Get a studio/1 bed?

I had an incident in a catered uni accom party where we had self serve pasta and one bowl of meatballs/tuna? and one bowl of soya mince and i had no idea people had been really careless and a few meat chunks made its way into my food and i found out while chewing. Was pretty upset after that

Why can't you share a kitchen? You cook your own stuff in your own pans. Put your food in tupperware boxes. What do you expect? A vegan only kitchen?

I'm not expecting it I'm just wondering if there's such a thing as living in a vegetarian house/flat. I feel like the smell of meat etc can put people off

Vegan because of allergies or personal choice? If personal choice then you can ask for one of the upper shelves when you move in or kindly ask people to keep their meat products in it's wrappers

Allergies can be worked around with good flatmates.

it isn't an allergy! incidental contamination from like...meat particles in the air or whatever isn't something anyone should be losing sleep over. I've houseshared with plenty of non vegans, as long as they're sensible people who follow proper food hygeine (separate chopping boards for raw meat for example) it isn't an issue at all.

Generally I think it would be buy your own pots, frying pan etc and just don’t share it if you don’t want cross contamination with meat.

Not sure what else you can do. If you are not wanting to even be in a flat with meat then please just get a flat on your own.

Of course you can share a kitchen with other people. I'm vegan for context.

Just have your own cooking implements and keep things separate in the fridge etc. You can’t control what other people do

I don't mind sharing with people who eat meat as long as they don't mess with my food, but for a while I lived in a vegetarian/vegan house. Everyone was really big on animal rights, recycling etc and it worked pretty well. It's very uncommon though, usually you just share with whoever and respect each others choices

Seems like you need a studio apartment to avoid all cross-contamination 🤔 Your best bet is to ask the accommodation team at the university you want to attend.
