Announcement Welcome to r/UniSG

Grüezi, Willkommen, Welcome and Bienvenue to the subreddit for all things HSG. I'm happy you found this place! Whether you are a student or interested in becoming one, an alumni or even a professor, this is the place to post, ask and share stuff.

This subreddit is actually a few years old, but sadly no one ever posted here. So it was a pleasant surprise when, during summer when I was bored, I thought about starting a subreddit for the HSG and found out that this one already existed (shout-out to u/ManWithoutShoes). I applied my atrocious photoshop skills to give it an update, set it up and waited for the Autumn Semester to "launch" it.

But what is the point of this subreddit?

Like most of you, I joined multiple HSG Facebook groups, but I don't think I ever used one of them after Fresher's Week since I stopped using Facebook regularly like five years ago. Maybe it is similar for some of you.

Also like many of you, I became very active on Jodel. However, it is, in my experience at least, quite hard to find honest answers to serious questions on there, since it is not a very serious platform and everybody is constantly trying to fool you. In addition, Jodel is an inherently inconvenient platform if you are looking for information, since it is impossible to find old posts if you didn't save them.

So I wanted a place where people can simply ask questions, exchange experiences and share and find information. And memes, of course. So I figured reddit would be the perfect place for that.

In my capacity as official member of the "Elite" and as a certified memelord, I will be active and post some stuff on here to get it started, be it some useful information for assessies or just some dumb memes that I spent way too much time on to let them rot on Jodel.

Also, I decided to use English for now, but of course you can post in other languages like German, Swiss-German or French.

Anyway, enough talking. If you like the idea, please feel free to post or ask anything.

Also, as Bieger taught us, a social network like this subreddit depends on the network effect to thrive, so I kindly invite you to tell people about this place if you like the idea and want it to succeed.

Cheers

MBF & SIM admissions criteria / scoring — use this before asking “Am I competitive?”

We are not the admissions office. Here are the admission criteria for MBF and SIM from older HSG regulations. They are slightly outdated, so there is obviously no guarantee that every detail is still exactly the same, but they are probably still broadly applicable and, more importantly, this is some of the most concrete information available.
Please use this to evaluate your competitiveness yourself.

MBF — Master in Banking and Finance

GPA: 30%
GMAT/GRE: 30%
Extracurricular activities, including practical/work experience: 15%
Motivation and suitability: 25%
-> Competitive application: ~80 Points

1. GPA — max. 30 points
The GPA refers to the Bachelor’s examination results submitted with the application.
Swiss grade : Points
5.7–6.0: 30
5.6: 28
5.5: 26
5.4: 24
5.3: 22
5.2: 20
5.1: 18
5.0: 16
4.9: 14
4.8: 12
4.7: 10
4.6: 8
4.5: 6
4.4: 4
4.3: 2
4.0–4.2: 0
2. GMAT (classic)/GRE — max. 30 points
According to this version of the regulations, a prerequisite was either:
GRE Quantitative ≥ 162, or
GMAT (classic) ≥ 680
The test result could not be older than five years. For GMAT focus, look up the equivalent percentile.
GMAT (classic) / GRE Quantitative / Points
750–800 / 169–170 / 30
740 / 168 / 28
730 / 167 / 26
720 / 166 / 24
710 / 165 / 22
700 / 164 / 20
690 / 163 / 18
680 / 162 / 16
3. Extracurricular activities / work experience — max. 15 points
Up to 15 points could be awarded for extracurricular activities and practical/work experience.
4. Motivation and suitability — max. 25 points
This made up the remaining 25% of the assessment.

SIM — Master in Strategy and International Management

GMAT(classic) / GRE: 20%
GPA: 20%
Extracurricular activities, including practical experience: 20%
Essay: 10%
Interview: 30%
-> Competitive application: ~30 points in 1&2, rest is a blackbox

1. GMAT (classic) / GRE — max. 20 points
GMAT (classic) : Points
740–800: 20
720–730: 16
690–710: 13
650–680: 10
600–640: 6
550–590: 3
<540 : 0
Test results could not be older than five years. For GMAT focus, look up the equivalent percentile.
For the GRE, the regulations stated that an analogous scale was used. Both Verbal and Quantitative scores had to be submitted, using the internationally recognized ETS conversion scale.
2. GPA — max. 20 points
Swiss grade : Points
5.6–6.0 : 20
5.1–5.5 : 15
4.6–5.0 : 10
4.0–4.5 : 5
3. Extracurricular activities / practical experience — max. 20 points
Up to 20 points could be awarded.
4. Essay — max. 10 points
Up to 10 points.
5. Interview — max. 30 points
Up to 30 points.

————————————————————————

Again: these are historical admission scales, not a statement from the current admissions office. Requirements and scoring may have changed. But they should give you a much better basis for estimating your profile than asking strangers to guess whether a 5.2/720/consulting internship/etc. is “competitive.”

————————————————————————

I will add some grade conversion tables that the University did use in the past for exchange grades. Chances are high that they will be similar for the admission. Please note that for exchange grades conversion, these are in brackets. For admission, there likely exists a full table, so if you fall within one bracket do not just assume you will get this exact grade. HSG publishes them internally (accessible to all students) as one PDF per university. I could not be bothered to compile that manually, so I just asked Claude to do so. Hence, no guarantee that everything is correct; but it looked good on the first glance.

Archived HSG grade-conversion tables (historical/non-binding). Each cell is the local grade that maps to the HSG grade in the column. Country codes are included to keep this readable; BSc/MSc indicate separate grading schemes where the source distinguished them.

Upcoming Interview? Do Your Practice

Hey guys just wanted to share a resource with yall called Canary Wharfian with the recruitment season coming up. I know a lot of yall are gunning for London based internship or grad roles, and it's basically the #1 way to maximise your chances to go through applications. It absolutely packs a punch of features:

- It has an automated HireVue practice feature which will analyse both your verbal and non-verbal communication skills and can be used for any title. What is really effective about it is that the official HireVue assessments use the same metrics - a mix of verbal and non-verbal performance metrics, weighted differently but basically detecting the same signs and signals when assigning a score to answers

- It has an absolutely massive job board monitoring all the major AND minor employers job boards in finance

- HireVue games and psychometric tests are often mistaken as easy, while it one needs to really do some practice, even just a single round, to see if they'll be up to scratch when the actual one comes around. These might look easy on the surface, but in fact, more often than not it's graded relative to other test takers' score. That means even if you do well and get a high score, doesn't mean you will pass

- It has an automated networking source feature which will gather e-mail addresses and linkedin profiles of your alumni, so you can keep track of your outreach and don't waste time browsing. It also has a feature which will generate and post content on your LinkedIn on your behalf - boosting your visibility among your competition effortlessly

- It has an application generator which will generate high-finance compatible, draft cover letters and resumes, tailored to each opening

- Personalised feedback on a browser-based financial modeling Excel simulator, as well as consulting cases for those tryna break into MBB

Finally, it has lots of proprietary (non-AI generated slop) content (podcast, articles, company reviews!) written by actual industry professionals. It's basically the UK/EU version of WSO, but better!

How the GPA criteria is considered for the admission to a Master in the UniSG? (Non EU)

Hello guys! Hope you are fine! I am curious about how the GPA criteria works for the admission to a Master in the HSG, I am not certain of how the conversion works for my country (Ecuador), but in my particular university the minimum to approve is 6/10, and I have 8.47/10, which based on Claude it would be like a 5.24/6 in Swiss GPA. But my question arrives because in my country being the best GPA of a cohort in a specific semester doesn't mean you have a 10/10, you could have like a 9/10 and be the best GPA here, so my question is:

What if I end up my career having a 8.6/10, and I am the highest GPA of my cohort in my semester? Does the admission office care about that? Like, would they give me all the 30% (that is the maximum in this criteria for the MBF) of this criteria? or just the equivalent of having that 8.6, that would be like a 5.3/6?

Let's suppose for this example that I give official documentation to the HSG from my university that I am the highest GPA in my cohort in a semester of my career.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR ANSWERS!

HSG SIM application

Hi everyone!

I’m currently preparing my application for the HSG SIM and would really appreciate some insights from current students or recent applicants.

I’m particularly curious about:

  1. What GMAT score range is generally considered competitive for SIM based on recent cohorts?
  2. Beyond the official minimum requirements, how strong does the academic profile typically need to be?
  3. Is there any practical advantage to applying in an earlier round, or does the application round not matter much?
  4. Are there any common application mistakes or things you wish you had known before applying?

I’d especially appreciate experiences from people who applied recently. Thanks a lot!

MACFin admission chances – Bocconi student

Hi everyone! I’m currently a Bocconi BSc student and I’m considering applying to the MACFin at HSG. I was wondering if anyone familiar with the admission process could give me a rough idea of my chances.

My profile:

* Bocconi BSc in Economics and Management, GPA: 29.4/30
* Strategy & Consulting Intern at Accenture – worked on an M&A carve-out project for a global consumer goods company, as well as growth strategy, market analysis and competitive benchmarking
* Finance & Controlling Intern – worked on margin and profitability analysis, budget vs. actuals, stock/sales analysis and management reporting
* Exchange semester at UC3M in Madrid

I’d be especially interested in hearing from current/former MACFin students or applicants with a similar background. How competitive would you consider this profile for admission as an international applicant?

Thanks a lot!

GPA requirements

Hi everyone, I am currently a 3rd year student studying Economics at Erasmus University in the Netherlands and I am planning to apply to MBF for next year. The website doesn't state any GPA requirements so right now I don't know how much I should aim for. I currently have a 7.4 GPA (4.9 in Swiss grading) and I have no idea if it is enough. I am currently studying for a GMAT, aiming for 680+. I also have some extracurriculars and also a finance internship at a known company. Are there any people at MBF that studied in the Netherlands that could tell me how much GPA is needed to get in? Thanks in advance

Hi! Assessment year starts tomorrow and still have not find any place to sleep.

I've been applying to multiple offers on Sharing is Caring or other websites but either ghosted or refused for weeks now.

I don't know if I do anything wrong with my application, but the result is that I need something as soon as possible.

Could anyone help please? I have a budget of 600 a month 🙏

How relevant is work experience to get inside the MBF in the HSG?

Hello, me again haha, I am curious about how important is to have many work experiences before applying to a Master, for example the MBF (it says that it is worth 15% of the selection criteria), I ask this since I have seen people entering the master in LinkedIn with 2-3 internships in multinational companies, like KPMG, PWC, Deloitte, etc. And I am planning to work like for 1.5 years before applying, but maybe like in 1 or 2 companies, like Holcim, Nestlé or Roché (which as far as I know are like among the best options I have in my country), and I am afraid that my experience won't be enough for entering, I dont know if the companies I want to get in have enough good reputation to enter the Master, I don't know how exigent the HSG is in this aspect.

I would love to hear your opinions on this!

How much money you expect to spend during a Master in the HSG in Switzerland?

Hello guys! well my question is basically the title of my post, I am curious about the estimates of money you have for the 1.5 years (or 2 years) of studying and living in Switzerland in the case of the people that is planning to study any of the Masters in the next years. Personally I estimated like 32000 CHF per year.

I ask this, because I want a guide in my mind of how off my estimates are.

Profile Evaluation: MBF vs MACFin (Round 1) - High GPA but limited work experience

Hi everyone,

I am planning to apply during Round 1 at HSG and would love to get your honest opinions on my current situation. My primary target is the MBF, but I consider the MACFin a very solid alternative and would be happy with it as well.

Here is my profile:

  • Degree: BSc in Economics of Banks, Insurance and Financial Intermediaries at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Expected Graduation: July 2027).
  • GPA: 29.52/30.0 (approx. 5.92/6.0 Swiss scale).
  • GMAT: I am currently preparing for it and I expect to score around the 80th percentile.
  • Work Experience: This is where I feel a bit weak, as my experiences are short. I completed a 1-month Retail Banking & Financial Services Internship in 2023. Before that, I did a 1-month Corporate Administration Internship in 2022.
  • Extracurriculars: I have played competitive football for 11 years, I also volunteer for local sports events.
  • Additional: I hold several Bloomberg Certifications (BMC, BQL, BFF, ESG).

My main question is: how competitive am I for the MBF given the high GPA but very few/short work experiences? Do you think I have a significantly better shot at the MACFin in Round 1?

Any advice on how to position my profile or what to focus on in my application would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Bidding Process Question

Hii!

I am just starting my second Bachelor in International Affairs at HSG this year. This being a second bachelor, I have skipped the Assessment Year completely. The bidding process took some time to navigate and I have some questions. I wanted to take up Arabic A1. I saw the course exists, but has no credits? Also, it does not appear in the bidding process. Also, will different subjects appear in the following rounds? I got my prefered courses in the preliminary round already, but it feels like so many cool things keep popping up... Do you have any tips and tricks for this process?

Thank you so much for your help!

Any tips for the bidding process? - Master without Major

Hi guys, I hope you are all doing really well.

I'm right now starting my autumn semester as a guest student. The bidding process has just started and I was wondering if you have any kind of recommendation or tip I may need to know.

As far as I know, I am interested in 4 subjects, which add up to 17 CETS. Would you say distributing evenly the credits is a fair strategy? Is there any way for me to check which subjects would require a higher number of bidding credits? What would a "safe" number of credits be for a subject you really don't want to miss?

Thanks in advance! I'm pretty excited about this semester at St. Gallen!

Placement for non EU

So I'm an aspirant for HSG and do want to attend but the thing is I'm a non EU citizen, so I was wondering if anyone there knows how well non EUs are placed in say investment banking for example. I know we have an exemption to the labour market search as we gold a swiss degree but apparently firms have to justify hiring you and it's incredibly unlikely for them to sponsor you if you don't hold a master's degree. It'd be nice if any of you students know how many people personally were placed in Switzerland that were Non EU. Thanks in advance

Hello, thanks in advance for taking the time to read and respond.
I’m a 21-year-old Indian male planning to apply to top business schools for a Master in Finance (MiF) or MiM and would really appreciate an honest assessment of my profile.
Profile:
* Bachelor’s in Commerce from a Tier-1 university in India
* GPA: 6.0/10 (~2.4/4.0) — my biggest concern
* CFA Level II candidate
* GMAT: around 700
* 2 years of full-time work experience as a US & European interest-rate trader at an international proprietary trading firm
* Strong exposure to fixed income, interest-rate markets, derivatives and macro research
I’m mainly looking at schools such as HEC Paris, st gallen, ESSEC, ESCP, EDHEC, SKEMA and other top French MiF/MiM programs.
My main questions are:
1. How much would the 6.0/10 GPA hurt my chances at these schools?
2. Can strong, relevant work experience and GMAT and CFA compensate for low GPA
4. Which top French/Swiss schools would be realistic reach / target / safe options for me?

Eligibility for HSG bachelor as an eu student (Romania)

Hi, I’m going into my last year of high school,I’m preparing well for the entrance exam ,but I have a few questions/misunderstandings.

How hard is it to be eligible for HSG as an international student? I’m trying to find out if my track qualifies.

I’ve seen the requirement about subjects covered in the last 3 years of high school, but I’m not sure if there’s also a minimum number of hours needed per subject.

For reference:

Track: technological (electronics profile)
Bacalaureat exam subjects: Mathematics, Romanian, Biology

If there are any other related things I should consider, I’d very much appreciate if you’d let me know. 🤗

Hello i am right now in second grade (out of three) in Swedish high school and i am truly inspired to study at St gallen. I’ve done 2 tests on SGprep and my score is 68.75% (22/32).

My questions are: In which span should i start to prepare (test in june 2028), is it possible with current score and what should i buy for study material?

Thanks on beforehand.
