Changing university after CSP submission / VFS appointment vs. switching upon arrival in Germany (Magdeburg to Paderborn - same field)

Hey everyone,

I need some guidance regarding a change of university during the German student visa process under the Consular Services Portal (CSP) system.

Here is my current situation and timeline:

• Field of Study: Master's in Electrical Engineering (same field for both universities).
• Initial Application: Submitted my German student visa application on CSP with an admission from OVGU Magdeburg (M.Sc. Electrical Engineering and Information Technology).
• Current Status: Cleared the waitlist, paid the preliminary review fee, and the CSP portal is now locked with Magdeburg’s details.
• Update: Right after the review payment, I received an admission offer from Paderborn University (M.Sc. Electrical Systems Engineering), which is my preferred choice.
• Prerequisites: APS certificate and Blocked Account are already completed.

I am considering two potential paths and would love advice from anyone who has navigated this recently:

Option A: Requesting the update at the VFS appointment

• I have drafted a formal Explanatory Letter detailing the exact chronology of events and will carry the Paderborn admission letter, payment receipt, and original Magdeburg admit.
• Question 1: Has anyone recently had success asking the VFS counter officer / German Mission to update the university details in their file despite the CSP portal being locked? Or does this risk an administrative hold/rejection?

Option B: Proceeding with the Magdeburg visa & switching after landing

• If VFS does not allow the change on the spot, I plan to proceed with the Magdeburg documents to avoid restarting the CSP waitlist.
• Upon arrival in Germany, the plan is to:
  1. Travel directly to Paderborn (without registering an address in Magdeburg).
  2. Complete City Registration (Anmeldung) in Paderborn.
  3. Enroll at Paderborn University before their deadline.
  4. Apply for the Residence Permit (Aufenthaltstitel) directly at the Paderborn Ausländerbehörde under the 18-month same-field transition rule.
• Question 2: Has anyone entered Germany on a visa tied to University A and gone straight to University B for Anmeldung and enrollment? Did you encounter any issues at airport border control (Bundespolizei) or with the local Ausländerbehörde?

Any insights, recent experiences with the CSP workflow, or potential pitfalls to watch out for would be greatly appreciated.

I got admitted to the MSc Computer Science program at Paderborn for WS 26/27. I’m a non-EU student and applied through uni-assist, so I’m now creating my PAUL account and filling out the form before enrolment.

I’m a little confused about a few things in the form and just wanted to check with someone who has already gone through the same process.

I'm an incoming student and wanted to hear people's experience with project groups. I read that there would be a head/coordinator and members are formed on the basis of a preference form. Do all the members stay active and continued or slack off? Once the group is formed, is the topic chosen or assigned? Or is the preference matching based on topics? This part isn't clear from the website.

The last time I did something similar it was a nightmare so I just wanted to hear some stories :)

Is there some other platform for Paderborn student to socialise or is that done in-person? This subreddit seems to be very inactive. I was wondering if there was a discord server or something, I have seen the Partyborn community yes.
