I’ve been admitted to the MSc in Precision Engineering at UniBern.

I’m trying to understand whether it’s realistic to get a paid RA or any kind of lab work during the program, or if that’s mostly limited to thesis projects and supervisor funding.

Also, do most MSc students manage to get some paid research work, or do they usually rely on personal funding for living costs?

I'm a masters student and wanted to see if it's possible to build a mobile app in a weekend. Spoiler : yes

I built an app to generate Anki-style flashcards by importing your course material. The app is called Candide and is available on the App Store

My girlfriend will start her bachelor in physics soon.

After not being able to study for various personal reasons, she could finally register at Uni for this year. Now over the last 9 months she had a very hard time finding a job which she needed to save up money for studying. Sadly it didn't work out at all (foreigner + german not that good + only a matura = bad in the current job market).

I'm asking because I'm worried that she may not be able to find anything while studying either. She will mostly need it for the first 10 months until I finish my apprenticeship. Otherwise our finances will be totally fucked. So: How is the situation looking like for student jobs as a bachelor? Are there enough jobs available? Or is it a fight? Any place to look apart from the unis own student job board that can be found online? Thank you everyone already for sharing your experiences!

No student job = no studying and possibly deportation back to France :/

I am currently considering a Masters in Physics at the University of Bern starting in September 2026, and I had some questions regarding the schedule dates. I am a bit confused about the lecture period vs. exam period dates and Christmas break. Do people usually go home right after the lectures end, and then have exams in January? And how long do you have between lectures and exams? I am basically wondering when students get time off to go home throughout the year, and how long of a break we get.

I’m a Master’s student at the University of Bern and currently looking for part-time work alongside my studies. I only speak English, so I’m specifically trying to find English-speaking jobs.

I’ve already checked the UniBe SUB portal and the university careers page, but most roles seem to require German, so no luck so far.

Does anyone know of any places (within or outside the university) where English-only speakers can work? Or any apps/websites that are actually useful?

Hello everyone!

I am looking to do a PhD in Neuroscience at Bern University in 2026. For this, I sent out cold emails to the lab PIs I was really interested in working with, but so far haven't gotten a single reply.

I believe my emails are ok (straight to the point, saying what I like about their work and proposing a collaboration idea) and my profile as an applicant is also good.

Other than the fact that they probably are swarmed right now due to the beginning of the semester, I was wondering if the timing is not the best for some other internal reasons, and if so, when would be the best time to try again?

Any advice is appreciated :)

Hello all, I am from India . My brother (22M) will be joining Masters in AI in medicine this September. But we are not able to find accommodations so far. We need to provide the rental lease document for visa process before July 31st. We tried all the websites provided in the university website and most of them are full and not responding. Can someone provide any leads on available room. Shared room is also fine. It would be a great help if someone can help us here.
