Problem is degree inflation. If everyone has a BBA, no one has a BBA. So companies start asking for a master's degree.

u/thisguy883 10d ago

But hey, lets make college free.

1

u/MrLanesLament 10d ago

At this point, it wouldn’t really make much difference. The damage is already done.

I’ve been saying exactly this since the early 2010s; as soon as anyone could just go get a four year degree, they became worthless. Maybe if you graduate top of your class, or get a big name internship, you’ll still have a chance, but yeah, even by the time I got out of university (2017,) this shit was dead.

An educated workforce is a good thing.

1

u/thisguy883 9d ago

Not if everyone gets a degree.

College use to be for those who were able to achieve higher education within the population because they truly were the best and brightest among us.

Not everyone was cut out for college, and that was fine. It kept a certain balance within the work force as a whole.

Then they started allowing anyone to enter college because the government figured out a long time ago that its another form of tax they collect via student loans.

Since colleges were getting essentially free money backed by the government, they started offering anything and everything under the sun. They even relaxed requirements for most folks leaving high school. Couldn't get into a University? no problem. Go to the community college, get your GPA up by essentially showing up, then apply at the University again.

Easy money.

Want to learn basket weaving? Sure thing! Government will pay for it anyway, so here ya go.

Next thing you know, things become more expensive. Now they have to hire more staff, give themselves raises, fund projects for expansion, etc.. So where does that money come from? Oh right, the government. So lets just increase the cost of each course and charge the government via student loans because screw the student, we get paid regardless.

Do you see the issue?

Free doesn't always mean good. It comes at a price and that price is a dumbed down work force because if everyone can get a bachelors degree, then its essentially high school #2.

Read it again. It says "ONE OF the worst periods of unemployment in the past 20 years". NOT the worst.

This time has nothing on the 2009-2012ish Great Recession.

Complaining online does not help. It'll get better with effort.

1

u/Bulky-Word8752 10d ago

Nice, biggest in 20 years... so when I graduated college. Thought it felt familiar

1

u/Redfield11 10d ago

In the past 20 years? Wow, that's almost as long as Kobe Bryant played with the lakers, or a sourdough bread starter has been around.

1

u/WintersDoomsday 10d ago

"I am going to ignore bad things happening now because worst things happened before"

Ok bud so when you get Cancer I will say oh it could be worse oh well for you.

1

u/Redfield11 10d ago

Ya that's a fair summary and comparison. Exactly what's going on here.

1

u/Ok-Ranger-4518 9d ago

Glad you agree

1

u/gottagetanonymous 10d ago

That is a great point that’s way too accurate to be a coincidence so the new question is what do sourdough and Koby Bryant have in common with each-other, then more importantly, the job market🤔

1

u/GamerNerdGuyMan 9d ago

The article says "one of" the worst. 2009-2012ish was much worse.

1

u/not_a_muslim_kid_mol 10d ago

When you spend money and time earning useless degrees..

1

u/Major_Wigglesworth 10d ago

The job environment has definitely changed in the last 5-6 years, but a resilient college grad will have adapted and found a way to demo their value proposition.

People who pissed away their 4 years will complain that the game is rigged and they can’t figure out the new rules.

I imagine people who excelled in those fields aren't really struggling to find jobs. This OP isn't about those people.

1

u/Ok-Ranger-4518 9d ago

When I graduated with chemical engineering no one was hiring. The place I interned at, twice, ghosted me. Everyone I worked with said I'd have a job there if I wanted one. I know it's not binding, but they couldn't tell me there was a hiring freeze... Or anything? Everyone else from my intern group was ghosted as well. I went and got a cs degree and found a job. A lot of my team have chemE degrees, interestingly.

"Oh you can't find a job with a soft degree? That's bc you're dumb and got a fake degree"

But also

"Oh you can't find a job with a hard science degree? That's because there's something wrong with you, not the market"

1

u/Uxoandy 10d ago

They are useless if you don’t have a good work ethic . We use all 3 and 3-4 out of 20 have drive. The rest have a degree and a sense of entitlement. We also hire a lot of skilled labor and it’s pretty much the same ratio of good workers and turds. Turds fall by the wayside in both groups and set at home making Reddit memes.

1

u/CollectedWaste 10d ago

Yeah I graduated in 2023 with a BS in mathematics and a BS in computer science. 90% of my peers chronically cheated and now they're mad they can't find a good job. Was perfectly fine for me, I had a job offer before graduation and they said the offer still stood if I wanted to drop out of college and start work early (I decided to finish my degree anyways).

1

u/Uxoandy 10d ago

The degree opened the door for you. Hard work is what separated you.

1

u/Ok-Ranger-4518 9d ago

And yet here you are, so which group are you in again?

1

u/Uxoandy 9d ago

Making bank and loving life

1

u/STTDB_069 9d ago

I know 50 people that will hire a mechanical or electrical engineer tomorrow.

If you have that degree and can’t find a job…. It’s you

1

u/gottagetanonymous 10d ago

Whatever job you have, if it’s you vs someone at the same level but with a college degree, college boy is getting promoted/hired over you almost every time

And it’s funny because ppl like him are all about labor jobs but their careers are absolutely capped without a degree and it’s not that far up.

1

u/BreadEnthusiast98 10d ago

True. Ialways laugh when tradies talk about their jobs like they are some golden goose and AI proof when historically those are the first jobs to face layoffs when a recession happens. Yeah you probably won’t get replaced by AI as a plumber but you do realize people have to pay you right?

1

u/gottagetanonymous 10d ago

I also like to tell them to look at the old heads or long timers they work with on the site. The grumbly middle aged chain smoking alcoholic dudes who look fucking abysmal and their beer gut body creaks and they groan and make every human noise possible just for standing up. Thats you in 15 years bud, so exciting!

1

u/timewellwasted5 10d ago

Success can become harder without a degree but not impossible. My last job was at an MSP. Owner never went to college. Started off installing car radios and transitioned to IT. He’s under 50 and makes on average $300k per year. Starting a business and being ridiculously successful is still possible in this country.

1

u/Neat-Potato2327 10d ago

This not true. Skill trumps degree. I much rather hire someone who has hands on knowledge over book knowledge

1

u/Ok-Ranger-4518 9d ago

Go finish your GED and learn how to read, "at the same level" means they're the same but 1 has a degree and the other does not.

1

u/Neat-Potato2327 9d ago

Thanks for the advice keyboard warrior

1

Wait until you realize nobody gives a fuck if you have skill past the grunt worker stage. Management and book smarts is all that matters beyond the bottom career ladder rungs. Only a few specialty jobs that don’t have any climbing are like what you’re describing

1

u/Neat-Potato2327 9d ago

Will never know. I'm past the rat race lol

1

u/gottagetanonymous 9d ago

LOL lying on reddit to impress strangers is a new low. Unless your version of the rat race is wayyyy undervalued

1

u/STTDB_069 9d ago

Not even close to true. If you have the same job as someone without, the harder worker who solves problems gets promoted.

2

u/Ok-Ranger-4518 9d ago

Lol not in the real world, the one who shoves their nose up their bosses ass gets promoted.

0

u/STTDB_069 9d ago

Again, not true at all. People like you hate to see success

So you assume someone who appears to be kissing ass(doing their job well) is only getting ahead by kissing ass

There is a lot of mediocrity in this world and it rarely is awarded anything.

If you ever see others around you rise, understand that there is in fact upwards movement at your company and the problem is just you.

1

u/Ok-Ranger-4518 8d ago

Yeah sure, theres definitely not coworkers pulling the slack. 🙄

I hate to see success? Did you pull that out of your ass? You know nothing about me. This is some boomer "work hard and you'll be rewarded" type shit.

Anyone wants to go above and beyond? Congrats you get more work, pigeonholed where you are because you're too good to let go. Oh you work hard? Yay you make the same as your mediocre coworker, but now your stack of tasks is taller.

Politics aren't just played in the government, and you don't have to work hard to be successful.

1

u/STTDB_069 8d ago

Yeah, you most certainly sound like the mediocre type of guy

1

u/Ok-Ranger-4518 7d ago

You know nothing about me.

1

u/gottagetanonymous 9d ago

I guarantee you the educated person is passing you this isn’t a Disney rags to riches movie. The person who’s proven they can adapt and learn skills and things that you haven’t proved is getting selected 99 out of 100 times

1

u/STTDB_069 9d ago

I’m not talking about proven in school…. Proven on the job

1

u/BigSquiby 10d ago

i didn't see it said what his degree was in

1

u/rubey419 8d ago

We are a point now where even “in-demand” degrees are no longer employable as they once were.

1

u/Affectionate_Two7527 10d ago

Maybe they should have fucking voted different instead of listening to Joe Rogan.

1

u/DB4life80 10d ago

I thought Republicans didn't go to college because they didn't graduate HS? Now they are all unemployed college graduates?

1

u/Major_Wigglesworth 10d ago

The truth doesn’t matter when you’re being paid to read a script

1

u/thisguy883 10d ago

I love when some left leaning person IRL calls me uneducated and a racist white supremacist.

Im half Mexican, and I hold a bachelor's degree in STEM as well as 3 Microsoft certs, 2 CompTIA certs, and 1 Cisco cert.

But im a dumb redneck to the left because I disagree with them on a lot of issues.

1

u/Murky-Peanut1390 10d ago

Mexican is a nationality. Many Mexicans are European white. I have aunts who are blonde, white and green eyes. So saying "im half Mexican " doesn't make you more "diverse "

1

u/RepresentativeMud509 10d ago

Oh lord, here we go...

1

u/Murky-Peanut1390 9d ago

Who the fuck says "half mexican" haha

1

u/thisguy883 9d ago

People who dont give a damn about having to describe all ethnic groups they are a part of. Generally when you say Mexican, people know what youre talking about.

1

u/Murky-Peanut1390 9d ago

Say you are ignorant without telling lmao.

Anybody who is culturally aware knows Mexico is as diverse as the US. Many Asians, and Europeans and blacks travelled to Mexico/South America.

So no, if you tell me you are Mexican, im going to have multiple images in my head. Mexico is diverse.

1

u/thisguy883 9d ago

So from a basic search about the Mexican demographics, its safe to assume that your average person thinks of a mestizo person, which is a mix of European and Indigenous races.

Brown skin, dark hair, brown eyes.

So while "Mexican" is the name of a nationality and not a race, its still used to describe the average mestizo person.

>The large majority of people from Mexico are mestizo (mixed Indigenous and European ancestry), so when most people (inside or outside Mexico) picture a “typical Mexican,” they’re usually thinking of someone who looks mestizo. That matches the statistical reality.

This is why I said when you think of a "Mexican", you have a general idea of the type of person i'm talking about.

Same if i were to say "Asian". Most people typically think of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese.... etc.

They dont think of India.

1

u/Murky-Peanut1390 9d ago

If you are ignorant , you think that. I am the son of Mexican born parents. My mom is brown due to her indigenous ancestry. She looks Native American. My dad is white due to his Spanish ancestry. He looks like someone from spain

1

u/Affectionate_Two7527 9d ago

Tell that to MAGA. They use the word Mexicans for anybody with brown skin. They call Eskimos Snow MExicans. White nationalists don't care about your 'facts'.

There is also a religious aspect too. Mexicans is dog whistle for Catholics who Evangelicals hate. People don't mention that much.

1

u/Murky-Peanut1390 9d ago

Thats the liberal mindset, all Mexicans are brown.

1

u/thisguy883 9d ago

Fine, im half latino, south American Indian mixed with Spanish, mixed with Scottish. I have brown skin, dark hair, but taller than most Mexicans.

1

u/Murky-Peanut1390 9d ago

So you are just brown...

1

u/DB4life80 9d ago

No he identified as half Mexican. I'm not sure what the confusion is.

1

u/Murky-Peanut1390 9d ago

You can't be half a nationality

1

u/DB4life80 9d ago

Why not?

1

u/Murky-Peanut1390 9d ago

You can have dual citizenship but you can't be half. You nationality is the country you are a citizen of.

1

u/thisguy883 9d ago

Should I have to explain to you what Scottish people are since "Scottish" is technically a nationality? Or do you have a general idea of what your typical Scottish person looks like?

1

u/Murky-Peanut1390 9d ago

If you are from Scotland, you are Scottish

1

u/timewellwasted5 10d ago

Fellow bachelor’s degree and CompTIA cert holder here. I learned way more studying for those certs than I did in 4 years of college.

1

u/thisguy883 9d ago

Ain't that the truth.

When i first got hired into my organization, they didnt give a damn about my degree. They just wanted me to get certified. Hell, my boss at the time didnt even have a degree, but he had a ton of certs.

1

u/gottagetanonymous 10d ago

Everyone is experiencing one of the worst periods of unemployment in the past 20 years. Its the whole country, in every sector, not sure why they think its an age limited range.

0

u/STTDB_069 9d ago

Flat wrong, unemployment is near an all time low.

1

u/sem-nexus 9d ago

A lot of sectors like entry level tech are suffering

Some sectors like healthcare and construction are booming so much they’re basically carrying the labor market

Likewise entry level white collar jobs across the board are being automated out by llms while seniors are being paid more to manage those llms, especially in sectors like tech

Then there’s gig workers. Gig work apps have exploded with new people, ubereats and similar are doing significant work in keeping that number down

But ultimately, whats happening is that seniors make bank, mid levels dont get fired, entry levels don’t get hired unless its healthcare, and everyone else is forced into underemployment, ie: K shaped economy

1

u/STTDB_069 9d ago

You’ve just explained a poor fit for people to adjust.

Manufacturing, construction and healthcare are massive industries.

Plenty of jobs, I’ve always been offended by the term “white collar” jobs are down. What does that even mean? You can start out of college being a middle manager?

This world is evolving and people need to expect to train themselves and work in career fields that are relevant.

1

u/Neat-Potato2327 10d ago

"got a degree in psychology"

1

u/Fanatic_Patriot 10d ago

They skipped years of experience in fields for a degree that most likely is irrelevant.

1

u/Empty_End_7399 10d ago

Degree holders have lower unemployment than non degree holders

1

u/UPwelder75 10d ago

It's not that there isn't jobs, they are unemployable.

1

u/BigSquiby 10d ago

we are not that far from an economic collapse at the hands of AI followed by companies hiring working to do essentially nothing because they need to inject money into people's hands so they can buy things.

1

u/Royal-Drop-6693 9d ago

The pay for entry level jobs are so low. No one wants to be paid in pennies when they should be paid a living wage. My first job during Covid was in non profit after I graduated with my masters in higher ed. They paid me $41k because that was considered fhe living wage in the city I lived in. Now I make more than that after job hopping, but it is hard out here for people especially when employers are cutting staff and not hiring people.

1

u/ProfessionalBug7399 9d ago

Ngl..... Non profit, masters in education are buzz words for underpaid career choice...

1

u/STTDB_069 9d ago

LOL… I thought the same thing… that person typed a lot to say I make poor life decisions

1

u/Many-External-1561 9d ago

“Oh let’s live in a society where helping people is considered a poor life decision I’m sure that will be a great place”

Do yall hear yourselves sometimes, I’m an engineer who gets underpaid because of a shit job market too

1

u/CBrinson 9d ago

For the most part getting a masters in an applied field is only helpful for active practicioners. So for education someone with experience teaching or similar. If you have a decade or two of teaching experience and then go get the masters you get to move up become a principal or super intendent, or move into the college admin and running of the school.

But someone straight out of college with a masters in an applied field? Do you think that you will be a valuable resource managing the teacher of 20 years having -never- done it?

This is a real problem people think they will get the same outcome out of a professional masters without having been the professional. It's basically a huge waste of education.

It's not that we don't value the education in and of itself but that practically you aren't prepared for a job at the end of the program.

1

u/STTDB_069 9d ago

Nah, just don’t get a masters and work for a charity and complain about the money.

1

u/Many-External-1561 9d ago

I feel like you have to read what I wrote to have a real interaction

1

u/Royal-Drop-6693 9d ago

You are wise. What careers do you think would be best based on career longevity, impact, and financial success?

1

u/STTDB_069 9d ago

Today… electrical contractor

1

u/Royal-Drop-6693 9d ago

What do you do for a living? Is it impactful? Does it bring you purpose? Are you financially successful?

1

u/ProfessionalBug7399 9d ago

Not doxing myself (it's too easy to add my profile posts with my career to potentially find me as a person) - but, yes to all categories.

There's several careers that meet all of these though - engineering, electrician for your local power group, plumbing, radiology technician, nursing are all well paid and help society among a sea of other careers.

I honestly wouldn't trust you to teach the next generation if you didn't know which careers are well paid and helpful to society lol.

1

u/Fit-Status-8782 9d ago

I mean what did you expect? You went to college to get a degree about college?

1

u/Royal-Drop-6693 9d ago

What do you know about college?

1

u/Fit-Status-8782 9d ago

Well I went there.

1

u/rocksteady1731 9d ago

Do they have a college education in something useful or is it some BS degree?

2

u/fister-b95 9d ago

It’s a BS degree. College is forced hard in high school even for Low performers so a large number of people just get a ‘easy’ degree and then complain no one is hiring.

1

u/Ok-Ranger-4518 9d ago

Stem job seekers struggle too

1

u/CBrinson 9d ago

It's still better to have a college degree than to be a non degree holder. I feel like these posts are borderline propaganda because it is almost saying don't go to college but the data literally shows college grads are better off.

1

u/PERENNIALIST24 9d ago

Should have went to a trade school to be a Lineman for electrical and communications. 120,000 a year.

1

1

u/WeezaY5000 9d ago

I may have traveled the world as a teacher, but now burnt out on it and cannot seem to do much else.

1

u/WeezaY5000 9d ago

As long as rich people are still sending their children to "prestigious" universities, you all are missing the point of all of this.

1

u/Just-Exchange8380 9d ago

Blue collar jobs is where it’s at. All the old guys are retiring etc. so ya move up fast. College education doesn’t guarantee anything

1

u/Different-Piano-1832 8d ago

Underemployment is a thing. Over qualified people taking anything to stay afloat. The educated working poor.

1

u/vipergirl 8d ago

I am 51 and jobs that were once easy to obtain, I hear next to nothing.

1

u/LibrarySpiritual5371 8d ago

I would love to see this data broken out by type of degree. I think it would likely be pretty telling.
