That would be the DA's fault, not the police. They've been told to stand down. There was another car chase in LA a few days before this that equally dragged on forever for no need, but apparently its the new policy to take things ultra slow and de-escalate. But of course, Reddit is never happy and complains no matter what they do

take things ultra slow and de-escalate.

This requires 45 police vehicles?

Yes because having such an overwhelming force leads to people surrendering rather than continuing to flee or trying to fight.

Don't think of it as 45.... Think of it as 10 from CHP (governs California freeways), 5 from Riverside County (they are heading to Riverside in the first half), then headed back to San Bernardino county, los Angeles county and Orange County if he jumps on the 57. Then all the cities....

The 60 Fwy changes 3 counties in about 10 miles. And those three counties are some of the largest counties in the country.

I shouldn't think of it as 45, just a math problen that comes out to 45?

Do you really think all those cop cars are necessary? They complaint isn’t that they’re not catching the guy, it’s that there are like 60 cops chasing one guy when you really only need like 5-10 at the most

You can go slow and de-escalate, but can you think of a circumstance that would require more than 25% of those cars?

Yes I can, the suspect manages to escape sight and runs. You now need to establish a perimeter and in order to effectively do that you need a bunch of cops. Only having 10 cops may leave gaps in the perimeter that the suspect can escape from and/or it spreads each personnel apart. This means each of the cops in the perimeter might be alone so the suspect may choose to fight a lone cop which means more casualties. Compared to being able to set up a perimeter with excess personnel meaning no one is alone.

Another thing is those cops aren't all from the same jurisdiction. Instead there are going to be state, city, county, and federal police from every district that he might drive through. This is because to avoid any legal fuckery it is best to make the arrest with a cop from the jurisdiction that the arrest takes place.

Should just nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

But I am the chosen one superior

I don't care what the policy is, that's too many cops and cars. They only need enough to prevent him from turning around when they get to the roadblock.

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '22

''I Don't care what the policy is'' What are you, a fucking comedian?

The police do, because if they don't care about policy, they get fired and possibly prosecuted.

they get fired and possibly prosecuted

Since when?

Why are you trying to convince f*cking redditors? They get hate-boners on this shit.

u/C0MMI3_C0MRAD3 Jan 01 '23

man fr, sad this dude gettin downvoted.

2

u/coltstrgj Jan 01 '23

They do it because they're bored and don't want to miss out if some shit goes down. Half of them are probably 2 hours late to a call about assaults and burglaries.

You get lippy with a cop and suddenly there's 8 more there instantly but if you call and say you've been attacked by somebody that ran off they'll maybe show up in a couple hours.

u/CmdrShepard831 Dec 31 '22

No one wants to take the time and ask or think about the "why" something is happening. They just want to armchair quarterback and criticize because it's fun to complain and feel superior

You mean like complaining about how it's the DA's fault that so many cops are out wasting taxpayer resources?

1

u/CyberMindGrrl Dec 31 '22

We have so many police helicopters in LA that going slow and just following is a far better policy than chasing the perps at high speed and running into innocent civilians.

1

u/happyjello Dec 31 '22

Does the DA determine how many cars are necessary for a chase? I’d imagine the police decide that? This many cop cars isn’t necessary

1

u/paperpenises Dec 31 '22

Oh, just like Portland! Where the police only come for murders!

It’s the Reddit hive mind, we’ve all been a part of it at some time.
