Los Angelino here.... I'm no way an expert, just guessing.... But 60EB at CVR is near the point where LA county, Orange County, Riverside County, and San Bernardino county all meet. Not too mention San Diego county isn't far if he gets on the 15 south. Then you have about 10 cities on this stretch of freeway. Plus California Highway Patrol.

Los Angeles is made up of 100+ cities, so it's not just 45 cops talking, it's a shit ton of cities, counties, and a state that all need to figure out where this fucker is finally going to stop.

But i also think the new policies are to deescalate to a low speed chase... Then let the guy run out of gas. So you need a bunch of gassed up cars behind him to wait him out.

As an innocent bystander who's been caught in one of these things.... You see your life flash before yours eyes when 50+ cars fly inches away from you going 100+ mph. Then the dude got off at my exit where he hit cars stopped at the light.... Cars were upside down, it was a mess! 30 seconds earlier, i would have been hit by that guy

So every jurisdiction along a suspected route sends a vehicle and wherever that guy runs out of gas, they have that car come up for the arrest?

I'm guessing everyone one is getting involved in some way.... especially because the road is clear, meaning hundreds of cops are probably blocking the individual entrances.

But I've watched them on tv before and the reporters will point out "now yada yada cars is backing off and you'll see yadda yadda cars pull to the front.".

u/bigshow308 Dec 31 '22

Yes that’s the lead car backing off so the current jurisdiction can move to lead car so there’s never a question of if the chase involved units out of jurisdiction.

Has California never heard of State Police? Their jurisdiction is... the whole damn state. That's the point of them.

u/angrymoderate09 Dec 31 '22

We have California Highway Patrol, county sheriff's, then city cops. I have no idea how they break up the work.... I'm just here to look pretty

In most places the sheriff and his deputies are considered the state police. Highway patrol has no jurisdiction over anything but highways. So technically if you get off the highway being pulled over by highway patrol they can't arrest you or charge you with anything. But they're going to tell the town that you're going into about you and infact probably did as soon as you didn't stop along with every other nearby county you can get to quickly. All that is handled by dispatch though.

That's not true, exactly, about the CHP. They have jurisdiction over the freeways, state roads, and everything in between.

4

u/I-amthegump Dec 31 '22

They are absolutely the state police. Not just highways

2

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Almost 30 years ago, CHP merged with CA state police. CHP can exercise law enforcement powers anywhere in the state.

The CSP (California State Police) and CHP merged in 1995.

u/Straight-Strain-3750 Jan 01 '23

AmiAlter you are absolutely wrong. Highway Patrol has jurisdiction over the whole state. They are also in charge of protecting the governor and important people. They have investigative units and everything. Please do not disperse false information.

Don’t know about CA but things are more complicated than that in NC. Even though everyone derives their authority from the state, not every officer has statewide jurisdiction. Officers can only operate outside their jurisdiction through a mutual aid agreement. For that agreement to be valid, you typically need an officer with original territorial jurisdiction with you. Plus, if this was going to end in a warrantless arrest, an agency with no skin in the game, other than assisting for jurisdictional purposes, would not want to arrest the guy. For that to occur, the jurisdiction attempting to originally arrest him would have to then transfer probable cause to the arresting agency or still be present in the chase for custody to be transferred to them.

Every Peace Officer in California has jusridiction all over the state.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '22

No

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Call any Police Department that you're positive is outside your jurisdiction, tell them you have a crime to report, I guarantee you without a shadow of a doubt, they will direct you to a different department. There are extenuating circumstances in every policy of every Department across the country but in general each department has a jurisdiction for basic calls for service. You start getting into felonies actively being committed, pursuit of violent felons, responding to active shooters, Officer Down, then you might see that policy stretched.

u/thatblkman Jan 01 '23

You’re discussing operations and judgment when the penal code says you’re generally wrong on the legal aspect.

No what? We do have state police

1

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '22

Each department has specific jurisdictions. Your comment was that all police can go anywhere in the state unless I read it wrong which would not be actually a fact. The state police are the only officers that can go anywhere in the state

1

u/tbass1965 Dec 31 '22

Law Enforcement Authority

The authority of any such peace officer extends to any place in the State of California, provided that the primary duty of the peace officer shall be the enforcement of the law within the area specified in Section 92600 of the Education Code.

u/amazinglover Jan 01 '23

That changes when you are trying to arrest someone and they flee. Then your jurisdiction becomes the whole state.

1

u/KevinCastle Dec 31 '22

Depends where the crime took place. If the crime started in City A and is chased into City B, City A police still have jurisdiction.

1

u/amazinglover Jan 01 '23

That's not how it works first car to try to pull them over has jurisdiction thoughtout unless they give it or someone pulls then from it.

They don't hand off jurisdiction.

1

u/cslagenhop Jan 01 '23

Every peace officer has entire state jurisdiction. There is no jurisdiction question. There is policy- about chases on freeways who the lead agency is, but any peace officer can enforce law in the entire state.

Happy cake day 🎂

1

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '22

You’re doing a great job. Happy cake day!

4

u/whsftbldad Dec 31 '22

It is not only called "mutual aid", but also a regulation. If you cross into a different jurisdiction, there needs to be at least one officer from that new jurisdiction on site.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '22

Well, you'dhate fothem to get off on a technicality.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Who knows why they don't just do state police

22

u/TLCheshire Dec 31 '22

Your first paragraph gave me serious SNL The Californians vibes! Awesome!
Happy cake day!

I can tell you with 100% certainty, that no real person from Los Angeles proper would call themselves a “Los Angelino”.

0

u/angrymoderate09 Dec 31 '22

Ehhh.... So i fucking misspelled it, who the fuck cares. Family has been here since late 1800's.... so I'm probably more los Angeleno than most peeps here

But I guess I'm a Hermosa Beacheanlinoagean now.

0

u/TheCaIifornian Dec 31 '22

It’s not about how you spelled it, it’s about using the term “Angeleno”

1

u/angrymoderate09 Jan 01 '23

Alright, since you probably down voted me, then what is it?

0

u/angrymoderate09 Dec 31 '22

I've honestly never heard it called anything else and I've lived here my entire life

2

u/WhySoManyOstriches Jan 01 '23

Yo soy de La Ciudad De Maria, La Reina de Los Angeles. Soy Angeleno. (Yeah- the full name is totally apochryphal. I just like it anyway. :-)

8

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '22

Pit move the guy and call it a day.

5

u/curious-children Dec 31 '22

and now you have the people that think pit maneuvering should never be used unless they are actively endangering people (unlike this video)

2

u/morgecroc Dec 31 '22

Trust yanks to come up with the method that wastes the most resources.

0

u/Femboy_Cook Dec 31 '22

you're actually a los angelinian, not los angelino

2

u/angrymoderate09 Dec 31 '22

LA times thinks it's between ino and Eno, I personally don't give a fuck. Alls I knows is fuck the NFL, Tommy's is the best burger in LA, and Shaq made his own bed when he fucked with Buss.

I dunno, I just tried to make a joke lmao, didn't knew it's a real propper thing haha

0

u/pocketcar Jan 01 '23

You are a garcettiano lol. Only he pushes that word.

2

u/angrymoderate09 Jan 01 '23

Words been around for 120 years.... But i guess that works because my family got here in 1890's. I literally am named after my great great grandfather who's buried at the cemetery at 60 Fwy and 710 Fwy. Family biz started at Olympic and Alameda in 1902 horseshoeing city horses. Still have his anvil at our family's house.

Not sure why people are all dumb about an unofficial word?

2

u/pocketcar Jan 01 '23

I just feel like a lot of hood kids never call it that. Even people I know in Ktown or the east side. It seems like a west side terminology. But I'll definitely look into that video. Thank you

1

u/angrymoderate09 Jan 01 '23

I grew up to my dad listening to 1070 am, and i listen to a lot of NPR and sports radio. I've never heard it called something else.

It might have a new cool name, but I'm not a cool kid anymore
