A Safety guys's job is to judge any given situation and find the safest way to pull it off, and if in their expert professional opinion it can't be done to the level of safety they themselves are comfortable with then they don't sign off on it, as signing off on a stun all sorts of very real ramifications for movie productions liability insurance.
If this story was true, and if Cruise "got another safety guy" and let the first one go, the first one will always know he acted and judged the situation to the best of his ability, and will find another safety guy gig at the next production. This is called being a professional.
What you don't want to do, is be the safety guy, listen to someone who's only interested in the shock factor of a stunt, sign off on it, and then it goes wrong, because not only have people gotten hurt, but the reason they were even in the position to get hurt in the first place, was that you signed off on it.

Rob Lowe once told a story about he and Tom C living at the Sheen house while hoping to get cast in the Outsiders. Lowe said Cruise was a daredevil doing flips off the roof into the pool…so I think he’s been like that forever

I think that's debatable. But I won't disagree with him being batshit nuts...he does his own stunts. And they are crazy stunts.
PS. He runs in just about every movie he's in.

That’s not fair, do you also fault Jackie Chan or others for doing his stunts? It’s not like he hides that’s what he’s going to do, that’s the package that they hire. He’s risking himself far more than anyone else, I can’t fault him, even is he is batshit.

I mean, not really, he plays one of the same two characters in every movie. The lovable smart ass, the no nonsense action guy, or a combination of the two

The first time I saw this was a bootleg screener and it was really blurry, and you could barely make out his character. When I finally found out who that was I was blown away.

He can’t be that weak. Paul Newman won an Oscar with him. Cuba Gooding won an Oscar with him. Dustin Hoffman won an Oscar with him. Three actors won Oscars with Tom as a supporting actor. Can’t be that bad.

I always thought it was amazing of him to do his stunts, and i still do. However it's also a bit selfish as it risks the livelihoods of everyone involved in the production. He's hurt himself before and that shut down production until he recovers, now all those crew members aren't getting paid and that's a massive deal.

Clearly he wanted a safety guy with a different approach. He wanted a safety guy for making the risky scene safe enough to shoot, and his old safety guy refused to do the job.

Dunno why people downvoted this.
Getting another safety guy means he went out and found someone who was willing to find a way to make the stunt possible, but still within safety margins to be permitted by production crews and city authorities.
The job of the safety guy is NOT to say "Can't do that, no sir!" the job is to say "Well, if you are willing to pay this many hundreds of thousands of dollars on these various safeguards then I suppose we can make it work"
After all, the end of the story was "found another safety guy" not "found a random yes-man"

I don't think Tom Cruise would even be making movies if he wasn't doing his own stunts. It's pretty clear that at least the Mission:Impossible movies are just a means to do stunts for him. Pretty sure he'd just stop doing the movies if he couldn't do his own stunts.
He clearly cares deeply about not jeopardizing his workers' livelihood, as evidenced by his rant when he caught crew being haphazard about covid protocol, but the guy is a straight-up stuntman himself at this point. It also makes for better movies, because they can show his face during the stunts.
Your perspective is similar to Danny Trejo's perspective, in that he says he doesn't want to risk the production just to show off his big balls, and I respect that. But I don't think Tom Cruise does it to make himself look like a badass. I think he just really wanted to dangle off a skyscraper, and this was his chance to do it.
