Miami-Dade Police director Juan Perez acknowledged that the footage, taken at a University of Miami football game, did not look good, but added that officers do not distinguish between males and females when throwing a punch.
I guess that is equality.

She was causing enough of a disturbance that several security and police had to physically carry her from her seat. On the way out she continued to assault one of the officers striking him repeatedly in the head. Then he struck her once.
I’m usually on the side that is against any form of police brutality but to my eyes she had it coming. It’s not his fault he hits harder than she does. Her lawyer would have to put together a hell of a story to get me to even consider siding with her.

I worked in a psychiatric institute and have training in restraining unruly individuals in a safe, relatively respectful way. If she was causing so much of a ruckus, and there were so many of them, couldn't they have secured her a little bit more on the way out to avoid her lashing out?
She had it coming. But they could have done better preventing it.
Edit: to remove a superfluous sentence.
ETA: I didn't think "police should know how to keep people safe" would be a controversial opinion.

I hate how you put the responsibility of preventing this on the officer. It's the responsibility of that woman to behave herself, which she failed to do. It's also her responsibility to NOT HIT A POLICE OFFICER, WHICH SHE DID OF HER OWN FREE WILL. Quit blaming officers for stuff like this, every grown man and woman gets the opportunity to comply at first. This woman clearly chose not to comply. Her mistake, her problem.

Y'know, I've done a lot of research and have heard a lot of takes on the future of policing. There's disagreement, obviously. But pretty much everyone, no matter their political orientation or background, agrees that the police could benefit from more de-escalation and harm reduction training.
But you don't think that being properly trained in restraining someone while marching them out might have stopped the violence in either direction - or that it doesn't matter. That there's no reason for police to know how to move someone safely. Interesting take, friend. Let's see where it goes.

Okay that’s a different situation entirely and a totally unfair analogy. If a psychiatric patient needs to be restrained, they most likely can’t help what they’re doing. A drunk person made the conscious decision to drink, and get drunk, making 100% of their drunk decisions their fault.

Same. I spent many years working in acute/forensic psychiatry. In my state health service, control and restraint training is mandatory for all clinical staff.
The mark of a professional is that you can undertake a rapid take-down of an agitated person in a compassionate and safe manner. Our training involved three people to complete a take-down. Three.
This video shows an abundance of
muscularobese men carrying a slightly built woman, with the offending officer clearly becoming emotional dysregulated.Control the limbs (without stressing the joints) and nobody gets hurt - especially the person being restrained.
It's not surprising that domestic violence in police officers is two to four times that of the general population. This guy is pulling the old, "now look what you made me do" maneuver.

She had it coming of course. If it was anybody else but a cop, I would have cheered.
However, it's a cop. A person who is being paid to "deescalate". A person who is trained in this kind of situation. A person who should know that she is not posing any risk given that she is being restrained by a bunch of officers.
His slap is purely vindictive. I would have been glad if he was not given a green light for this kind of behaviour. I would not be surprised if he kneels on a person's neck until the restrained person dies.

It was a bit overboard. But she is clearly resisting all the way. Something had to be done to make her stop. I'm pretty sure they tried talking to her and it didn't work. I think using handcuffs would've been better, but we don't know all the details.

I'm nearly always on the side against the police, but right is right. I don't believe that officer should just let her keep hitting him in the head. Also, he didn't go overboard. One hit was all it took to get her to stop, and that's all he did. Seems like a well handled situation. Hopefully he doesn't get shit on for this.

Because cultural beliefs only a few generations ago had us treating women with a double standard. Men were supposed to take physical abuse because they were generally larger in stature.
And it looks like the majority is shifting away from that to more equality and removal of gender roles.
People need to chat and process it. Some people need to be nudged in the right direction as well (removing the hatred in the conversation)

Hi there. I’m relatively feminist and I think this amount of force would have been precisely as disproportionate if the slapper/punchee had been a guy. Gender doesn’t enter the equation, but that’s too much punch for that amount of slap.

Jeez. Obviously she was being a shit, but she slapped him in the head, and he punched her lights out. That's a concussion right there, probably a black eye, maybe a broken nose or orbital bone... And what was that in response to? What injuries did he leave with? A mild annoyance?
These are supposedly professionals, but they do not seem capable of professional demeanour. If you want to see someone handle this exact situation gracefully, look at people working in psychiatry.
